Flyers ACQUIRE Bryzgalov's rights from PHX for Clackson, '12 3rd, futures

SlavaMalamud Slava Malamud
Sport-Express reports: Bryzgalov NOT talking to SKA at this moment, is looking at Philly, TBL and Washington. No further details.

SlavaMalamud Slava Malamud
Correction: Sport-Express report mentions Toronto, not TB. "Toronto, Philly favored in Bryz sweepstakes, but Wash in it, too." Fascinating

Not sure how much of a source Sport Express is but it's something I guess.

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have acquired the rights to goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov (breez-GAH-lahf, IHL-yah) from the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for LW Matt Clackson, the Flyers’ 3rd round draft choice in 2012 and a conditional draft choice, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.

Bryzgalov, 30 (6/22/80), appeared in 68 games for the Coyotes last season, his fourth with the club. He posted a 36-20-10 record, a 2.48 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage while recording seven shutouts. He was also a runner-up for the Vezina Trophy following the 2009-10 season. Bryzgalov was acquired by Phoenix off waivers from the Anaheim Ducks on November 17, 2007.

It's a good source for Russian players, I seem to remember.
I'm not thrilled by this, I still prefer Vokoun.

Fenza 06-07-2011 11:17 AM

I prefer Vokoun too. And why is Bryz meeting with Washington? They're set with goalies.

dookie88 06-07-2011 11:17 AM

Good news if true, altough I can't really imagine that Washington is in it.
They have 3 (!) potential #1 goaltender and Neuvirth seemed ready and wasn't a problem in the playoffs.

The more I think about it the more Toronto looks like a hard competitor in the Bryz-sweepstakes. Don't they have tons of cap-room?

GoneFullHextall 06-07-2011 11:17 AM

they Flyers will be favored until Holmgren throws an insulting low offer at Bryzgalov or Vokoun and refuses to go higher

lancer247 06-07-2011 11:23 AM

Yes, because the Flyers are a notoriously cheap team.

SeanL44 06-07-2011 11:28 AM

Why does it seem like it's always Flyers vs Leafs in free agency?

I dont trust Holmgren.

I'd be thrilled with either Bryz or Vokoun.

Bryz hasn't been that great in the playoffs but a change of scenery could definitely help out. Plus, he's younger than Vokoun and a million times better than what we have right now.

Varlamov could be shopped or go to the KHL...

Quote:

Semyon Varlamov is a RFA and the Capitals could use his upside as part of a trade this season. The Caps have 2 other young goalies in Michal Neuvirth and Braden Holtby. Varlamov could be number 1 goalie in the NHL, but he has had injury issues in the past. Hes said hed like to stay in Washington, his agent has said that KHL teams are interested.

There are a lot of areas I don't trust Holmgren, but when it comes to overpaying players, I'm fully confident he'll get the job done.

when it comes to the goaltending position I am not so sure. We will see.

IMO most likely scenerio if Bryzgalov lands on the Flyers roster is if Carter gets moved. I think a three way type deal is brewing if the Flyers choose to pursue Bryzgalov. I know Columbus seeks a center badly as well as Toronto obviously. Columbus is willing to part with the 8th pick overall and right winger Jake Voracek.

Again..as I've said..last year Holmgren undershot with the goaltending and hence shot himself in the foot and this year he could possibly overshoot if he goes after Bryzgalov but I do think Snider gave Holmgren his marching orders to an extent to get a bonafide goalie and Brygalov is the main one on the market that fits the bill. Vokoun for some reason doesn't seem likely to come here and Thomas is also a stretch although he could be had...that is unless he wins the cup and his premium goes up even more.

He did a pretty good job of it with Leighton.

Terence Peterman 06-07-2011 11:44 AM

Vokoun still makes more sense.

It is irrational to discount the irrational (Holmgren)......

RIPRichardsCarter 06-07-2011 11:48 AM

Overrated and we (hopefully) will not overpay.

JLHockeyKnight 06-07-2011 11:51 AM

Well, if Bryzgalov goes to Toronto, he'd keep up with his current career pace of "never winning anything."

Heh, first thing that came to my mind as well. I do think TV is a better consolation prize than Beezer was though.

I'll jump for joy if either signs with Philly. I really think some of you are seriously overlooking Bryz due to the bad series vs Detroit, and the fact that he's out west and maybe not as familiar to you.

The guy is the reason the Yotes have been to the playoffs in the first place.

phillyfanatic 06-07-2011 02:06 PM

This is GREAT news!!! This sounds like Bryz is not going to the highest bidder, but rather is looking at places he "wants to go". TO me, the goalie market is VERY limited. Philly is the obvious, Washington is a maybe, Florida if Vokoun leaves, Phoenix if Bryz leaves, Colorado, Columbus, Tampa if Roloson leaves, Edmonton and the Isles.

Based on those teams and situations, we should be able to land a very good goalie this year. Philly is the best place to play with the best chance at a cup. I was worried Bryz was going highest bidder and was a LOCK for Colorado with their cap space.

Not truly. Varly is looking like he might be a new DiPietro with injuries, especially since his fairly flamboyant goaltending style routinely has him doing stressful things to his body. I doubt they have faith in Holtby just yet, but I wouldn't be shocked to see them part with Varly, acquire Bryz, and have Neuvirth as backup.

JDinkalage Morgoone 06-07-2011 03:47 PM

I would be absolutely thrilled with Bryz or Vokoun. It's truly a blessing that we're linked to both of these guys after the fiasco that was last year.

Kitten Mittons 06-07-2011 03:50 PM

Stupid question but ... can you guys afford it? You would need to lose a player to sign him, no? Who will be the one to go? Does Holmgren have the huevos to trade Versteeg?

ilovetheflyers8 06-07-2011 03:51 PM

never mind

To Davidhye. If the cap goes up 2.8 million the team can get 4.5-5 million free for a goalie though the team would be pretty close to the cap. I'd rather we went with Vokoun, so Bob if he is able to can become the number one in a few years. If we sign Bryzgalov I feel like it's probably going to be a around a 5 year deal.
