The Caps return home after a six game road trip. It’s been two weeks since the Capitals played a game in the friendly confines of the Verizon Center. They return home to play a hungry Canes team somewhat out of the playoff hunt. While the Canes are five points out of the coveted eighth seed, they have been playing well down the stretch, hoping they can catch the Buffalo Sabres. While the Canes seem to be out of it, the Caps are deep in a race for the first seed. They are tied with the Penguins and both teams sit only two points behind the first place Flyers for first in the Eastern Conference. The Caps have played more games thus far on the season so, they will likely need a bit of help to keep their chances of another Eastern Conference regular season title within reach.

With just over two weeks remaining before the Stanley Cup Playoffs begin, the Capitals may be on the verge of getting some key players back. Alex Ovechkin and Jason Arnott both practiced with the team in full pads on Monday, while Mike Green skated briefly in full pads, but mostly before the rest of the team took the ice, according to the Washington Post. It would appear Green is still a ways from returning, but Ovechkin and Arnott seem to be closing in on game action.

Carolina netminder Cam Ward leads the NHL with 1,968 saves this season, a franchise record that eclipsed the previous mark held by Sean Burke. Burke had 1,844 saves in 1995-96. Only six NHL netminders have reached the 2,000-save plateau since the 2005-06 season, led by Roberto Luongo (then with Florida), who made 2,275 saves in 2005-06.

Only once since the Hartford/Carolina franchise entered the NHL in 1979-80 have the Capitals swept the season series. That was in 1997-98 when Washington went 4-0 against the Hurricanes in the season prior to the formation of the Southeast Division. Washington advanced to the Stanley Cup final that season.
