Restricted Free Agents
Can someone please explain Restricted Free Agents. I know that a team has the option to give the RFA a qualifying offer, but how can a RFA sign with another team. Also if a RFA signs with another team, doesn't the original team get compensation such as draft picks.
I assume DW will give RFA offers to Exelby, Heatley, Kaberle, Kovalchuk, Savard and Stefan, but what will happen to the others like Tremeblay and Larson.
Here is the short version.
When a player is an RFA, in order for the team to retain his rights(prevent him from becoming a UFA) he needs to be given an offer that's at least 10% higher than his last year's salary. After that he basically a normal free agent, except for the fact that if he belongs to team A and team B offers him a contract of 3 million/year and he accepts, team A has the option to match it and sign him for that amount. if they choose to let him go, they will get compensation picks from team B.
