Will start practicing with the team tomorrow as per NHL Powerplay on NHL Network.

Is Peter Forsberg set to return to the NHL?

That question doesn't have an answer as of yet, but Forsberg will practice with the Colorado Avalanche beginning Saturday, the team announced in a statement.

"I need to see where I am physically and practicing with NHL players is the best way to find that out," Forsberg said.

Forsberg will begin skating with the team Saturday morning prior to Colorado's afternoon game against Boston. He last played in the NHL for the Avalanche during the 2007-08 season, putting up 14 points in nine regular-season games and 5 points in seven playoff games.

I call major BS. He just barely started practicing with MoDo again.

decadentia 01-21-2011 03:37 PM

This has to be BS, everytimes he's tried (even with Modo) he can never get his wonky foot to work. Its a damned shame too, the guy obviously longs to play again.

I think this is where I came in...

No, sorry.

No jokes here.:)

GKJ 01-21-2011 03:45 PM

Better them than us. Keep him away.

dbr2 01-21-2011 03:48 PM

Maybe we could have got him, and then traded him away again.

King Forsberg 01-21-2011 03:54 PM

If he wishes to play in the NHL again will he have to clear waivers?

Good, have fun with the Avs Foppa, we don't need you here.

Mgkibbles 01-21-2011 04:01 PM

Even with one foot Foppa is better than 95% of players in the world.

If that's the case why is he already not in the NHL? To my knowledge he's only ever had one bad foot. Loved Forsberg's game but we certainly don't need the distractions here.

Because he doesn't have confidence that his foot will hold up.

Actually, he has the same condition in his left foot as the right, but not as bad. If you recall, before the 2006-07 season, he was supposed to have surgery on both feet (first the right, then the left) and be out until Christmas. Instead, he opted to just have the right foot done and was in the lineup opening night.

The problem with the right foot has never been solved, despite several additional surgeries, endless varieties of skate inserts and customizations and physical therapy.

To answer someone else's question, he would not be subject to waivers to play in the NHL this season because he never played a game for or signed a contract with Modo this season.

I agree that the Flyers -- with as well as things are going -- hardly need this distraction right now. I also strongly suspect that he had contact with the Flyers before deciding to work out with the Avs.

Last but not least, I should add that I still think it's a longshot he plays for the Avs this season. He's less than a month removed from shutting himself down for the third time in less than a year because the foot doesn't hold up.

Exactly. That's the lone reason why he turned down the Flyers offer to sign with the team for the last 8 games of the regular season last year to aid the playoff push -- he didn't think the foot was going to hold up and he was very dissatisfied by his performance at the Olympics because he was so physically limited.

OriginJM 01-21-2011 04:49 PM

May I ask, what EXACTLY is wrong with his feet?

If I remember correctly he has ligaments that have been stretched out, and he also has an issue with some foot muscles that don't function properly.

I'm no doctor, but basically he has a condition where his foot/ankle has so can't stay firmly in a skate boot. He's had at least three surgeries, tried dozens of skate modifications and inserts and tried compensatory strengthening exercises, and nothing has worked for more than a few games.

In addition, his history of groin pulls and a sports hernia quite possibly are related to the foot issues.

GKJ 01-21-2011 04:56 PM

And his "inner circle" of people that he trusts hasn't always given him good advice.
