Also, Rich has an article about scouting a "Western Hockey League game between Calgary and Vancouver". That would be the "Calgary Hitmen" versus the "Vancouver Giants". Any guesses as to which eight players were being scouted?

We the fans really deserve a winner huh Deano?

Get us that damn LW we so desperately need to become a true threat.

Obviously Vancouver defenceman David Musil 6' 3.5'' 200lbs. Should go 1st round of the draft

Not sure of the others, maybe Kosterman from the Calgary Hitmen. He's about 6'4 190lbs. 4th round-ish.

Vancouver forward Marek Tvrdon. One of Slovakia's better players U18. Think he's out with a shoulder injury though.

Easier to narrow down based on age. First time draft eligibles for this year were born between 9-16-92 and 9-15-93.

Guys who fit that:

Calgary: F Trevor Cheek, D Alex Roach, D Kyle Schmidt, F Brendan Santini

Vancouver: D David Musil, F Nathan Burns, F Teal Burns, D Luke Fenske, D Zach Hodder, D Tyler Hart, F Cain Franson, G Brendan Jensen

Out of the re-entries, I think Andrej Stastny is the only guy who looks like a potential pick in June (edit: Tvrdon appears to be injured but could be drafted). Recently turned 20, put up good number in the Czech Republic but was passed over the last two drafts. Came over to the WHL this season and apparently has been quite impressive lately, but he is a bit older than his competition.

Would guess that Musil and Stastny would be 1-2 out of the draft eligibles in that game.

It's fun to play pseudo-scout, but it's tough without having a preconceived notion of what you're watching. I went to a Seattle-Portland game early in the 2009-10 season. Ryan Johansen and Nino Niederreiter combined for three goals, but I didn't come away thinking "those guys could be top 10 picks" as much as "Man, Seattle sure does stink."

Yeah, what is taking him so long?

Hard to believe that Martin Jones was not drafted in 2008. You can tell that even the Kings' brass is surprised by the pace of his development.

Some scout in the organization deserves a lot of credit for Jones.

LoL, listening to the interview, I was under the impression that Lombardi was doing his best to hold back an orgasm while discussing Jones. :naughty:

But seriously, do you guys think Lombardi's regard for Jones will make Bernier expendable in the near future? He (Bernier) might be the asset we need to acquire either that 1st line winger or 2nd line center.

Not hard to believe at all - he had played 2 seasons of junior hockey of which he was the backup goalie for his team in Calgary. In the scouting rankings that came out for the 2008 draft, he was the 21st ranked North American goalie and the 7th ranked goalie in the WHL (the others were Chet Pickard, Braden Holtby, Jacob DeSerres, Dustin Tokarski, Steven Stanford, and Morgan Clark). In the entire draft, there were only 22 goaltenders (NA and European) chosen so based on his ranking it was perfectly understandable that he wasn't drafted. However, where DL earned his money was in enticing Jones to come to LA's rookie camp on a tryout basis: he was invited to 3 other camps and was waiting for an offer to go to the Canucks camp (his dad is a bigwig-VP in Vancouver's arena) when he agreed to the tryout with the Kings.

Neither was I surprised when he left with a contract - he plays a good technical game and when you have size and are good at the angles, you can go a long way in this game. What was really overlooked the last 2 seasons was the chicken/egg argument: was Jones the reason why Calgary (WHL) was so good or was the reason Jones was so good because of Calgary? Obviously with Jones' junior team in the basement this season, that question can be answered for people who didn't see him play first-hand.

I think your question can only be answered in the affirmative if Jones plays lights out in the AHL playoffs this season and gets off to a strong start again next season with the Monarchs.

Consistency is everything with goaltenders. Also, Bernier would have to be packaged with something else of significant value to get the Kings a 1st line LW or 2nd line center.

Bernier, Hickey, Moller, and our 1st in 2011 for Parise?

This situation mirrors San Jose's in the early 2000's remarkably well. And like the San Jose situation I think two of Bernier, Jones, and Quick will be traded. I want to stress I don't think this will happen any time soon but no team can afford to keep three starting goaltenders on their team.

I just hope the return is as good as what San Jose got. Kiprusoff netted a second rounder while Toskala was traded with Mark Bell in exchange for a first, second, and fourth round draft pick.

Devils need a defenseman to build around. They'd ask for Johnson or Doughty.

KingPurpleDinosaur 02-08-2011 03:12 PM

goalies are cheap now, I don't think we can trade him for much. So many amazing goaltenders were let onto the free market for a reason. The prime value is in defensemen right now.

And that would be the end of that conversation. No way Doughty is going anywhere, and no way Johnson and Bernier would be packaged in the same deal.
