Ansar Khan (Mlive): Red Wings' goal: Maintain heavy traffic in front of Coyotes goalie Ilya Bryzgalov
Quote:

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Big goaltenders such as Phoenixís 6-foot-3 Ilya Bryzgalov donít leave opponents much room to shoot, making it even more vital to get traffic in front of the net.

The Detroit Red Wings are making Bryzgalov work to see the puck. Itís one of the reasons they lead the Western Conference quarterfinal series 2-0 heading into tonight's Game 3.

In Game 2, the Red Wings scored two goals while Tomas Holmstrom was screening Bryzgalov and another on Holmstromís tip in front of the net. Danny Cleary provided a screen for a goal in Game 1.

"He had a hard time seeing the puck," Holmstrom said. "We got to him (Saturday), but for sure heís going to bounce back. He played great in the third (period) for them, gave them a chance to get back in the game.

"We got to get more pucks to the net and more screens on him."

The Red Wings have the personnel to do it. In addition to Holmstrom, whoís been the best in the business for more than a dozen years, and Cleary, they also rely on big bodies Todd Bertuzzi and Johan Franzen to crowd the crease.

"Itís always difficult," Bryzgalov said. "This team, they have the skills. They crowd around the net, they drive the net. Theyíre always making my life miserable in front of the net. Itís not only Holmstrom, itís other guys, too, like Cleary, Franzen. Itís somebody always there. You have to battle through to see and find the puck."

Franzen didnít practice Sunday after needing stitches to close a large gash on his forehead and cuts on his nose and upper lip when he was checked into the boards by Shane Doan.

Franzen returned midway through the second period and general manager Ken Holland said he is expected to play tonight.

Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said Sunday that defenseman Ed Jovanovski will play tonight, too, after leaving midway through Game 2 with an upper-body injury on a hit by Darren Helm.

Even though they lost on Saturday, the Coyotes carried the play in third and I don't think they go away from Game 2 feeling as bad since they almost pulled all the way back even when they were badly outplayed. I see them to coming out very aggressive to get their home crowd into the game. The Wings need to have a strong first period and strong first 10 minutes and keep the mistakes to a minimum and try not to play catch up all night. I bet Doan tries to lead by example and set a tone of playing physical. He'll be a terror and he'll lead the way for them and Nick will have to keep him from taking over the game. Bryzgalov has been shaky in two games and the Wings need to continue screening him and exploiting how slow he is at getting down and reacting to shots he doesn't see. They've had a few goals where the screens are so perfect that they go in and he doesn't have time to react. A win tonight obviously doesn't end the series but puts them in a very tight spot...take care of business, fellas!

How come they play at 10:30 when phoenix isn't even in the pacific timezone? shouldn't it start at 9 when they play at phoenix?

They need it to be late enough so that the Flyers-Sabres game will be over to set up the doubleheader. There is no valid hockey reason.

mizunox 04-18-2011 01:02 PM

Apparently Jovanovski is expected to play tonight. The way he hobbled off after the Helm hit I didn't think he'd be back so soon.

they are still 3 hours behind eastern time zone because they do not follow daylight savings time unlike every other state

Yep - from Mar to Oct or whenever we ARE in the PDT zone.

mindfly 04-18-2011 02:18 PM

Really?
You learn something new everything.. obviously i won't watch this live as it starts at 4:30 in the morning but will watch it on-demand... best of luck to the guys but I fear many powerplays to phoenix and a very desperate team, much like the washington-rangers game. Teams will do anything in their power to avoid going down 3-0 in a series.

Wings need to show up tonight on time. Take care of business tonight and don't give the Yotes any life.

It will be a very difficult game to win though IF the Yotes actually want to be in the playoffs.

For some reason tonight feels to me like the Coyotes game to lose. I hope I'm wrong.

This is the playoffs. No pain no gain. Suck it up.

Xvash2 04-18-2011 05:55 PM

Ugh, hopefully I won't have to do battle with my roommate. He's a fairweather Bruins fan and their game starts at 7:30 and despite the fact that its my TV he'll probably pitch a fit like the small child that he is.

Watching Datsyuk channel the hockey gods is worth losing sleep for imo.

Anyone know who the Vs. announcing crew will be for the game tonight? I'm trying to determine if I need to get speakers hooked up to the computer to view or listen to a stream.

If memory serves it's about 45 minutes from Phoenix, or maybe that's from Scottsdale, been a while. But yea, Glendale is a bit of a haul from Phx.

I heard something about Franzen having an ankle issue... anything to that or was someone blowing smoke my way?

Believe it or not that is one of the major reasons I'm thinking of either waking up at 4:30 or actually staying up. It's only 2 hours 15 minutes away now and I'm not even that tired, but I think I'll still take a quick nap.

TheOtherOne 04-18-2011 07:33 PM

2 more hours til the Datsyuk show!

I hope the refs sit down and shut the **** up this game. I didn't get to watch the last one but 16 penalties is ridiculous, I don't even care whether all the calls were legit or not. Nobody wants to watch half a game worth of power plays.

Couldn't of said it any better!...or even some consistency with the calls!...Lets go Wings!!

TheMoreYouKnow 04-18-2011 07:58 PM

Man, no way I can stay up for this game. I'd get about 4 hours of sleep if I stayed up for this one and I'm getting too old for that.
