The Official Bring Home Scottie Upshall and Vernon Fiddler Thread

Of course it depends if they become UFAs, but they both meet some immediate and long term needs of the team. They are both good veteran players who can help this team transition into a contender. I know Upshall is not overly big, however he has a ton of jam he is fast and has a laser for a shot. Fiddler well he is a defensive center which team has lacked in many years, he can move up and down the line up, plays hard and will make Fraser expendable:handclap:. Discuss, flame, disagree, agree whatever!

MisterD 03-02-2011 12:07 PM

Fiddler is a perfect fit for what we need going forward. Upshall would be nice too.

Reimer 03-02-2011 12:14 PM

These two would be awesome. I would be all for it. I just hope our GM can finally bring in some useful players via FA at some point.

misfit 03-02-2011 12:14 PM

I'm in! The exact two players I think we should be going after next year. Even if they're the only players we get, I'd be happy with those additions.

Of course, my official "Go Get Zbynek Michalek" thread(s) last year didn't bare much fruit. I hope you have better luck than I did.

Hall - Horcoff - Hemsky
Paajarvi - Gagner - Omark
Upshall - Cogliano/Brule - Eberle
Reddox - Fiddler - Jones

Whitney - Gilbert
Smid - Larsson
Peckham - Foster/Petry

Still not the greatest, but better than the current alternative.

This is an idea I can get behind.

Upshall, Jones, Reddox, and Fiddler is a good start on the bottom 6. Not the biggest, but good energy, hustle, and some added versatility IMO.

Juice 03-02-2011 12:25 PM

Wow 5 for 5! Great start. However like Reimer said, it doesn't mean the GM will do it. Tambo might take two months after July 1 to assess if they truly can make the roster better. So he should start assessing now to get a head start!

VincenzosOil 03-02-2011 12:27 PM

I agree. Article below is along the same vein and both Fiddler and Upshall are on his list of players we should target in off season.

We have to work towards becoming competitive. Part of rebuilding the team and culture is teaching these kids how to win. As the article states, losing can become cancerous.

We're talking about grabbing veteran character players with specific skill sets that have been missing from this team for far too long. Seems pretty simple and doable in theory but makes me wonder why we haven't addressed these holes to date.

And with our cap space, we can overpay for these 2 on short term contracts.

see this is sense making at its finest. We're not talking about Brad Richards or any other superstar. Just the right player to compliment the players we already have. Nothing major but nothing to sneaze at either. Throw in Glencross and you've got yourself a solid bottom 6.

OilerTyler 03-02-2011 01:13 PM

Try to sign Wisniewski also!

Hall-Horcoff-Eberle
Paajarvi-Gagner-Hemsky
Upshall-Couterier-Jones
Reddox/Jacques-Fiddler-Brule

Whitney-Gilbert
Smid-Wisniewski
Peckham-Petry
Vandermeer

Dubnyk
Khabibulin

We would have to get rid of Cogliano and Foster for this though, and that might be difficult.

tv14 03-02-2011 01:15 PM

In the lines without Penner thread, I said sign Upshall and Nichol but I'd definitely take Fiddler, also would like to bring Hedja back.

McDNicks17 03-02-2011 01:18 PM

A Shawn Belle-esque player will be our highest profile UFA signing this offseason.

Book it.

Yah I agree with Gregor when he says that one of Gagner, Brule or Cogliano has to go by the beginning of next season.

I would trade Cogliano + CGY 3rd to NJ for Clarkson.

RogueJedi 03-02-2011 01:48 PM

It would sure be nice to fill our roster spots with guys like Upshall, Fiddler, Glencross etc and not force the new kids into spots they're not ready for. Overpay these types of players on 2 to 3 year contracts & let the likes of Pitlick, Hamilton, Lander, Teubert, etc develop in the AHL.

Ganz 03-02-2011 03:10 PM

I can already hear Colin Fraser weeping.

I'm in

stoff 03-02-2011 03:26 PM

The players i want as well plus i would try to bring back brewer. Good leadership, knows the place, can help out our d real well.

MisterD 03-02-2011 03:54 PM

I shouldn't be dreaming of all these UFA acquisitions, cuz we know we'll end up getting nothing.

PumpkinBomb 03-02-2011 04:45 PM

Fiddler would be good. I want no part of upshall in our locker room given his past. (I won't go into specifics, but it took place in high school when he played in fort mac, although i'm sure a quick google search would set it straight.)

McOilbleeder 03-02-2011 04:48 PM

I'd rather Boyd Gordon for C, but I'd take either him or Fiddler.

Upshall.....eh. He hasn't been that physical nor does he play on the PK that much.

Give my Pat Dwyer from the 'canes.

Yeah, I wouldn't be making any long term plans if I were Fraser. Looks to me that Brule is better suited for that 4th line C. I'd actually like to see him and Cogs switch spots for the last 20 games.
