In a surprise if not shocking move sources tell Sportsnet the #RedWings will announce retirement of D Brian Rafalski as early as this week.
Opens up six million dollars in cap space for the Wings this summer.

And opens up what has been an absolutely horrid spot on D for the past 2 seasons.

Make no mistake, he was phenomenal during the 2008 cup run.... But Since that season, he has been absolutely horrible for a guy expected to be a #2 and making 6.5 a season.

That was his swan song.. He went down hill the minute the season resumed.

One has to wonder if this surprise loss prompts the Wings to beg Lidstrom to play one more year. If Detroit were to lose both Rafalski and Lidstrom to retirement, they'd be paper-thin on the blueline.

the surprise ek was talkin about?

he couldnt of been right, could he?

He was right on a couple of signings last off-season too.

I didn't mind Rafalski's time in Detroit(although he couldn't keep the puck in on the PP, like Schnieder) and he will be missed.

I'm kinda surprised actually. Thought he had at least another year.

JUICEY* 05-23-2011 04:40 PM

Although he was bad defensively, the Wings won't be able to replace his offense, at least this year.

He was injured, but prorated over 82 games he put up 62 points.

He also put up more even strength points than Lidstrom in almost 20 less games. Rafalski lead the team in even strength points for defensemen. Actually, it is kind of alarming that Lidstrom only had 23 points at even strength.

You really think that Eklund just randomly came up with a rumor that Rafalski was going to retire? Chances are he had sources close to the situation for this rumor.

bullocks 05-23-2011 05:01 PM

Dreger confirms. Crazy.

dredeye 05-23-2011 05:04 PM

Wow the wings are gonna look crazy different next year.

This is either an oppurtunity for Detriot to bring in a new top defenseman or a body blow if they also lose both him and Lidstrom and are left needing to remake the defense. What's the latest on Lidstrom's intentions?

gotmonte 05-23-2011 05:06 PM

wouldnt this be more in line to AROUND THE NHL forum or THE TEAMS FORUM?

He also called the Kovalchuk 17-year contract. Gotta give him credit where credit's due

True but they'd have plenty of cap space to address it, although there will definitely be no Lidstrom in FA. Maybe they would add Pitkanen and Jovo?

BigHabs 05-23-2011 05:10 PM

Whats this mean for the defense:

Stuart Kronwall
Kindl ???
??? ???

This is assuming Lidstrom retires as well.

Reports earlier were that Ericsson turned down a contract from the Red Wings, people were stating he thought he could get more on the open market.

There will be options this summer just a bit more 30 year aged guys though.

Jovanovski
Montador
Hejda
Huskins
McCabe
Hamrlik
Hannan
Kaberle
Brewer

Pitkanen - younger
Weber - younger - offersheet
Bieksa - younger
Ehrhoff - younger
Wisniewski - younger
White
Bogosian - younger - offersheet (or trade)

Shanny 05-23-2011 05:31 PM

Sergei Gonchar for a 2nd and a prospect?

...could easily see him putting up a 50+ point season in Detroit.

You don't think He Who Is Abused By Forwards [Jonathan Ericsson] is the answer? lol
