Major Versus NHL Broadcast Changes

The overhaul that Versus just went through this past weekend is significant. NBC now owns Versus/Comcast, and they didn't waste any time modifying the broadcasts to suit the tastes of the new guy in charge of NBC Sports - Sam Flood. Sam is who is in charge of Winter Classic broadcasts every year, and who invented "Inside the Glass".

Changes of note:

Starting tonight, the #1 announcing team will be Doc Emrick, Eddie Olczyk and Pierre McGuire inside the glass. Versus has never had an "Inside the Glass" presence during games - now they will have it for all of their games.

Brian Engblom will move from in-studio analyst to inside the glass analyst.

Joe Beninati has been fired (the Caps PBP guy with the love it/hate it voice that called his share of Kings games).

Bob Harwood, Lindsey Soto and all of the "non-player" sideline reports have been fired.

Mike Milbury is replacing Brian Engblom in-studio.

Needless to say, this is a pretty big change happening within the span of 2 days. If you like NBC's coverage of the NHL, then you'll like these changes. If you don't... you probably won't.

Sybil227 02-07-2011 04:15 PM

They dumped Charissa Thompson? Is there any reason to watch Versus now? :sarcasm:

ShattStar03 02-07-2011 04:18 PM

I liked Joe Beninati, I wonder why they fired him.

DeeMeck 02-07-2011 04:18 PM

West Coast teams will be next to get the axe.

Blah either way

Buddy The Elf 02-07-2011 04:22 PM

Let's see:

Pierre McGuire is annoying so that is a downer.
So is Brian Englom and Mike Milbury > Brian Engblom so I like that change.

Joe Beninati sucks.. good riddance.

Bob Harwood, Lindsey Soto and all of the "non-player" sideline reports have been fired. My take.. who cares?

I like the changes but I guess we'll have to see first.

Does anyone know if Versus plans on adding more games since they could conceivably simulcast games on regional networks that Comcast owns? I noticed they showed a sharks game recently with the Sharks' announcers. I'm all in favor of listening to the regional announcers over a Doc Emrick national guy.

Buddy The Elf 02-07-2011 04:23 PM

Also, doesn't the Versus contract end this summer?

Shellz 02-07-2011 04:23 PM

Brian Engblom = thumbs down
But, whatever. As long as I can still watch Hockey, I couldn't careless.

Me too

The Sharks and Dallas PBP teams are both very good, much better than Emerick

Yeah I wonder why they would even bother with a national PBP unless there ISN'T a local crew available (meaning they don't own a regional network in the market they are televising the game for). If Comcast owns the regional network, just use the local guys. Seems more cost effective and nobody is watching a game to hear Doc Emrick call it. Even if the local guys suck, I love hearing them banter.

I'd take Ralph Strangis and Darryl Reaugh over anyone in the league, besides Bob and Jim. Randy Hahn and Drew Remenda are also awesome.

The Tikkanen 02-07-2011 04:37 PM

Soto was hot and she knew how to dress to flaunt her "talents". Milbury has more wild opinions than Engblom and damn that hair is freaky. It looks like he stole it off of a Michael Myers mask. I really don't care about the announcers. Maybe now they'll drop some of the hunting shows which I find deeply disturbing.

Funny, I can't stand the Dallas guys, especially Daryl Reaugh. Waaaay to homerish for me. I'd rather listen to a Doc Emerick or Jim Hughson any day, at least they aren't biased towards one team (except Hughson still is when Vancouver is playing).

TonySCV 02-07-2011 04:38 PM

Rick Peckham and Daryl Reaugh are scheduled to do Tuesday's Versus game in Tampa. No word on their fates as of yet, but it'd be criminal if they fired Reaugh. He is terrific. Rick is a fine PBP man as well.

If I were Luc Robitaille or FSN I'd be on the phone to Bob Harwood right now offering him a job. Bob Harwood >>> Patrick O'Neal (or Heidi Androl for that matter).

Some Canadians must be thrilled that we've taken Pierre McGuire off of their hands from TSN broadcasts. Oy. That's a lot of Pierre.

Youngblood93 02-07-2011 04:42 PM

Any chance NBC buys part of the Kings and fires Jim Fox............

Sucks about Joey B, I thought he was great

Have you heard the Dallas guys call a non-Dallas game. They have done or two for VS. They are really good.

He has been with the team for 20 years. If he hasn't been fired alrady, I doubt this is going to change anything.

My advice to the Jim Fox haters, learn to enjoy him for what he is, a hockey/Kings fan. He is like the guy sitting next to you at the game. Yeah he might be annoying sometimes but we're both Kings and hockey fans so we're all on the same team.

Androl did some coverage of the Winter Classic, don't know if that factors in or not.

Reaugh did color for the Versus LA playoff games last season which folks in the LA area couldn't see due to FSN blackouts but they re-aired the Versus broadcasts on the NHL network later that summer. Reaugh did an outstanding job. I'd swap Reaugh for Fox in a heartbeat. (Although I don't mind Fox, Reaugh > Fox.)

No I actually haven't. We dont get VS up here so the only time I hear them is when I watch a Dallas game on Fox on my center ice package. So I guess if they weren't doing a Dallas game I'm sure they'd be great. But when they are, I can barely stand listening to Reaugh.

Hopefully the NHL goes back to ESPN. Thorne and Clement were very solid

Outside of Thorne,(and the late great Tom Mees) I don't miss anything about the ESPN broadcasts.
They didn't talk about hockey half of the time and it was a giant commercial for ESPN.
Sure outside of hockey, Vs has the same "quality" programming that ESPN2 did when it first started out but at least Vs' heart is in to it.

Bill Pido did 100x better job with NHL 2night than Buccigross did and remember, NHL 2night was barely if ever on anymore in the final years the NHL was on ESPN.

Vs needs to peach Gary Thorne and make him their lead announcer over Emerick.

Agreed.

Good points but it took VS 5 years to finally get a nightly wrap up show.
