Paul Byron

How is he doing? last 4pg 0 points. I told you guys it takes more then 2 games to assess a player.

Chainshot 02-11-2011 05:49 AM

It also takes more than looking at a couple of box scores to assess a player.

Considering how effective he's been on the forecheck and throwing himself around winning puck battles, his game has been just fine.

Mergus merganser 02-11-2011 06:02 AM

In tampa he created that 4th goal (I believe that was the one, maybe the 5th?) because of an awesome forecheck. He has created a bunch of chances and is a very good prospect.

Byron has been very effective the last few games, I think he's been one of their better forwards. He's definitely earned his spot for now. I'm beginning to wonder if you even watch the game, posts like this strongly suggest that you do not.

He actually hasn't looked out of place at all. He's been buzzing around, forcing defensemen into mistakes on the forecheck, and creating some offense. The points haven't come, but in this case just looking at the statistics isn't adequate. He might have an NHL future and, at the very least, he gives us very good center depth at the AHL level.

Tim Murray 02-11-2011 09:14 AM

I was more worried about his forecheck and getting knocked off the puck.

So far he's impressed me on both fronts. Points will come.

Jame 02-11-2011 09:52 AM

very impressed so far. and LOVE that line...Gerbe and Byron, with Cody as protector of little kids. The Toronto game where Cody made sure every shift to let the opponents know not to mess with the little guys... which in turn, allows them to play chippy games

And both Gerbe and Byron, for what it's worth, have indeed been playing chippier. Both of them can hit for power, which is nice.

Yeah, you sure told us.

What did you tell us again?

But six games is quite enough?

Being as though I didn't have super-high expectations for him to start with, I can say I haven't been disappointed in his play. He seems to play bigger than his size, He forechecks well, has great energy, and seems to have a pretty good head for the game.

I would say that is about all we can ask from a kid that only has six games under his belt.

So how many games do you win when your players get no points?

OpethianSabre20 02-11-2011 10:43 AM

More than anything else, I've been impressed at how smart Byron plays...pretty damn advanced for an NHL rookie IMO. I wouldn't mind him continuing this play and becoming the team's 3rd line center who can fill in on the top 6 in a pinch down the road

Apparently 7 of their last 10.

In this particular instance, three out of four.

The kid has played pretty well in the role Ruff has him in. I doubt you actually watched the games however.

Five of six, considering they're 5-1-0 with him in the lineup. More easy questions, please.

Zman5778 02-11-2011 10:55 AM

The last 3 responses in a row have made me LOL.

7 of 10
3 of 4
5 of 6

But yeah --- Byron has impressed me. I didn't think he had it in him to be an NHL regular. He's starting to prove me wrong.

Considering he's played in 6 games, and not been on the scoresheet for 4... it would be the last four. Not sure where the other two are pulling their figures.

My bad, I didn't think reason was required in this thread.

I take that question to mean you have missed his last "4pg," and you're lucky- his offense has clearly stagnated on the one goal plateau, what a nothing.

----
Any offense at this point would be gravy, Paul's been playing so well in his role. He is bringing a spark to the lineup and is playing a smart, conservative game defensively. He's been backchecking like a fiend and his hits-per-game rate is higher than Kaleta's. A six game sample is tiny, but it still provides more useful information than we had before he started playing up in Buffalo.

Not very often, but the Wild did beat the Kings recently in a 1-0 shootout. If you're just as successful at preventing goals against it does happen.

TimHorton7 02-11-2011 11:21 AM

Watch him develop

Watched him play several games with Gatineau-QMJHL and he develops over time. There it took a 1/4 of a season then he really developed into a top tier player. I am not suggesting that after 15-20 games he will have Stamkos numbers, but to be critical of a young player that has come in and been more than responsible in his own end and chipped in a point or 2 in an equally small number of games is folly.

One of the first moves the new management needs to make is extending Cody...he brings a badly needed element to this team that can't be allowed to walk. He's what Gaustad was supposed to be.

flyingpig 02-11-2011 11:42 AM

Might want to wait for the kid to flame before saying he has.... stop with this silly agenda.

No one has any idea how he will turn out. Frankly, Im impressed that he has six games in as a pro already. He certainly isn't out of place, and that is all we can ask right now.

Players? He's one guy, who wasn't brought up for his scoring touch. If he was he'd be in the Top 6. He's doing just fine for what the team needs him to do.
