Makes sense. Osgood is out for a couple of months, Howard has a minor injury, and they don't feel comfortable with Joey McDonald backing him up. Howard remains the starter, Nabokov is there as a vet backup with playoff experience in case Howard falters.

That was quick.

This would be huge. Takes some of the pressure off Howard, who is banged up and was struggling before that.

Doubt he clears though.

I don't think he'll make it through waivers personally. I could see teams snagging him just to keep Detroit from being competitive. It's what I would do if I was a rival GM.

I don't see how the wings sign him to an amount that will allow him to clear waivers.

I'm not sure. But a team looking to bolster their goal-tending depth for a cup run may seize the opportunity.

We'll have to see what the $ figure is.

Wings have next to no cap space. Odds are the contract would be for 2M or less. Many teams would be interested. Colorado immediately comes to mind as a team that would claim him.

Islanders or Oilers could claim him off of waivers and trade him before the deadline. Think they could get a 2nd rounder? :)

I'm not sure what the cap space situation is in Detroit, but I can't see them giving Nabokov the kind of money that would scare other teams away.

One thing is for sure. Nabokov is on his way back to the NHL.

Osgood is on LTIR, so my guess is the deal is probably for exactly what Osgood makes(1.417m) +- a few thousand.

If it gets done and he clears MacDonald will be sent down.

Could see a team like the Flames claiming him, then trading him for a 2nd that we need. I don't think he'll even get that far though, i'm betting the Devils or Oil pick him up.

that would be a classic move but I doubt Det would bother with any team that claimed Nabokov to spite the wings.

Since the Devils never think outside the box, The Islanders should claim Nabakov then send him to Detroit for a draft pick. Or anyone else who wants him.

It's like getting a free asset with little risk. If nobody wants Nabokov in a trade just waive him since he's a UFA at end of year or let him backup DP till he gets hurt again.

You can play him a game or two then deal him at the deadline.
