Rangers set to sign Carl Hagelin

Quote:

The Rangers are expected to sign Michigan senior left wing Carl Hagelin once the Wolverines' season ends, a source with knowledge of the situation told The Post.

Should Hagelin, who was selected in the sixth round of the 2007 draft (168th overall), complete his season before the Blueshirts' AHL Connecticut affiliate is eliminated from the playoffs, the plan would be for the 5-foot-11, 176-pound Swede to join the Whale.

Hagelin would become eligible for unrestricted free agency this summer if he does not sign with the Rangers by Aug. 15, but that is not the Swedish native's intention.

Regionals begin next Friday and Frozen Four begins three weeks from tomorrow.

CT is currently in playoff position. Brooks wrote the Whale's regular season ends on March 27. It's April 10.

Great news I hear nothing but good things about this kid

AJRanger 03-16-2011 07:38 AM

Great news!

Didn't Brooks report the rangers would pass on hagelin a while back? I remember the red wings being interested in him if that was the case.

Seams like a no brainer to me, a little swedish talent can't hurt the pipe.

No, it was purely speculation by some guy in Michigan, but of course written as though it were a possibility just so his story could get more attention. I'm sure a lot of detroit fans are aware of Hagelin and would be interested in signing him.

There was never any indication from Hagelin that he wouldn't sign with the Rangers, nor was there ever any indication from the Rangers that they wouldn't offer him a contract. They tried to sign him last summer but he wanted to finish his 4 years.

The opposite occurred. Bob Duff of the Windsor Star wrote the Rangers did not intend on signing Hagelin and he linked Hagelin to the Wings. Windsor Star covers the Wings.

Brooks wrote a few days later about the Rangers wanting to sign Hagelin and tried to sign him last summer but Hagelin wanted to finish school. The Rangers want to sign the kid.

The links are somewhere on this forum.

This is great news! Big sigh of relief!

Berenson's got a great track record of making NHL-ready players.

Smart move to stay in school. This kid will make it very hard on the Rangers to keep him down.

Plus, it's good to see Hartford get replenished. For a while it was looking like it was becoming a no-man's land with all the kids playing with the big club.

Glennsoe 03-16-2011 09:12 AM

Great news indeed...

Vitto79 03-16-2011 09:26 AM

2 thumbs up..........is he eligible to play in CT this yr? not gonna lie have no clue when the Michigan season is over

Stugots 03-16-2011 09:44 AM

He still has to finish his classes though. I hope he doesn't fail any if he joins the Whale for the playoffs lol.

I think he would be. I know players out of juniors are exempt from Clear Day Roster rules, I would assume NCAA players fall under the same exemption. I could be wrong, though.

It all depends on how many classes he's in. Classes at Michigan end April 19th, seeing as he's a senior and a very bright person, I'd go out on a limb and say it's conceivable for him to finish his coursework while playing in the A.

RangerBoy 03-16-2011 10:54 AM

Hagelin can sign an ATO to play in the AHL. Rest of the season plus playoffs. His 2 year ELC begins next season. Any of the Rangers prospects can do the same thing. Once their season is over, Werek,Bourque and Horak can sign ATOs to play in CT and their 3 year ELCs would begin next season. 18-21 year olds sign 3 year ELCs. 22-23 year olds sign 2 year ELCS. 24 year old signs 1 year ELC. September 15 is the age cut off. Players age of 9/15 determines how many years on the ELC.

Sorry but I dont know anymore about him then whats read on HFB.

Is he Ortmeyer 2.0?
Slightly better offencively?
More potential?

I want to hear from the Michigan guys who have watched both come through their system.

Based purely on stats I don't think he's Ortmeyer. Hagelin is an over a point per game player in college. Ortmeyer wasn't. I know stats don't tell the whole story.

A lot better than Ortmeyer was offensively and a lot more potential. Hagelin can be a great third liner playing a two way game, or an okay second liner.

You are selling him a bit short comparing him to Ortmeyer. Of course, Ortmeyer was known solely for his defense, but his game isn't as well rounded as Hagelin's potentitally can be.

The Sweetness 03-16-2011 12:26 PM

Good news. Hagelin seems like the kind of player you want to have in your organisation. It will be interesting to see how his offensive game translates to the pro's. I love how he seems to up his game in clutch situations. He seems more NHL ready than Kreider even though I haven't seen Hagelin play that much.

- plays 2-way game, plays in all game situations
- serious wheels
- plays big in big games
- smart player
- fan favorite at Michigan and co-captain of their team

Red Berenson compared Hagelin to Darren Helm/Kris Draper before this season.

Walt Kyle(Northern Michigan coach/former Rangers assistant coach under Ron Low)is quoted in the story. He feels Hagelin has a chance to step into the Rangers line-up right out of college hockey.

That's a good article. Text below.

I don't think the Ortmeyer comparison is accurate either, but Orts was a PPG player his senior year at Michigan, and close the year before. So while I agree that stats don't tell the story, and don't think the Ortmeyer comparison is a good one, it just goes to show that you never know how a player will translate from college to the NHL. Especially if you are just reading stats.
