The Rights To Brad Richards

It would be stupid for Dallas just to let him go and get nothing, we have seen in the past many times players rights who are coming UFA in a matter of months/weeks being traded.

If Dallas was to do this, what could they get back?

Perhaps something like this...

3rd round pick + conditional* 1st in 2012

*condition is if Richards signs with the team the rights were traded to, they get that teams first rounder in 2012 in addition to the 3rd rounder.

Is that too much? too little?

Thoughts?

I'd be happy with a 3rd thats a 2nd if he signs with the team

Bubba88 06-02-2011 03:57 PM

I see it

4th Round Pick - if he signs a 1st Round pick will be added

Teams can offer whatever they want, Richards decides where he wants his rights traded.

digdug41982 06-02-2011 04:00 PM

Well, Philly got a 3rd from Pittsburgh for Hamhuis' rights, so you have to figure at least that, possibly as high as a 2nd.

Bubba88 06-02-2011 04:01 PM

don't forget that Richards has a NMC and has to agree to a trade

Kamal007 06-02-2011 04:02 PM

lol @ first round pick. No one will give a first round pick. The highest any team would give is a 2nd, if even that.

I think if he cared about Dallas like he said, he'd accept a trade to whoever came in with the highest offer, even it made no sense for him as a FA.

One would hope that he wouldnt stick it to the stars and refuse to be traded to a team out of spite. Theres really no downside for him. He could be traded to any team in the league and all hes gotta do is report, let the team try to sell itself to him and do whatever he wants on the 1st.

MetalGodAOD* 06-02-2011 04:04 PM

NYR can't offer a 2011 2nd, so I'd imagine if they did it'd be a 3rd that turns to a 2012 2nd if he signs.

Bubba88 06-02-2011 04:05 PM

yeah, but I doubt Richards cares. He will leave the stars and he already knows where he wants to play.

No?

Forgot about the rights of Timonen/Hartnell from Nashville to Philly I guess.

:shakehead

2 players.

Ketzlaf 06-02-2011 04:12 PM

His rights are worth nothing. Richards will test the market. LOL at a team wasting picks on him. He will be the most sought after player, he won't limit himself to a single team.

Chaos 06-02-2011 04:14 PM

Yeah we aren't getting a 1st(although of course that would be great). I would say a 2nd is the absolute highest we'd get, but I think that is even a stretch. Maybe a 3rd that turns into a 2nd if he signs. Thats probably the best we'll be able to do at this point.

Fleuryoutside29 06-02-2011 04:15 PM

I think they're best option is to find a contender that needs a center, such as the caps, for a second round pick. This way they can get something for him. Plus they might be able to make the trade conditional, so if the Caps make it to the finals(probably not going to happen) they'll get a first round pick instead of a second round pick

I would say that Timonen and Hartnell have much more value than Richards, especially with the kind of season Timonen came off.

GordieHoweHatTrick 06-02-2011 04:20 PM

This year's 4th rounder with a conditional 2nd next year if he re-signs.

zeus3007* 06-02-2011 04:39 PM

I would think that if any team REALLY wants him, they would be willing to give up a conditional 2nd (first if he signs long term).

I would disagree.

JedYzerman 06-02-2011 04:50 PM

the point being of all this...

Richards is not going to sign with a team to which he doesn't want to go. The only "rumors" I have heard have been, back to Tampa, Rangers, and Carolina. I have heard the Tampa one numerous times, but given the Lightnings cap issues this year it might be hard for them to take him. Unless he is willing to take a pay cut to play with his old team, which he just might do.

traded the 3rd at the deadline for McCabe. Richards controls where he goes so Dallas is screwed. 5th rounder and Erik Christensen, take it or leave it. Leave it and Rangers sign him July 1st whatev

leafmon 06-02-2011 05:03 PM

Just how many more people would Richards put in the seats in Carolina? Yeah I thought so .

Tampa won't be a real option either with the guys they have to sign. Sub 500 dollar season tickets can only get you so many stars.

It's LA,Tor or the Rangers IMO.

If it is the Rangers will they be able to make the cap moves required (trades ,buyouts ect) before July 1 ? If not why trade for the rights?

Considering that his contract expires on July 1st, I doubt he's too worried about enforcing the NMC to control who owns his rights for the matter of 2-3 weeks.

Rainman2408 06-02-2011 07:27 PM

Personally I think it would be a total waste of assets to offer anything for his rights. NO WAY in hell he doesn't test the Free agent market anyway no matter what. Why would he sign before then anyway knowing that he is the cream of the crop this year. That aside if he really wants to stay in Dallas as he has said I can see him dragging it out for a while this summer just to see if the ownership issue gets resolved in dallas later in July as it's suppose to be getting close.

Smarter just to keep your assets and start negotiating on July 1st like everyone else cause like I said IMO he won't sign before July 1st anyway
