The Lightning have placed Mike Smith on waivers.

DG 02-02-2011 11:29 AM

He sucks, but I hope the Sens claim him. Then we can leave Lehner in the AHL so he can not be shelled night in and night out.

Was that not the last piece to the Brad Richards trade? Man Tampa got hosed on that one

Mike Farkas 02-02-2011 11:33 AM

I really thought he was going to be good, when Tampa first got him it looked promising...it's a shame the wheels fell off for him...

KimiFerrari 02-02-2011 11:33 AM

Another waiver wire hero for the Flyers?

I think he would have been ok if not for the concussions. Not world beater, but serviceable. As a Lightning fan, I'm happy, but it does kind of suck. Great team guy and a really nice guy towards the fans as well.

LeafsandSharksfan 02-02-2011 11:36 AM

Oh he's a goalie? When is someone gonna waive a 1st line power forward? Jeez.

SpezDispenser 02-02-2011 11:36 AM

Are you seeing this Murray? This can be done to Leclaire too (when he's off the IR, if ever).

Fel 96 02-02-2011 11:37 AM

Mike "Hextall Junior" Smith.

SLAPSHOT723 02-02-2011 11:38 AM

It's possible the Islanders might put in a claim because we actually do need a goalie. Thanks a lot Nababy.

Cheap goalie on waivers? Calling Garth Snow

LightningStrikes 02-02-2011 11:39 AM

Well, it's tough. He's a pretty fun and nice guy so I was always hoping for him to get back to his pre-concussion form. He was very solid in his last games before his knee injury but now with Roloson locked as our #1 and Ellis with another year left on his contract, he's the obvious odd man out.

Butchered 02-02-2011 11:39 AM

He may be able to turn it around somewhere else but I'm just not really sold on that. I don't think anyone touches him with a 40 ft pole.

He went 0-2 in Norfolk during his conditioning stint with a 2.56 GAA and a .900 SV%.

Stan Dupcomic 02-02-2011 11:40 AM

Is this guy better than the goalies in Toronto?? All I know is he was one of the centre pieces of the Brad Richard deal. Maybe we should claim him.

Vitto79 02-02-2011 11:40 AM

This has Isles all over it people and I bet Smith reports cause he will be playing for a contract. I could see Dipietro/Smith for one year.

When Nabokov got claimed I thought Smith would eventually be on the waiver wire.

Yeah, a little bad luck with Smith because of the injuries and some bad asset management giving up on Jussi Jokinen so quickly.

Yeah, I thought this too.

Came to say the exact same thing. As a Sens fan, I don't want Lehner rushed.

Smith isn't all that cheap, not Nabby cheap anyway, his contract is 2.2/year.

Always wanted Smith to do well, it's a shame about the concussions.

I Am Beat You 02-02-2011 11:51 AM

Good guy who got screwed over by injuries. He's a hard worker, and he can provide some toughness as well ;)

Barbadian91 02-02-2011 11:53 AM

wow amazing how much a difference a few years can make :shakehead

On that deal itself? Yes... but if you want to go down the line to where the players are now...well its not great but we did get Purcell and a pick out of Halpern. Purcell is coming into his own right now for sure.

See ya Mikey.

JawandaPuck 02-02-2011 11:58 AM

He'll go unclaimed now, but will likely get a back up goalie contract in the off-season.
