Has Avery Just Played Himself Off This Team?

Three moronic penalties in an otherwise good game. Instead of cruising to a win the Rangers now have to fight through the rest of the game for no reason except Avery's stupidity.

I've usually been an Avery defender because I don't think he's nearly as dirty as he's made out to be. And at his best he's a pretty good player. But he has this infantile need to be the center of attention which has become too detrimental.

Florida Ranger 03-15-2011 09:35 PM

He played himself out of Friday's game. That's all I'll say for now.

nyrleetch 03-15-2011 09:36 PM

Torts looks for anything to bench Avery so possibly.

StaalWars 03-15-2011 09:36 PM

I'm not the only one that read Torts' lips after Tavares scored that goal on Avery's penalty, right?

t3hg00se 03-15-2011 09:38 PM

I hope Avery played himself off the team. He's garbage.

JeffMangum 03-15-2011 09:40 PM

He's toast.

Come on down Wojtek mothafarkin Wolski.

GAGLine 03-15-2011 09:49 PM

He played himself off this team a long time ago. Only problem is he's untradeable. Can't wait until he's gone. Just a selfish, selfish player.

trilobyte 03-15-2011 09:53 PM

The subtle body language of Torts after Avery's last penalty gave me a hint.

It was a tough read, but I picked up a note of displeasure from John.:sarcasm::laugh:

It looked like he said something along the lines of "Gosh darnit I can't stand it *******s mother****ing piece of **** ********ing ***** mother****er mother****er!"

Exactly. I just thought he kept repeating "Mother ****er" over and over.

Vitto79 03-15-2011 10:04 PM

he has another yr left on his contract so where the heck is he gonna go? Yea Wolski should come back in next game though

blueshirt4lyfe 03-15-2011 10:07 PM

Eh, for the most part Avery has avoided those dumb penalties for the most part this season. Seeing as he's the type of guy who plays on the edge, sometimes he steps over it. I don't think he's played himself off this team per se as he can be useful in certain games where we have to be physical.

I do think he takes a seat this Friday for Wolski, Christensen definitely isn't coming out with the way he's been playing lately.

Provolone* 03-15-2011 10:09 PM

Getting a minor up 6-2 isn't that big of a deal to me.

He's a 30 pt 4th/3rd line player, who is less than 2m of cap space. That's a deal to me.

I still remember how he performed vs. the Devils in the playoffs that year. Maybe im being silly holding on to that, but i wanna see what he does if we make the playoffs this year, before thinking his time here is done.

Loffen 03-15-2011 10:09 PM

He'll sit for another game or two. Possibly.

His first penalty didn't bother me as much as his second one. There's no need to get the lumber that high.

Rangers44* 03-15-2011 10:17 PM

So he played a bad game, but Tort was really overreacting in a blowout game. Avery will play again when somebody gets hurt.

GWOW 03-15-2011 10:26 PM

Avery's a ticking time bomb. The idea that the Rangers have this great winning pct with him in the lineup was proven a fallacy the last few years. IMO, it's just a matter of time he gets a major in a close game with playoff implications

I can't call him a 3rd liner anymore. This team is deep with responsible guys you can count on. Our 3rd/4th line of Feds-Boyle-Prust is perfect and should be left alone.

Wolski is a huge contributor in the shootout. I guarantee you if there is a repeat of last year and it's one or go home, Wolski is in the lineup over Avery.

And if that's the case, why wait until the last game of the season?

Avery should be a healthy scratch. With the way these guys are getting injured, he should be back on the ice in no time.

Kane One 03-15-2011 10:27 PM

He's probably out for next game, but I can see him playing on Sunday against the Pens.

bobbop 03-15-2011 10:28 PM

I think we are watching the end of the Sean Avery era in New York.

RGY 03-15-2011 10:29 PM

There's no reason avery should be playing instead of Wolski. At least when Wolski isnt producing he isnt taking stupid penalties and he is still useful for the shootout. And he does still make things happen when he isnt scoring.

DekeR 03-15-2011 11:40 PM

Agree the first penalty was just a bump in the road, the second one with the high hit wasn't the brightest star in the sky moment for Avery. Like it was said before, he has another year left on that ridiculous contract so he isn't going anywhere.

I'm pretty sure the exact quote was "that ****ing mother ****er." I only point it out because it's indicative of a lot more disgust with Avery himself than just the isolated penalty.

Tawnos 03-15-2011 11:56 PM

I hope so and I've been an Avery supporter and backer for a long time.

I don't hope so because I don't like him or I've soured on his game. I hope so because his main purpose has become redundant. That purpose? To bring emotion and fire into the game. This team doesn't need that from him. Prust, Callahan and Dubinsky do that just fine and do it with more on the scoresheet and more utility off the scoresheet. He's become obsolete.

John Torturella 03-16-2011 12:14 AM

Honestly, I think its bull ****. I said it in the other thread. The roughing penalty at the end wasnt great, but it was essentially meaningless. It was a 4 goal game inside 5 minutes. Tortorella just looked like a hot head.

John Tortorella obviously has a vendetta against Avery. He even said it on TSN a few years ago. Tortorella has essentially destroyed Sean Avery. He was a very effective player.

The two other calls in this game were BS. The Islanders player turned his back a split second before the hit. Incidental contact caused the goalie interference.

Everyone here has cried about Avery not being the same. Well that player takes penalties, and bad ones at times. Tonights penalty would have been bad if it was a 1 goal game. But it was a 4 goal game.

Also, if Tortorella did not want anything to happen towards the end of the game, why even put Avery on the ice? Im sure he should understand that players are more likely to do stupid things when they have a big lead.

The main point is that John Tortorella obviously overreacted. If it had been ANY other player, would he have flipped out like such? I say no.

chip chipperson* 03-16-2011 12:37 AM

i think he is out for a few games. def a stupid penalty in 3rd.

nyr2k2 03-16-2011 12:41 AM

Possibly. He's never been on Torts' good side, and acting idiotic like he did tonight certainly won't endear him.

He'll probably be out there a few times before the season ends, but the "era" is over for sure.
