#Canucks defenceman, Alex Edler is expected to have back surgery and is out indefinitely: http://canucks.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=550819

Quote:

Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks President and General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that defenceman Alex Edler will have micro discectomy surgery on his back. Edler will be out of the line-up indefinitely.

“After consultation with our physicians it was decided that surgery was the best course of action,” said Mike Gillis. “The best long term decision for Alex and our hockey club was to have the surgery immediately.”

Let the gong show ensue. What did we do to the hockey gods to deserve this? I guess this pretty much guarantees that we go after yet another top 4 defenseman at the deadline.

..... so much for needing to make room for Salo.

Mr. Canucklehead 01-27-2011 11:20 AM

Oh...dear...God.

$&^$# you, hockey Gods...

DeveinedPgBc 01-27-2011 11:21 AM

:( horrible!

Alan Jackson 01-27-2011 11:22 AM

On a positive note, looks like they've just found a way to fit Salo in.

Horrible news, though. Hopefully he can be back before the playoffs, but I haven't seen any indication of timeline anywhere.

Well, that is not as bad as I had imagined.

Surgery + back = a lot worse.

I wonder how Edler got injured?

gobi 01-27-2011 11:27 AM

Wow, this was unexpected. I thought it was a minor injury. I guess Salo can come back then and L. Sweatt can stay up a little longer.

RobertKron 01-27-2011 11:27 AM

Ehrhoff is hearing cash register sounds in his head right now.

Reign Nateo 01-27-2011 11:28 AM

Very bad news. Edler has been borderline dominant this season. What a bummer...

Collision with Benn in the Stars game.

The speculation was when he clobbered Jamie Benn in the Dallas game he also injured himself.

Hopefully the 7 week timeframe is correct, but yikes. Better now than later as well. But #%^@#%^!

Jobal 01-27-2011 11:30 AM

Ah, was it the center ice hit he threw where both of them went down?

Amused To Death 01-27-2011 11:31 AM

Eds, no!!

****ing **** ****.

Well that's freaking the worst news EVER. At least we still have Ehrhoff, Hamhuis, and Ballard with Salo joining the party soon hopefully. Alberts and Rome should also be back shortly after the all-star break.

Gonna have to figure out some new stable pairings in the meantime.

Bgav 01-27-2011 11:34 AM

Also our pp is going to go down the *******

Momesso 01-27-2011 11:35 AM

Well, good for Salo now, and likely our cap problems are gone.

Edler can take his time rehabbing and getting back, we don't really need him until April.

I wonder though if this was a direct result of the Benn hit or if this was something that may have developed earlier and been aggravated in the Dallas game.

Time Frame
Surgeons generally recommend restricted activity for two weeks and a return to normal activities at six weeks; bending, lifting and twisting should be avoided as much as possible for the rest of your life, according to SpinalNeurosurgery.com.
