Will anyone ever wear the tainted number for the Rangers again?

(Sort of OT)
The dredded ... 6 *shudders*

Do you think someone will eventually touch this number? If so, in how many years? I know players are superstitious so I think it may be a while.

NYR Viper 01-26-2011 04:44 PM

I think it will eventually be a young player who grabs it.

RegalRangers 01-26-2011 04:44 PM

I'm sure it will happen eventually. Probably someone who's been traded to the Rangers mid season and doesn't realize the history of "6"

Musto 01-26-2011 04:47 PM

I think someone will come in very soon and make us forget all about Wade Redden (Gleason?:naughty:). Maybe McIlrath.

JeffMangum 01-26-2011 04:50 PM

Wade Redden when he's called up or the playoffs.

Ian 01-26-2011 04:52 PM

Sather wore 6 as a Ranger, not surprising the number has been pretty cursed since.

Granted Lidster was a solid role player, and all things considered Kaspar wasn't bad either.

Hockey Team 01-26-2011 04:56 PM

There's no stigma on the number.

People don't remember things like this a decade from now. 10 years from now redden was just another crappy free agent that didn't work out.

vipernsx 01-26-2011 06:20 PM

Maybe it was fate...

You beat me to it.

Kaspar was A Beast for us in the post lockout season. Best interviews and short segments ever!

Bun Cook wore #6.

And so did my old friend Bobby Jones, in his two NHL games with the Rangers in 1969.

Machinehead 01-26-2011 07:10 PM

Some might think it's cursed, but if we somehow ended up with Shea Weber, they'd all forget real quick.

but now that you mention it, I'm beginning to question the fate of 23...

SupersonicMonkey* 01-26-2011 07:42 PM

Pretty sure Fred Cook was the original #6 for the New York Rangers.

Bill Cook #5
Frank Boucher #7
Fred Cook #6

That's the number that I thought that the thread was going to be about. How the fans wanted it retired and the two bums flipped over it.

Who cares about number 6? No great modern player wore that number.

A young defenseman will claim it soon. I thought 27 was a bit snakebiten after Kovalev's 2nd tour, Malahkov, and Mara who I liked but things didn't go too well for him here. But here is McDonough playing his ass off making me forget about some of the bad performances from those digits. Speaking of, I am dying to chnge the nameplate on my 27 Kovalev jersey if anyone can help me there. I'm in Central Jersey fyi.

Actually here's something really freaky. Manny Malhotra wears 27 now but he didn't here cause we had Kovy at the time. What number did he wear? Here's the freaky part...number 6!! :amazed:

This is a bit too much.

However it is pretty funny looking back on some of the players who wore it.

surf 01-26-2011 10:18 PM

D-Tim Bothwell?? Think he wore 6

As soon as I saw this thread, thats what I was thinking.

Barbara Underhill 01-26-2011 10:41 PM

We all thought 21 would be cursed after Higgins too.

skymachine 01-27-2011 01:04 AM

They should retire it in infamy.

I thought of that after I wrote it.

At least 23 isn't a jinxed number.
