Leino's contract negotiations (Feb. 6 update, post #20)

There are positive signs in negotiations between the Flyers and winger Ville Leino.

Leino, who blossomed into one of the Flyers' key players in last year's Stanley Cup playoffs, can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

It doesn't sound as if it will get to that stage.

"I am optimistic we'll get a deal done," Bill Zito, Leino's agent, said in a text message on Tuesday.

Entering Tuesday's game with Montreal, Leino had 11 goals and was third on the team with 25 assists. He was tied for third in the NHL with a plus-22 rating.

The Flyers already have about $56 million committed to 2011-12 salaries. The salary-cap maximum - $59.4 million - is expected to rise next season, but there won't be enough room to sign all of the team's potential free agents.

A formula that factors expiring contracts into the mix leaves the Flyers with just under $4.1 million of "tagging" space, according to assistant general manager Barry Hanrahan.

The amount of tagging space must be greater than the amount of the salary-cap hit the Flyers will pay a player.

Because Leino is expected to sign a multiyear deal in the $2.3 million-per-season range, there is plenty of room for an agreement to be reached this season.

Leino, 27, is making $825,000 this season, with a salary-cap hit of $800,000.

Besides Leino, Brian Boucher, Sean O'Donnell, and Nik Zherdev can become unrestricted free agents after the season. Dan Carcillo, Andreas Nodl, and Darroll Powe are potential restricted free agents; the Flyers can match another team's offer and retain those players.

2.3 multi year is a steal.

agrudez* 01-26-2011 11:55 AM

Good news and good price.

I was always baffled by people claiming Leino would command 4M+ from us (he is still less than a year away from being a healthy scratch in Detroit, lest we forget). Even 2.3M would be a discount from my expectations, though. I always assumed something like 2.8M.

HoverCarle* 01-26-2011 11:57 AM

saw this this morning, sounds good.

And 2.3 is just the writer's speculation so don't bank on it even though it would be a great deal. 2.5 or 2.75 are more likely I think

Upon first reading I took that as a comment based on what Hanrahan had said.

dingbathero 01-26-2011 12:23 PM

i am hoping for 2.25 3 year deal.

CharlieGirl 01-26-2011 12:24 PM

Anything under $3 million is fantastic news.

it could be, but there is no quote or anything so it is likely speculation

So glad to see someone involved confirm something is close!!! It'll be a beauty to see this get done...especially if it is <3mil per...

phillyfanatic 01-26-2011 01:07 PM

Assuming 61.4 cap next season, it looks to me like we can keep the team in place. We have 56 spent giving us 5.4 remaining. If Leino signs at 2.7, Nodl, Powe and Boucher for a total of 2.5 and we are good to go. Carcillo and Zherdev will walk and we are under the cap with everyone else locked up. If you remove Walker to the minors, we have enough to re-sign Zherdev if we want.

S-W-E-E-T!!!!

I wonder how many times he's gotten that while playing pick up games...

Remember Panotch said Carter's cap hit was expected to be $6.3 million? $2.3 would be awesome for Leino but I won't believe it till the deal is done and Homer reports the number.

Leino signed for 2.3 and keeping the HBL line intact would be awesome. I wasn't his biggest fan when he came over, but somehow that line clicks. Part of the reason that it does, is because he takes a huge defensive responsibility, which is not something he was accused of doing previously. He's had a few slightly rough games lately, but overall that line has been magnificent.

So what you're saying is that it will be even lower than 2.3Mil! :sarcasm:

If I was Leino I'd find a new agent. Under 2.5 million is gross underpayment. Color me shocked if we get it done for less than 3 over at least 4 years, this should be Ville's big contract. Hopefully I'm wrong.

LEIFey 01-26-2011 08:15 PM

If Leino signs for 2.3, I'll do a jig. That is a ridiculous bargain.

esuhock22 01-26-2011 08:25 PM

Great news, get it done.

Timmay says the Flyers have put two offers on the table...

http://www.csnphilly.com/02/06/11/So...241&feedID=695

Quote:

Several sources tell CSNPhilly.com that the Flyers are offering a three and four-year contract worth between $9 million and $12 million, depending upon length.

At least one prominent executive in the Flyers organization believes the 27-year-old right wing won’t get a better deal in unrestricted free agency this July than what the Flyers are offering.

Bill Zito, the agent for Leino, said he remains optimistic that an agreement will be reached before free agency. Zito would not comment on the two proposals or why his client hasn’t accepted one yet.

Others believe Zito wants to wait out the season and see how Leino’s numbers stack up against other players in free agency, and what his overall impact was on the Flyers.

Gotta love that grammar of Timmy's...that 7 year deal between 9 and 12 million would be a steal.

KimiFerrari 02-06-2011 10:17 PM

So I guess we know where they got that low and incorrect $2.3mill estimate.

He took the lowest contract amount option ($9 mill), then divided by the highest contract year option (4 years), to give $2.25mill.

I wouldn't give Leino more than $3mill.

rban* 02-06-2011 10:38 PM

This doesnt sound good. Looks like Leino camp wants more'n 3 mil/yr.

Mgkibbles 02-06-2011 10:47 PM

3.5 million should be the max on Leino.

Brun0 02-06-2011 11:36 PM

I dont think Flyers can afford him with this cap.
