Is he related to Gomez by any chance?

FlyingKostitsyn 05-13-2011 08:18 AM

You mean THE Raphael?

Courageously facing Theodore finally pays off

HabsDood 05-13-2011 08:20 AM

Seems like he can score..

What's with the Gomez comment?

loudi94 05-13-2011 08:21 AM

He looks like a pretty good PP guy. Can he play D or is he going to be another 13th forward that happens to be a defenceman?

Dutchy 05-13-2011 08:21 AM

Well there's a Habs connection since he played with Metropolit and DiPietro this season.

neofury* 05-13-2011 08:22 AM

AHL contract I'm assuming.

Gomez... Diaz... just a cultural name joke. Turns out he's Swiss and plays for the Swiss national team. I'm not sure if he's in the World Championships right now, but he's played for Switzerland several times dating back to 2004 according to his Wiki page.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rafael_Diaz

EDIT: He indeed is at the World Championships right now. Anyone want to start a Pierre Gauthier meme? Scout Jaromir Jagr. Sign Rafael Diaz.

EDIT 2: He was named Switzerland's player of the game for the Switzerland/Norway game on May 5th.

OpenIceHit 05-13-2011 08:24 AM

The song is so poetic I thougth it was the commentator...

OpenIceHit 05-13-2011 08:26 AM

A Defenseman under 6'. What did you expect?

Watsatheo 05-13-2011 08:30 AM

Oh they already made a compilation for him.

What if the reporters made a mistake and confused Diaz and Emelin in terms of Habs interest and being close to done on a 1 year deal...

Habs 4 Life 05-13-2011 08:35 AM

Welcome to the team but I have no f....... idea who you are!!:D

5'11" 194lbs Turned 25 last January, 3-1-4 and +3 in 6 games at the WC's.

12-27-39 in 45 games in the Swiss league. By comparison, Metropilit was 15-38-53 in 47 games and led the league in scoring, so those are impressive numbers for a defenseman. I wonder if he is targeted to start NHL or AHL. Swiss A is a very strong league. Streit at 27 put up 14-29-43 in 44 games.

Sounds like he is in the Weber/Streit mold as a puck mover and PP guy, RH shot.

He scored, was +2 and led the team with 21:14 against the US

hototogisu 05-13-2011 08:40 AM

Swiss fans seem to think he's pretty good...pulled some quotes from the topic on the FA board:

And TBH, it's not that big of a surprise.

He is definitely the most ready D of his ageclass (86) or younger in the NLA, and when looking at his recent play (including NT) he has probably developed into the best swiss D still playing on the old continent.

He's got spanish roots, so could build a latino-duo with Sbisa in Anaheim. He's on the smaller side (5.11), but solid frame (194lbs), isn't the most physical guy around, but his workethic in critical parts of the D zone like the corners and in the crease is good. protects himself pretty well. has developed a nice offensive touch over the years.

He's just a nice combination of puckskills, skating, hockey I.Q. and workethic, not unlike Streit's profile, though he's still a notch below Streit (when he left Switzerland) skillwise and in the all around game.

So he probably would need some adjustment time, bulking up a bit. But I do think, he got a good chance to make the NHL eventually

But when he pinches (which he does well) and skates around behind the net, he generally gets a half decent shot off from a tight angle and will occasionally score from it as he seems to surprise the goalie. He's not too bad in his own end but not the strongest. Occasionally gets caught too far up the ice but his speed can get him back. I'd be interested to see him on an NHL team - in the right situation I think he could do well. Probably only top 4 at best with a good amount of PP time.

He's been one of the best defenders in his own end here in Switzerland for a couple of seasons now. He can log big minutes, can rush the puck and can hit. One of the most complete defenders we have. So yes, I'd say he can play D.
But then again, Switzerland isn't the NHL.

coolasprICE 05-13-2011 08:42 AM

I hope we are not paying him a nickel over 60K

Dutchy 05-13-2011 08:43 AM

There's no way he starts the season with the big club. With Emelin coming over, there won't be any room, barring injuries.

Habs 4 Life 05-13-2011 08:43 AM

Maybe down the road he will be partner's with le jeune Veber on the blue line?:sarcasm:

Only reason I ask is the Habs have that little habit of playing Swiss D up front.
