Ales Kotalik has been placed on re-entry waivers by Calgary.

At this point the Habs may as well claim him. With Pleks/Halpern/MaxPac out we are dangerously thin up front and have already stripped our farm team of its key players. His 50% caphit would be 1.5 million with 1 year remaining on his contract.

Kotalik-Gomez-Gionta
Cammy-Eller-AK
Pouliot-Desharnais-Moen
Pyatt-Fanhabtic-White

Its not pretty but it would have to do in the stretch. Either way we are a team that relies on goaltending and Carey Price is the key component to this team regardless of who is injured.

thadd 03-16-2011 07:35 AM

Nah, Edmonton should claim him so that their farm team doesn't suffer so much.

Lunatik* 03-16-2011 07:56 AM

I doubt any team claims him, although he has shown some life in teh AHL... 19 points in 18 games... is the only regular player with a higher than .5 point per game pace and already leads the club in +/-

Aren't those valid reasons for why someone should pick up Kotalik at a price of 1.5 million?

Apparently Calgary wants him for the home stretch. It was on TSN last night. He impressed during his stint in the AHL.

vipernsx 03-16-2011 09:38 AM

Yikes!

That makes me want PG to pick him off waivers even more. Go Pierre! ;)

The Big Foot 03-16-2011 09:54 AM

If another team takes him, is he eligible for the playoffs?

Pheasant the peasant 03-16-2011 10:17 AM

I like Kotalik. Its sad that he has played so poorly before his AHL stint. Glad to see he took it well, and really hussled.

Jon Rheault, a teammate on Kotaliks AHL team (Abbotsford Heat) said of Kotaliks demotion and play since joining:

"I was completely surprised by his attitude ... You can only imagine how tough that would be, to be in his position and come down here. You'd assume that most people would have a bad attitude. But he's been a great leader for us. It's been a great experience for us. I know it's not the best thing in his career right now, but he's handling it real well. I was really, really surprised. He's gained everyone's respect."

Is it still likely he will be bought out in the summer? Any info would be appreciated, Calgary fans.

wingscapsfan 03-16-2011 11:19 AM

I believe that a team may claim him, although he cannot actually play for another team. I'm pretty sure that a team cannot add players that are outside of their organization at this point in the season.

You can play him during the regular season. But he would not be eligible for the playoffs this year.

perhaps, but i think more people will look at his 30 points in his last 91 games and the fact he is skilled enough to get by on talent alone in the AHL

Vitto79 03-16-2011 11:28 AM

So Kotalik is back on the Flames then?

he is if he clears

SouvenirCity 03-16-2011 11:49 AM

Someone pick him up, so I can stop seeing Ales Kotalik waiver threads every 3 days

MALKIN NTHE MIDDLE 03-16-2011 12:08 PM

Again, lol.

Dragon Priest 03-16-2011 02:59 PM

Maybe this time he will stick with the big club after his successful stint in the minors.

Natural Habs Fan 03-16-2011 03:29 PM

I agree with the posters suggesting PG make a claim. We need some depth and Kotalik has some talent.

Hampe 03-16-2011 03:48 PM

He'll clear.

Lunatik* 03-16-2011 03:57 PM

i read on a Flames board he cleared, he's practicing with the club anyways

Marc the Habs Fan 03-16-2011 04:37 PM

Do you Habs fans realize he is signed for next season? No thanks.

SolidSnakeUS 03-16-2011 06:31 PM

He's like a good game of volleyball, they keep him in the air and won't allow him to settle anywhere.

Unless he can play a significant role in getting the flames in to the playoffs and helping them win a round, I have to think the team would still buy him out this summer.

Personally, I think they should buy him out regardless of how he plays from here on, like even a miraculous PPG pace with GW playoff goals, just based on the fact that I know Kotalik can be a tease when he wants to.

Analyzer 03-16-2011 06:46 PM

If he didn't have another year, guaranteed Montréal would get him.
