Should I plan the parade?

Jaromir Jagrbombs 02-04-2011 03:48 PM

Man you guys are lucky you won the Joel Martin sweepstakes.

SLAPSHOT723 02-04-2011 03:48 PM

Joel Martin... Come get the...

Ah why bother...

Yog S'loth 02-04-2011 03:52 PM

Joel Martin? The guy who was tending goal in the IHL... and by that, I mean "not the good one"?

Pheasant the peasant 02-04-2011 03:52 PM

The Joel Martin who has won only a single AHL game this season for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers? That Joel Martin?

periferal 02-04-2011 03:53 PM

Guess this means Nabokov wasn't kidding.

IslesNorway 02-04-2011 03:53 PM

Ridiculous! Simply ridiculous!

xECK29x 02-04-2011 03:55 PM

Really? An IHL scrub who is nowhere near good enough for the AHL is our answer?

SkullSplitter 02-04-2011 03:56 PM

I'm sorry about Johnson breaking DP's face.

caley 02-04-2011 03:56 PM

I don't want to pile on the Isles, because I feel bad for their fans, but....REALLY? Garth Snow couldn't find a better temporary back-up for Kevin Poulin than a guy who has drifted around the minor leagues for NINE YEARS?! I really hope this is just a temporary fix and that Snow is working the phones to bring someone in for the rest of the season. I mean, there have to be better options out there, off the top of my head:

-Jeff Deslauriers. Lost the back-up role to Devan Dubnyk and is having trouble getting starts in the AHL because of the stellar play of Martin Gerber. Played really well in the Spengler Cup and is still quite young and an impending UFA. No risk here whatsoever for the Isles.
-Curtis Sanford. Playing well for the Canadiens' farm team. On an NHL minimum deal that expires this July.
-Barry Brust. Playing well for the Senators' AHL affiliate and doesn't have an NHL deal so could be signed ASAP.
-Johan Backlund or Mike Leighton. Neither one of them seem to be in the Flyers' plans this season. Leighton might be too expensive for the Isles and Philly might not be willing to give up Backlund, however.
-Matt Climie or Al Montoya: Climie has been a top-notch goalie for in the AHL, is serving as the Coyotes #3 goalie. Montoya looks like he'll never pan out as an NHL regular, but why not give him a chance?
-Mike Smith: On an expiring deal that will leave him an UFA and is now with Tampa's minor team.
-Tyler Weiman: has been one of the best goalies in the AHL over the last few years. With Luongo and Schneider cruising, has virtually no shot at an NHL gig

Who?

Fairenough 02-04-2011 04:09 PM

Loaned To Bridgeport

Not signed to be the Isles' backup...At least, it doesn't seem like it.

clefty 02-04-2011 04:12 PM

A 28 year old with nine career AHL games.

Well, guess it gives hope that anyone can get an NHL deal.

I'll pile on the Islanders. Garth Snow and Charles Wang are two giant pieces of ****.

TheSandman 02-04-2011 04:32 PM

The Sharks have this Thomas Griess guy kicking around in Europe, why not make a move for him? Or would he have to go through waivers or something?

SkullSplitter 02-04-2011 04:39 PM

To Pittsburgh: 5th round pick
To New York Islanders: Mattias Modig + Casey Pierro-Zabotel

A) he would have to go through waivers, B) griess found his way to Europe because of how our goaltending situation played out and imo he is not available in any case.

MXD 02-04-2011 04:50 PM

If I was Oilers GM, I would have offered them Gerber...

I'm sure CPZ's wife would really get along with Snow and Wang. She could twitter about them, and they can revoke her access to her husband. :sarcasm:

-Jeff Deslauriers
-Curtis Sanford
-Johan Backlund
- Mike Leighton
-Matt Climie
-Al Montoya
-Mike Smith
-Tyler Weiman
theyre all under contract and i doubt garth wants to give up any assets in a vailed attempt at saving a lost season.
-Barry Brust: while hes not under contract with an NHL team, i think if you substituted his name with martins in the thread title, all the internet comidiens would be posting the same responses......"who?"

again, i dont see garth giving up anything.

Yeah that's it. No need to panic or bash Snow. I think that they just signed Martin in case they have more injuries and they need to call up someone, but he will most likely finish the season in Bridgeport.

I mean the situation isn't really different than what it was a few weeks ago.
NHL : Poulin, Lawson AHL : Koskinen, Martin

If Poulin/Lawson get injured, they would rather have Martin warming the bench than Koskinen.

Anyway if I was Gath Snow I would go and get Smith. I mean they could probably get also a pick or maybe a low-end prospect along with Smith.

Maybe something like Smith + Mihalik for a random player (ie Joel Martin) could work

ZombPred 02-04-2011 06:23 PM

Can he take a punch?
