The Meszaros Trade: Has it been worth it?

Hello fellow Philly fans,

I thought of this idea elsewhere a while ago so I decided to bring it to HF.

Although some heads were scratching at the time, I think that the Meszaros trade was worth the draft pick given up. He's helping by taking minutes off Chris Pronger and Kimmo Timonen and generally bolstering our defence (usually being the 3rd or 4th best D-man on the team; definitely better than Coburn).

On the O-side, he gets points and scores clutch goals (could be very good in the playoffs in tight situations). Plus, he`s still young, only 25. His large salary is a bit unfortunate but it's not like we signed him to the contract to begin with.

I'm happy, to tell you the truth I was a big fan of his while he was in Ottawa.

On the ice? Yeah. Before the season started, and regarding the salary cap? Largely debatable.

Some will say the first is all that matters. If that's their thing, well, ok.

I agree with Rick. I still don't like hit cap hit, but I think he's done a good job of growing into it.

He's a solid 25 year-old two-way defenseman who will have 500 NHL games under his belt this spring. Worth $4,000,000.

worth more than hartnell, thats for sure :amazed:

RJ8812 03-02-2011 09:48 PM

considering how Gagne's season and gone, without question

DrHamburg 03-02-2011 09:50 PM

Still like the deal.

Giroux tha Damaja 03-02-2011 09:55 PM

Looking at is as a hockey deal, with out of context of other events, the value was pretty good for us. His cap hit and who left the team to make room for him take some of the luster off of it, but its still a decent deal I guess. Its looking like a smarter move in hindsight than I gave Holmgren credit for at the time.

tuckrr 03-02-2011 09:57 PM

he has so much chemistry with the PAYOFF line its unreal.

healthyscratch 03-02-2011 10:00 PM

Winning.

For serious? Hartnell's been a main cog on two of the most important lines this team has seen this year (HBL and, more recently, that stint with Carter and Roo, where he only reinforced the importance of his role and highlighted the plain awesome ability it has of being able to be plugged in with anyone and work the same way).

Is it crazy to think Mez will be our #1 when Pronger can't anchor the first pairing anymore?

duffy9748 03-02-2011 10:12 PM

Definitely worth it, he's been one of our most consistent players all year. Probably are most physical player as well.

I love watching him just straight throw dudes. Never gets old.

BillyShoe1721 03-02-2011 10:24 PM

I'm very happy with him. I was optimistic when the deal was made that he would turn it around here in a lower pressure situation, and he has delivered.

flyersfan018 03-02-2011 10:34 PM

Definitely worth the trade. Wasn't sure what to expect in the beginning of the season but he has panned out very well.

CS 03-02-2011 10:47 PM

How are the hordes I had to fight off taking this?

Because I still love this move by Holmgren.

Haute Couturier 03-02-2011 11:37 PM

I still don't like the idea of them acquiring a $4M defenseman for the third pairing and I don't think he is worth his cap hit.

Yes. He is playing well, but his success is from playing gainst weak competition. He is clearly benefiting from being on a deep team. I think he'd struggle the way he did before if he is supposed to be a go to guy on defense.

Ha ha. At least you're consistently wrong.

Considering the little we gave up, and the improvement to the D, this was definitely a strong move by Homer.

He really set his sights on strengthening the D this year. And he has done.

Let's hope next year he is as keen to sort out a stronger goalie tandem ;)

Hockeypete49 03-03-2011 03:08 AM

I have to admit I was somewhat skeptical at first. However after watching him play this season I have to admit it was a good deal done by our GM.

HoverCarle* 03-03-2011 06:03 AM

I wish we could have just traded Gagne straight up for Meszaros instead of using a 2nd, and getting Walker.

I knew Meszaros' play would be good, but 4 mil is still a big chunk of change and we really need to start keeping picks

Yeah, wish Homer could've swung that too. the pressure is really on us to achieve NOW, because the youth of the organisation & the lack of qulaity picks is becoming pretty evident.

Hope that pressure to win NOW doesn't get to the guys come post season time

we'll have kimmo's cap hit to work with at that point

DrinkFightFlyers 03-03-2011 07:08 AM

Yeap. His cap hit is not favorable, but his on ice play sure is.
