Levitate,

Trading for a BR is nothing like what NS did.

I do agree with your post in general, but my point was that going after players with the mindset of getting them no matter what it takes is what hurts teams like the Neil Smith era did. Richards is a need for the Rangers, but you can't just go after him with the mindset of "no matter what the cost"

I'd be interested to know what would have been an acceptable deal for you, Jonathan. Just curious

Fitzy 02-28-2011 03:15 PM

We didn't give up any core assets and we got a little bit better.

Looking around, the Sabres got a little better with the addition of Boyes. Time to beat them and get on track here.

BlueshirtBlitz 02-28-2011 03:16 PM

Richard falls into "still put up 90 points at 30 years old."

Richard is an elite player. Not Chris Drury.

broadwayblue 02-28-2011 03:16 PM

If the asking price was AA, MDZ and a 1st I don't see how anyone here can be the slightest bit upset we didn't agree to that. It's a ridiculous offer.

Hopefully after some practice with McCabe on the PP, that will start paying dividends

At the end of the day, this team still cannot score consistently enough to compete. Once again, we will be looking to next season...

KreiMeARiver* 02-28-2011 03:18 PM

If the offer was AA + MDZ + 1 or 2 firsts... we obviously did the right thing.

Hate to break it to you but this team wasn't winning this year WITH Brad Richards...so were were looking to next season regardless. Only now we'll have all our assets and very possibly Brad Richards as well. A win win in my book.

Again, what would you have done differently?

KingWantsCup 02-28-2011 03:21 PM

So now there's apparent knowledge that Richards has a desire to play for us, which is wonderful. Now, if all goes well, we only get him for cash. Patience will pay off.

Absolutely true. This isn't a cup team yet (even with Richards), so why would we give up anything of value for him. I'd rather miss the playoffs than do a deal that for a key piece.

Not to mention that Gaborik has a concussion in addition to Richards, and we have no idea when either of them would be back. We also have one of the youngest defenses in the league. I must say I am a bit confused as to why some people thought the Rangers had to go for it now when they aren't really prepared win the Cup this year.

On the other hand, we have the 2nd lowest goals against average in the Eastern conference, as a team, and also the 4th best goals for/against ratio.

KingWantsCup 02-28-2011 03:22 PM

Also the Stars GM will look like an idiot July 1st. Definitely should have traded him for something, anything reasonable. I'm happy we didn't bite on their crazy demand though.

ThisYearsModel 02-28-2011 03:24 PM

Look at the bright side......we have Captain Clutch coming back soon. He will add goals...........errr.........he will add some assists.........errrrr.......he'll score big goals.........errrrrr......he'll eat up minutes........errr......never mind.

King of cool 02-28-2011 03:26 PM

See ya in july Brad!

Callahan Auto 02-28-2011 03:26 PM

No steps back for a team on the rise. We haven't been great lately but I'm glad we didn't sell of any pieces that we'll need in the future. Deadline deals are exciting but they can backfire. Overall, I'm quite fine with how today turned out.

broadwayblue - Excellent point. He is free to go wherever he wants on July 1. Here are two factors as well. We can see how he looks after the concussion for another team. Also, what if Gaborik's post consussion effects render him unreliable next season. It gives us some time to adjust.

just so you guys know, I would prefer Sather's insulting offer of gilroy+ as opposed to nothing in the offseason. Too many contigencies surrounding the Richards signing here and its pretty obvious NY has a bigger check book come summer. Our only hope here in Dallas is that everything falls into place.

But Gilroy+ for a number 1 center? What is the Rangers organization smoking.

qwertyaas 02-28-2011 03:28 PM

Saying they wanted Anisimov, 1st, top prospect and possibly a roster player.

IrishJimbo 02-28-2011 03:28 PM

You'd have to think that if we can suck it up and buyout Drury from his last year it will give us the room to land Richards.

Looking forward to a first round exit....with an outside chance of making it to the second round

not if they make a good run in the playoffs. or even get to the playoffs. playoff games generate a lot of revenue and they can certainly use more money.

I don't think we've heard that officially reported, where did you get it from?

Some people were throwing around offers that centered around Gilroy

Not to mention is they clear up internal issues and are able to resign Richards.
