nooooooooooooo

hatterson 06-22-2011 10:16 AM

Weren't they "close" at the beginning of the SCF too?

Either way, if that $7M reported number is near accurate that's not a bad deal at all. I'm not one who believes Stamkos is the kind of dynamic player who can simply score no matter who plays with him (ala Crosby and Ovechkin), but you don't score 96 goals in 2 seasons without having a boatload of skill.

shortfuze 06-22-2011 10:17 AM

Good. Now I don't have to listen to people talk about certain teams sending him an offer sheet.

And I'm a leafs fan.

I think 7 mill is too much for him, 6.5 mill is fair but i am pretty sure he will get 7 mill.

I think Martin st. Louis played a big part of that.

7 mil for the best scorer in the NHL is too much?

tampa takes that and runs

I think for 7 mill you should be able to play defense as well. He is a good player, i suppose 7 mill may a bit to much now but in 2-3 years that might be a bargain

Why would anyone think otherwise?

Give your head a shake.

He's a top 10 player in the league. Teams would easily pay $8-$9m for him.

Not if your name is Jonathan Cheechoo and have Joe Thorton feeding you the puck.
:sarcasm:

Crede777 06-22-2011 10:32 AM

Good, I was beginning to think he was going to go somewhere else just like Zach Parise and Shea Weber.

I'm just kidding.

Stamkos can play D, he is just generally asked to be all out attack, being our top goalscorer/number 1 centre, suprising i know:sarcasm:

Ten88Nineteen 06-22-2011 10:46 AM

Stamkos is actually surprisingly good defensively when he needs to be. I mean, he's light years ahead of Ovi on that front already, and yet that's apparently not a problem with that contract. =P

Snipeshow 06-22-2011 10:48 AM

He's just a product of Martin St. Louis.

22g 60pts without him.

True. I'm hoping for a sign and trade just for the cap relief.

I'm curious as to how you decided 7M is too much but 6.5M is fair. How far off the 6.5M did the Stamkos camp have to demand before you decided it was too much??

Nash is 8M and i'd take Stamkos over him. Staal Gaborik heatley gomes .... all 8M or so guys. I still take Stamkos. Vinny Vanek, iginla spezza all over 7M. Still Stamkos.

There's only a handfull of guys I think you'd build around ahead of or instead of Stamkos. Toews (6.3M) Crosby (8.7M) & OV (9.5M). If Toews wanted more, he would have gotten more I bet. Good ole Winnipeg boy taking one for the windy ciy!!!

IMO, Stamkos could likely write his won ticket. It's up to him whether to take a cap friendly 7M long-term deal or test the market and take what he can get....

TehDoak 06-22-2011 11:19 AM

Prediction: 8.5

deckercky 06-22-2011 11:29 AM

The thing about Stamkos is that as much as he's a product of St. Louis, St. Louis is benefiting from a great trigger man. But Stamkos is still young and he'll only get better. I'm sure Yzerman and Boucher will develop a strong 2-way game for him in the coming years, but 7M is a bargain for a perennial Rocket Richard contender.

Ishdul 06-22-2011 11:38 AM

He's worth way more than 7 million. He's been one of the top 5 players over the last 2 years and he's 21. If he never gets any better he's still going to be worth way more than 7 million a year.

Shoalzie 06-22-2011 11:39 AM

Whatever he gets, he's worth it....

deckercky 06-22-2011 11:44 AM

I wonder if they do 2-3 years at 7 million, rather than a longer contract. Stamkos gives up less potential value at that point (if he performs at this level for 3 more years, he'll be a lot more valuable to say nothing of him improving), but it's also less of a gamble for Yzerman. Stamkos is still an RFA at the end, so they can figure things out then.
