Flyers could survive without any more moves

This is WITHOUT the bonus cushion, in case all of the players perform above expectations, and take your pick if you want Shelley or (resigned) Carcillo (or a 7th D) as the sit-out:

FORWARDS (13)
James Van Riemsdyk ($1,654,166) Claude Giroux ($3,750,000) Jakub Voracek ($2,500,000)
Scott Hartnell ($4,200,000) Daniel Briere ($6,500,000) Ville Leino ($3,500,000)
Kris Versteeg ($3,083,333) Brayden Schenn ($3,110,000) Wayne Simmonds ($1,500,000)
Darroll Powe ($900,000) Blair Betts ($700,000) Andreas Nodl ($1,050,000)
Jody Shelley ($1,100,000)

Braydon Coburn ($3,200,000) Kimmo Timonen ($6,333,333)
Andrej Meszaros ($4,000,000) Sean O'Donnell ($1,200,000)

GOALTENDERS (2)
Ilya Bryzgalov ($5,666,667)
Sergei Bobrovsky ($1,750,000)

CAP PAYROLL $64,056,428
BONUSES $3,815,000
CAP SPACE $243,572

RJ8812 06-23-2011 11:19 PM

carcillo?

he's gone

plus, we need a 7th defenseman

flyersfan187 06-23-2011 11:20 PM

I'd rather have Versteeg than Leino

RIPRichardsCarter 06-23-2011 11:20 PM

Replace Carter with Sestito and O'Donnell with 2 players from the AHL and yeah, that's pretty much our team with potential of Powe and Betts changing.

Today's events are making the need to get a Stamkos deal done all the more important. There are no less than 4 teams considering a run at Stamkos...The Rangers, Leafs, Sabres and Flyers head the pack.

On the Flyers...

I am told they are defintely considering making a run at Brad Richards. And I do believe the Flyers will still deal Versteeg...and likely to Florida..

Its Eklund so who knows maybe he can do it more then once...:sarcasm::sarcasm:

GKJ 06-23-2011 11:26 PM

There will be more moves though.

Replace Carcillo with Bartulis then. Still more than enough cap room.

Being generous is a good thing, it just further displays my point here.

I know, I'm just pointing out they could ice all the players they have now without cap issues.

Leino will get more then 3M on open market with this UFA forward group.

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $61,531,428; BONUSES: $3,815,000
CAP SPACE (20-man roster): $1,518,572

This would be more realistic with no more addiitional trades/etc

Problem I see with this roster

- Briere's D is not good for a C
- Your hoping that Schenn is ready to play in NHL
- Your wingers are all streaky players. Guys can play rod hot or ice cold (Especially Steeger)
- How will Giroux/JVR handle going up against teams shutdown lines/D? How will they pick up slack defensively for Richards and Carter?
- An injury to Giroux or Pronger is disaster for Flyers

All i keep hearing is stamkos. Are we seriously pursuing him?

Sadly, a pipe dream.

GKJ 06-24-2011 06:58 AM

Just because someone isn't a Flyers fan, doesn't mean they can't have their opinion.

might2mash 06-24-2011 07:11 AM

Also, no bonus cushion is necessary because there isn't one this year (last year of the CBA), not just so you can feel safer about whether guys will overachieve. I feel like Simmonds is going to want more, but neither Powe or Nodl will exceed $1M.

XS Chop 06-24-2011 07:13 AM

Two days ago our one and only goal for the team was winning a Cup, are we reduced to just hoping the team "survives" now? Granted, that's still a good team on paper and the most glaring weakness on the team is gone. Probably will need to get a bit more scoring back but the biggest problem I see with that lineup is Crosby, Malkin & Ovy. They'll tear any one of those lines to shreds.

Oh, okay, thanks did not know that!

Yeah I know I overpaid, would be better than underpaying to illustrate my point tho.

Briere has played C all of last years, playoffs, this years season, and playoffs.

For a third line role, I believe Schenn can definitely step into that right now.

This may be true.

Giroux did it well last year, put Briere's line first if you want, they all took turns being the top line last year (even Richards line)

An injury to Toews or Keith/Seabrook would be of equal ramifications, but they could still survive for awhile I reckon.

RE: Leino: take .25 off Nodl and Powe's contract (As the consensus is I overpaid them), and give Leino 3.5M then. Is that enough from a team who gave him a chance to be the player he is?

so was trading Richards

KaraLupin 06-24-2011 04:31 PM

Fixed the numbers regarding Powe,Nodl,Leino.

With the source who called all 3 of these moves in May, saying Versteeg will absolutely not be traded, and Ed Snider saying they will not be pursuing Richards or Stamkos, it's a possibility this is in fact the line-up they will try to work.

Looks like a decent team to me , but I really don't see how/why we need both Leino and Versteeg, with Simmonds and Voracek on the team, we need to lose one of them - there is no point trying to play Simmonds on the 4th line.

Get rid of one of those $3M+ deals and you've got more breathing room and space for a 7th d.

I guess they'll have to see if Leino will sign today, so they can deal Versteeg for a pick tonight or tomorrow morning if necessary.
