What to do with Prospal?

With today's game done, I believe he is on a nine game point scoring streak with a few of those points coming on the PP. That gives him 5 goals and 17 points in 20 games. I always find myself yelling at Prospal from my couch every now and then as he does make some stupid plays, but he really does seem to get the rest of the team and especially Gaborik going.

Will we re-sign him with all the young talent coming in? Does he fit?

I Am Chariot 03-20-2011 02:26 PM

Let's see if we make the playoffs

clmetsfan 03-20-2011 02:27 PM

Bring him back for another 1-year deal. He's a valuable player, just like Fedotenko, and as we've seen this year, you can't have enough depth.

Boom Boom Geoffrion* 03-20-2011 02:28 PM

Bring him back. He's a terrific teammate, solid player, a veteran leader, and won't cost much.

BlueshirtBlitz 03-20-2011 02:29 PM

I don't think we should resign him unless it's for REALLY cheap, but he does not deserve the hate he gets around here and he's been BIG for us.

levski87 03-20-2011 02:35 PM

Depends on how his knee feels next year. I just don't think he can last a full 82 game season without burning out.

Loffen 03-20-2011 02:38 PM

I don't know. His health is definitely a concern...

Barnaby 03-20-2011 02:39 PM

Def re-sign him to a one year deal. He would be a nice, and cost effective flank to Richards, and Gabby...

XLJ 03-20-2011 02:43 PM

It would be a mistake bringing him back. He is way too slow of a skater. Prospal has been useful on the pp but he doesn't do much 5 on 5. I doubt he stays healthy for a full year too. I hope they dont bring him back.

Ih8theislanders 03-20-2011 02:46 PM

I don't really want to re-sign him...I want spots open for Hagelin/Kreider, and his health is always a concern. I wouldn't be too disappointed if we re-sign him tho..he's a very likable player.

wolfgaze 03-20-2011 02:46 PM

I'm going to guess for Vinny his options will be Rangers or retire for next season... If that's really the case, offer him $1 mil and that's it.... I think a lot will hinge on whether or not the Rangers can land Richards.

TheRedViper 03-20-2011 02:48 PM

I don't want to re-sign either. If the summer goes as planned, where are we getting the roster opening for him? Especially if the team wants Kreider up, or even Hagelin.

BUT, he is now outscoring Frolov, in less than half the games played lol

rangers4ever2007 03-20-2011 02:51 PM

would love to keep him, but need to give the kreiders and grachevs a chance

Deric 03-20-2011 02:56 PM

Other guys will be injured on & off all year long. Gotta have depth. Gaborik seems to like him too. If there's too many guys give him the healthy scratch.

PanMan 03-20-2011 02:56 PM

He can't skate. We should not re-sign him. He's been good for us though.

They WILL have the chance... but if they can't beat out an aging injury prone Prospal, then they should be down in Hartford anyway. This move allows you to have an open-competition, but doesn't clog the pipeline in the event that Kreider really proves himself in training camp. If Prospal gets hurt, then you have depth with youth. If he gets beat out, then you have veteran depth. He's also a veteran leader, who some of these young guys could really use - especially come playoff time. Lest we forget, also cost effective!

TheRedViper 03-20-2011 02:59 PM

We're going to be close enough to the cap next year as it is, don't want him back on a guaranteed contract. If he'll accept a TC tryout, and wins a spot that way, well I can't really argue that...

This...but I doubt he'll accept a tryout offer. He's played well for us for two years, and took cheap contracts..

RangerFan10 03-20-2011 03:25 PM

This is another Shanahan situation, IMO. Let him go. He's done well by us, but you've gotta upgrade that spot in the off-season whether it's internally or otherwise

I know we're at a point where we're addicted to youth because of how well guys like Cally, Dubi, Anisimov, Stepan, Sauer, McDonagh, Staal, etc. are playing but I don't think you leave open spots for guys like Hagelin and Kreider just because they look like good prospects and other prospects and young guys have flourished.

I'll take a Fedotenko back for another year if it means allowing Hagelin and Kreider to get more experience.

Fitzy 03-20-2011 03:33 PM

I don't think we can re-sign him.

Hard to say that about a guy who has produced like he has, but he doesn't have the speed to keep up with our style of play for long. If Zuccarello progresses he should be able to fill the role Prospal does right now, with better legs.

Prospal is still a 70 point hockey player but he is on a beer leaguer's legs.

I agree with this, but with Prospal it's his knee that i'm worried about. I'd love for him to be a bottom 6 PP specialist but I think he deserves more money than I'd want us to pay.

I do want us to bring Feds back, though. Let Kreider or Hagelin or whoever rip it up in Connecticut.

thewaitingisover 03-20-2011 03:42 PM

I can't imagine why anybody wouldn't want him back, at least for another year. No, he's not 25, but he's still solid, talented, energetic, and inexpensive. Provides a good veteran presence, has been putting up points on a nightly basis, and Gab apparently likes playing with him.

xxxZENxxx 03-20-2011 03:46 PM

I think it is quite optimistic to think that Prospal will be back. In the end... it will depend on whether some young guys (i.e. Hagelin, Kreider, Grachev, etc.) make the team, and if Sather can sign someone better (i.e. Richards). He will be a guy signed at the end of the summer on an "if needed" basis. And it will definitely be for much less than he makes now.

Sticky Fingers 03-20-2011 03:55 PM

He's 0.8 points/game since he got back from his injury. And on top of that he's a good team mate. A no brainer if he comes cheap imo.
