Thoughts on Lupul?

Thought that this would be the best place to seek information on lupul, to my surprise and dismay there isn't much talk on this board about your rivals picking up a former flyer. With that being said, what's your take on his abilities? And how did he perform in Philly? Thanks y'all.

Stockholm Syndrome 02-10-2011 02:57 AM

He's good for 20-30 goals and 20-30 assists. Good guy.

Giroux tha Damaja 02-10-2011 03:00 AM

He's a good second line winger who will produce when surrounded by other good players and is willing to dig pucks out of corners. He's a bit expensive for a player who isn't very useful when he isn't scoring. I haven't seen how he played in Anaheim, but he always had the size to be a decent defender, if not the skating ability.

I'll just copy what I posted in the NHL discussion thread:

That being said, he's really down on his luck. He's only managed to play 49 games over the last two seasons due to injury, and produced only 27 points in those.

I also think he needs a decent team around him to work. He is said to have crumbled in Edmonton under the pressure, but I think Edmonton was just a ****** team. They placed last in their division the year he was with them and fifth from the bottom in the league. And he played rather decently with us which is a big time market and the fans can be very tough on the players. However, Toronto also being a ****** team doesn't exactly help him here.

SolidSnakeUS 02-10-2011 03:15 AM

His salary sucks, but he's a great guy. Likes to be vocal and have fun. The thing is, I think, even though he will get more use in Toronto, I don't think he will do too well at all...

JagerPuck 02-10-2011 05:55 AM

Good dude, I guess now I have to get a Laffs jersey cause I've got EDM, ANA, and PHI Joff jerseys.

Wasn't aware Toronto was a rival. Interesting.

I had to check the date. Just to verify, the year is 2011, not 2004.

DrinkFightFlyers 02-10-2011 06:56 AM

Lots of potential but from what I remember kind of a lazy player. I liked him and if he has the right line mates I think he is good for 30 in a good year and 20 for sure on an off year.

HoverCarle* 02-10-2011 07:17 AM

Yeah same opinion as everyone here. I wouldn't expect too much this year as he is still recovering from his injury. Next year hopefully he can return to form after a full off season of training.

He has a great shot, but everything else about his game is just alright.

LEIFey 02-10-2011 07:26 AM

I think this is a great opportunity for Joffrey. He had a great start with Anaheim and then couldn't handle it in Edmonton. He did much better as a secondary support scorer for the Flyers but then he had bad injury issues. With the Leafs, he's going to get another shot at being a primary scoring forward and hopefully he'll be fully recovered and ready to go. I'm hopeful that he can do well in Toronto.

might2mash 02-10-2011 07:27 AM

I saw Lupul on the Amtrak once coming back from Boston. Did a double-take. Think he most likely got on somewhere in NJ, maybe hanging out with Carter. ;)

He's a decent winger. Was a fixture on our great RUmbL line that lasted like 4 games, but if he's put with other hardworking guys he knows how to score.

The Flyers are everyone's rival in the East.
Just not always the other way around.

jd2210 02-10-2011 07:51 AM

He's a nice guy who gives good interviews, and is great with fans. Lazy, streaky, and needs good linemates to produce. Good hands. Overvalued here because of an overtime goal, but still wish him the best. Overpaid by about a million. He should be a good addition to a team that needs some scoring though.

BringBackStevens 02-10-2011 08:04 AM

He's a mediocre 2nd line scorer with potential to be a good 2nd line scorer if he stays healthy

AaronTrieu 02-10-2011 08:37 AM

nice guy but hes a floater. His tweets are funny sometimes though. hahaha

captainpaxil 02-10-2011 09:18 AM

when lupul is relaxed and having fun hes scoring goals. hes the kind of player whos frustration shows up in his shots. he was doing just that for us untill he got hatchered. pressure from rehab and the playoff hunt as well as having to play up to his shiny new contract had him gripping the stick unmercifully after that. on the ice play him with kessell and keep him away from phaenuf and hell put up 60 pts for toronto.

OriginJM 02-10-2011 09:21 AM

HE'S A ****ING ANNOYING ******* AND I HATE HIM.

Just kidding, cool dude. I'd take him back.

flountown 02-10-2011 09:29 AM

I like Lupul, I think he is the perfect winger for Mike Richards. It was always my opinion that if he played with any play making center, not puck hog Carter, he has 35 goal potential.

He caught a really bad break with his blood disease, but aside from that, he was never injury prone until Hatcher broke his back...

And he gave us one of the most exciting moments in recent playoff history (up until last year's run):
http://thehockeywriters.com/wp-conte...03/lupul31.jpg

He also once scored 4 goals in a playoff game for Anaheim, including an overtime winner for a game they won 4-3.

FreshPerspective 02-10-2011 10:49 AM

Lupul became annoying to me once Holmgren overpaid him ...too inconsistent and def a floater like a turd much to my consternation. He would have his streaks and when healthy is def a 20-25 goal guy you can count on but just not worth 4M....that's his main problem not that he isn't NHL material or anything. Having said this he doesn't show the commitment IMO to have a long career in the NHL especially if his injuries persist...

decadentia 02-10-2011 11:19 AM

Yeah I was fine with Lupul when he made adequate money (aka what Leino is about to make), but at 4.2 he will kind of piss you off.

RJ8812* 02-10-2011 11:21 AM

I like Lupul. 60 point 2nd line winger if healthy

Shouldn't be making more than $3.5m though

zarley zelepukin 02-10-2011 11:58 AM

I pretty much agree with everyone else in the thread. The one thing I'll add is that occasionally he can dangle through some defenders and create a scoring chance for himself. Don't expect it to be a regular occurence though. His best asset is probably his shot.

Sadly your right (lack of playoffs = lack of rivals) I shouldve said something along the lines of him coming back to the eastern conference.

Thanks for the input guys

GoneFullHextall 02-10-2011 12:39 PM

streaky scorer. very capable of going off for 10 goals in 6 games then would get 1 in the next dozen games. good lockerroom guy and classy player.

LePalle 02-10-2011 12:51 PM

Definitely a streaky scorer. With us he was better playing with Richie, but I could definitely see him having success in a more crucial role with Toronto. He's got some skill, good overall abilities, but he could never really put it together for a long period of time. If he stays healthy he should be good for 50 points/season with decent but not exceptional two-way play.

agrudez* 02-11-2011 08:56 AM

Good for 25 goals, 25 assists and 25 shots which he forces down the throat of a recovering alcoholic porn star so that he can have his way with her.
