Islanders' Weight: Refs Had It In For Us
Weight not happy with officiating

Injured captain Doug Weight said his time behind the Islanders ' bench at the end of the season was eye-opening, and not just because of the player-coach role reversal.

With a firsthand glimpse of what the coaches deal with on a nightly basis, Weight said he was very upset with the officiating. "We know it's not a crooked league, but the point is there is a bias,"

"It was pretty evident that the games in [the officials'] minds weren't important to us," said Weight, who spent four games behind the bench.

"I just wanted to say that it wasn't warranted," Weight said of the treatment the Islanders received as a result of [the Pens] game. "We played hard all year, had a couple of physical battles and it got blown out of proportion."

Does he need to say this on the day of the lottery?

Not really what I want to hear from our new unofficial assistant coach

mitchy22 04-12-2011 06:33 PM

Is he technically no longer an employee at this point?

That'd be a nice way to air a grievance without the financial slap on the wrist. (As long as he doesn't become an assistant coach on the team. I agree as that would not be the way to start off. If he's just in the organization somewhere, I'm cool with this.)

If it makes you feel better, I think he said it Sat or Sun, not the day of the lottery.

well it had to be said. it was ridiculous how they were just handing out 10 minute misconducts for nothing.

Not sure if any of this was new, but this is actually what caught my eye from the article:

In a weird way, I'm kind of glad that KO and Grabner are not going.

This is kinda of a big deal coming from someone as classy, well spoken and respected as Doug Weight.

Either that or he knows he has a definite job if he starts acting like a clown before he joins the Isles management. :sarcasm:

Howie Rose said it best, The Islanders need to address this issue in the off season in a professional matter, not like some people on this board that want to burn the NHL office down.

They should make a tape and present it to the league in an honest and respectful way and say ok Commish, this is what we think and this is what we see. What are your thoughts?

If they do this at least they throw it out there in a dignified way that says to the league that we want to be treated with respect just like everyone else. If we hold this grudge and it becomes US VS THEM attitude then dont be shocked when there will be ALOT of 5 on 3's against the Islanders next year.

Wang/Snow need to be the adult Parent here going to the teacher/principal and nipping this problem in the butt ASAP!!

It's better said than suffering in silence and accepting it because we are afraid of more repaisals. The referees are human and some have thin skins, make biased decisions based on being criticized.
Protest the right way, just don't take it and say nothing.
As for Colon, his body of work for the whole NHL should lead Bettman to move him out for a more competent individual.
Wouldn't mind seeing Shanny in that spot.

NHL resembles WWF

......too often.

It's lost a lot of credibility.

When Gillies was escorted off the ice by the refs for doing nothing at the end of 1 of his first games back from the suspension was nuts. I've been watching hockey for 45 years and I never saw that before. That was the game where Tavares yelled at the ref and said "What did he do?"

crashthenet 04-13-2011 08:31 AM

Someone needed to say it. It has not been acknowledged publicly by the league with a fine or a request for a meeting. The league office will always lack credibilty, this years events continue the tradition. The team fine for the Islanders was ridiculous. The campbell email-gate was so far out there and the appearance that he was hand-picking refs for his son's games?

This team, unfortunately will never get its' due until it adds a true NHL insider to the management team, much like Tampa did. The team is run exclusively by Americans with no toronto connection.

On a somewhat related note, did anyone watch the Chicago game Sunday and see Abdelkader's hit on Seabrook? How in the world was there no penalty or subsequent review?
