Panthers' cap space

Quote:

The Panthers now just have a handful of players signed next year, with forwards David Booth, Stephen Weiss, Rostislav Olesz and, yes, Steven Reinprecht making over $12 million of the $18 million the Panthers have on the books.

Right now, the Panthers are more than $40 million under next year's cap.

Wow. Still have Vokoun coming off the books as well as a few others.

adam graves 02-28-2011 02:12 PM

more importantly, i think we have 27 million under the FLOOR...

gizmo12688 02-28-2011 02:14 PM

I really can't wait to see what they're going to do about that.

panthersfan751 02-28-2011 02:22 PM

We no longer have any excuse for not signing Brad Richards.

zeroG 02-28-2011 02:28 PM

please. what kind of sense would it make to overpay for brad richards and stick him on this team. that's just silly.

What else are we supposed to do? We have a huge gap just to get to the cap floor and even if we get there, we can't just sit around at the floor for 3 years while our young players mature.

The last thing this team can afford to do is alienate what fans are left by being cheap.

CaptainScrewy 02-28-2011 02:36 PM

Anyone have a list of available free agents we might target? Who makes sense on a rebuilding team for us to possibly overpay for? Hopefully some decent young FA's out there for us...

More importantly, it would be completely out of character. :sarcasm:

Aside from him not wanting to be a Florida Panther, which is probably fairly likely.

No, but there are plenty of reasons. Looks like he's going to re-sign in Dallas for one, and that he likely doesn't want to come here is two.

Time to offer sheet Parise :sarcasm:

Holy Jokinen 02-28-2011 02:41 PM

Trades happen on draft day and in the offseason. FA isn't the ONLY way to gain salary.

Montsy14 02-28-2011 02:49 PM

Wow, that free agent list looks awful...looks like this rebuild will rely solely on the farm...it's not going to be quick, that's for sure.

If we can get a Couturier/RNH/Lands, Im all for offering Parise a offer sheet.

CaptainScrewy 02-28-2011 03:06 PM

Any teams over the cap next year that will be forced to shed salary? Maybe that's how we can get more talent...

You guys do realize that we would have to forfeit 4 1st round picks for Parise. The Devils have the cap space to re-sign/match OS under $6.5M.

The only way to get him by OS is by offering around $9M(4 1sts). I don't know if I'd want to do that.

Laus723 02-28-2011 03:12 PM

Next year's team will probably be rough, as well, but I think it'll be a hard working team with players Tallon likes on his teams. There's a handful of guys who looking interesting out there, guess we'll see.

MR, any of our prospects looking to realistically make the leap?

No, we don't. I think most GM's are learning from the Penner and Kessel deals. Didn't make either team better, and set them back. Not worth it.

I agree we shouldn't do it. However, Let's not kid ourselves, a healthy Parise is not comparable to Penner/Kessel.

Dale Tallon: #FlaPanthers “have lots of money to spend .-.-. We're going to be very aggressive on the free agent market. It's going to be hot-and-heavy come July.''

Really? I think what you just said was rather silly. We have a ton of money to spend, and Brad Richards is the point-per-game player that this team hasn't had in forever.

This team has so much money to spend that they can sign Brad Richards (overpaying some), and they'd still have money to fix other areas of the team.

Tallon mentioned he expected a couple of the Panthers top prospects to join the team next year. Gudbranson is obviously one of them, I wonder if he means Howden as the other top prospect.

We trimmed a lot of the fat today and it all can be replaced. Richards is a top 10 center. We need a guy like him desperately and we'll have plenty of cap space and money to overpay. We also have entry level contracts coming up through the system so we should be ok with cap space as long as Tallon doesn't sign Khabi 2.0 and Campbell 2.0 this free agency.

He mentioned Petrovic by name along with Guds. Then again, he mentioned pretty much every D prospect we have.. so whatever...
