21 goals as a rookie is great. Do you guys think that in his prime years he'll become a regular 30+ goal scorer?

Vitto79 05-02-2011 06:01 PM

he got 21 as a rook so yea he can do it

he has the smarts skill and talent to do so, but let me see a few years of Stepan first.. what if Stepan hits 10 goals next year and only 15 the next year. . he has only been in the league 1 year.

NaturalIce 05-02-2011 06:03 PM

Its definately possible, he was in the right place a lot of the time this year but I noticed he just tries way too many centering passes.

Pugs35 05-02-2011 06:05 PM

Eh, I don't really think so. He doesn't really have the kind of shot to hit 30.

Hopefully he's a 20 goal, 40+ assist guy every year though.

Swept In Seven 05-02-2011 06:07 PM

Possibly. I can see him potting 30 and getting 40-50 assists in his career year if he develops in to what I think he will.

eco's bones 05-02-2011 06:09 PM

Stepan has more of a playmaker mentality. I think this year was more about just playing but I think when he really finds his game he'll be much more of a set up guy than a shooter.

BlueshirtBlitz 05-02-2011 06:14 PM

He scores goals by being smart and being in the right position. I don't think that'll lead to many 30 goal seasons because you really need to be a sniper to do that.

I hope/think he can become a 20-25g 45+ assist guy, like a Brad Richards.

hpNYR 05-02-2011 06:17 PM

I don't know if he'll do it consistently, but he'll have a good amount of 30+ goal seasons.

New York RKY 05-02-2011 06:29 PM

Once he fully develops, I think he has a really good shot and can possibly do it for a few seasons.

I do look at him as more of a playmaker though as someone mentioned (a Richards-lite in his prime hopefully).

not exactly sure why, but i have a feeling next year will be a disappointing one for him. Something about these young guys putting up big points in their first season.

Overall, borderline 30goal scorer. I'd lean towards no.

Sophomore slump.

Would rather have a 20-40/50 guy personally. That's what Stepan's game is/was. Playmaker.

wolfgaze 05-02-2011 06:45 PM

He could have potted 25 goals this season if he didn't' go on an 18 game goal scoring drought to start the season after his hat trick on opening night....

That being said, I think he's far more likely to be in the 20-25 goal range moving forward. I think he shot the puck more frequently this season than he might have liked to because there wasn't as much time and space as he might have been accustomed to playing at the NCAA level.

Ih8theislanders 05-02-2011 06:46 PM

Maybe a year or two where he hits it, but not consistently. I'm pretty confident he'll hit 20 pretty consistently though.

Which is not necessarily a bad thing because it shows a player who knows how to adapt. I'm sure sooner rather than later, giving complementary linemates, we'll see the playmaker Stepan is emerge. He definitely showed flashes of it this season.

TreeSapLlama 05-02-2011 06:52 PM

I wouldn't be surprised if he hit 30, but to do it consistently he will have to work on his shot. As many people have mentioned, it is his hockey smarts that has gotten him his goals so far. That can't carry many players to 30 regularly.

I see his stats being more in line with someone like Thornton (not as high obviously), with a relatively low amount of goals in proportion to a very high amount of assists. That will depend on his teammates as well.

JeffMangum 05-02-2011 07:01 PM

He may do it once or twice, but his goal totals are the least of my concerns. 40+ assists, 25 goals a year is what we'll likely see.

Panfork 05-02-2011 07:03 PM

Stepan's been compared to Stastny a lot when he was in college. He'll probably become something similar. Averaging about 20 goals, 40, maybe 50 assists every year. Stastny will probably hit 30 a few times, so will Stepan.

Inferno 05-02-2011 07:08 PM

i think hes more of a 20/50 guy myself.

This.

I would be content if he never hit 30 goals in a season in his career. Hopefully he does it once or twice.

haha, you can't lie, you know he would help our Power Play a shart load along wtih Richards

That Stepan Guy 05-02-2011 08:13 PM

I can see him 25 soon, but he might be a few years away from 30. Next year I can see him going 25+35 or 20+40 depending on his position. If he plays top line with Gaborik and possibly Richards he might go 30+30(+). In the long run if he becomes as good as some hope, I can see him becoming a 20+40(+) 1st or 2nd line center.
