Matt Gilroy - RW

OK. I thought we needed a thread to discuss the pros/cons of Matt Gilroy playing on the wing. I do not want this thread to turn into a "Girlroy" bashing.

I personally have a lot of time for Gilroy and the effort and work he puts in. I think it's gonna be an interesting two games with Gilly on the RW.

what does he bring?

defensively: PK, shot blocking, defensively responsible checking forward

offensively: he's shown good passing vision in a few games, and when he's pinched you can see he has a good hockey IQ for how to cycle the puck behind the net and get chances in front.

i'm completely devastated about Cally - but where there is catastrophy there is opportunity.

There are NO pro's about this. How hard is it for some of you to understand how soft this guy is. It's unbearable soft. You're going to see him dump the puck when a body is nearing him.

what? he's barely played on the PK, doesnt block shots much and doesn't check much.

His 19 assists in 125 games don't point to great passing either to me.

nyr2k2 04-05-2011 01:56 PM

Gilroy sucks. He is tissue soft. And now we expect him to cycle and forecheck? Not seeing it.

I'd be surprised if he was anything other than awful.

OverTheCap 04-05-2011 01:57 PM

All I know is that a line with EC and Gilroy on it is probably one of the softest lines in the NHL. The two of them get knocked off the puck so damn easily and go down like they were shot by a sniper whenever anyone touches them. Not even Avery's presence on that line can help them.

Gilroy will really have to toughen up in order to survive playoff hockey. He's a winger now, so he needs to forecheck hard and make a concerted effort to battle along the boards, just like the rest of the team. No more of this wimpy nonsense.

rody 04-05-2011 02:07 PM

Gilroy has played forward and is pretty good defensively. I have wanted this from the begining of the season.

offdacrossbar 04-05-2011 02:11 PM

rather have cally out there draggin his dead limb around.

thats what i think about matt girlroy at forward.

RyanBozak 04-05-2011 02:13 PM

I stated that The Rangers should try Gilroy at wing last year during one of the first weeks of the season.

I've always seen more offensive prowess to his game than defense. He might be soft as TP, at least the stuff I use, but the kid does have some skates when he wants to and has decent vision. Hopefully he'll be a little useful.

Interesting that you believe he'll play more defense as a forward than he did playing defense. I tend to disagree...

Chalfdiggity3 04-05-2011 02:16 PM

THe kid sucks, and needs to be tossed from the team, hes a waste of capspace. All the guy possesses is wheels thats it. He has NO shot, cant pass, doesnt forecheck, is soft, and will get about 2min of icetime. idk wtf torts is thinking but what a complete waste of a roster spot.

He reminds me of gomez, comming into the offensive zone then shooting a soft wrister right into the goalies chest.

I wish he was half as good as Gomez was.

Please define "pretty good."

Better than DZ, worse than McCabe qualifies as pretty good I guess.

JeffMangum 04-05-2011 02:33 PM

Gilroy has played one NHL shift as a forward.

He was a -1 in that very shift.

WeWillWinTonight 04-05-2011 02:37 PM

How much ice time is he really looking at, and in that short amount of time will he be a liability?

No, it doesn't. McCabe isn't good. He's ALMOST good, so Gilroy is worse than almost good.

I see Steven Mastrosimone beat me to the next line I was about to type.

This isn't a "Girlroy" bashing, he bashed himself.

**** me. Get well soon Cally. Please.

I was being sarcastic.

I bet Gilroy will be a little better defensively as a forward than people are giving him credit for. Although I think he's going to be on ice for about 4 minutes total per game. He just doesn't have any strength with the puck, although he does wheel quite well through the neutral zone so that's a plus, I guess?:help:

TrueBlue9 04-05-2011 02:46 PM

Pro: gilroy does this for one game logging 5 minutes of ice time until Drury returns

Con: everything else

I think the hate for gilroy is disproportionate. i'm trying to look optimistically for something that gilroy can bring or at least help out with. i guess we won't know for sure until thursday at the least.

also, it seems that drury may be back Sat. i figure the gilroy RW experiment may only last 4 minutes of ice time total.

My thoughts exactly. I don't expect much, if anything, from a move to forward.

I really don't think it is.

He's just...terrible. He can't do anything right. He's weak as can be on the puck and in the corners, he's constantly out of position, he thinks he's still a forward whenever the puck gets dumped in, and on top of all of that, he doesn't even add any offense. He's Marc-Andre Bergeron without the 35 points, which is a complete liability.

Fitzy 04-05-2011 02:53 PM

Here is what I like about this...

1. Versatility. If we end up with some injured or penalized defensemen during the game, we don't get stuck in an awkward situation where we only have 3 dmen to rotate.

We can move him to D. whenever.

2. His skating could work.

3. Maybe he'd be an okay PK guy, who knows.

I don't think he'll play a lot of minutes. So I don't think it'll make that big of an impact.

Umm...he has nowhere to go but up?

:(

NYP_Brooksie Larry Brooks
Read it and weep. Tortorella: Callahan has broken ankle, "Will be out indefinitely. It's longterm." Gilroy will move up to RW Thurs v Atl

Anyone see this?
