Quote:

• Through the first round of the 2011 playoffs, he was second on the Voltigeurs with eight points (3-5--8) in their four-game series win over Chicoutimi.

• After finishing in a tie for fourth in league scoring with 96 points (36-60--96) this season, Couturier was named the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Most Valuable Player, the Top 2011 Draft Prospect and selected a First-Team All-Star. He also finished second in the league with a plus-55 rating.

• He was the youngest and only draft-eligible player on Team Canada at the 2011 World Junior Hockey Championships, winning a silver medal. He also won a gold medal with Canada’s Under-18 team at the 2009 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament.

• Couturier led the QMJHL in scoring with 96 points (41-55--96) in 2009-10, becoming the first 17-year-old to lead the league in scoring since Sidney Crosby of the Rimouski Oceanic in 2004-05. He also led the team with a plus-62 rating while often playing against the opposition’s top players.

• His father, Sylvain, was drafted 65th overall by Los Angeles in 1986 and played 33 games with the Kings between 1988-89 and 1991-92 – he is now the General Manager of the Acadie-Bathurst Titans in the QMJHL.

• Couturier played for the Notre Dame Hounds in 2007-08, winning the Saskatchewan Midget AAA championship alongside Jaden Schwartz (14th overall by St. Louis in 2010) and Brandon Gormley (13th overall by Phoenix in 2010).

Couturier was born in Phoenix, Arizona[1] when his father Sylvain Couturier played for the IHL's Phoenix Roadrunners. The family moved to Bathurst, New Brunswick[2] at an early age, following his father's retirement and Couturier played minor hockey there.

SAINT JOHN - Sean Couturier's path to the NHL entry draft isn't a folksy tale of a tyke playing shinny on a frozen pond.

He was born in sunny Arizona and began honing his hockey skills in Germany.

The great frozen game wasn't king in the places Couturier lived for the first few years of his life. But he eventually moved to Bathurst, N.B., where hockey is part of the community's cultural fabric and a way to cope with harsh winters.

“I played my minor hockey there and I went to school there,'' said Sean. “That's where I consider myself from. It's a beautiful little city and it's always fun going back home.''

The reason Couturier calls Bathurst home is that his father, Sylvain, is the general manager of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Acadie-Bathurst Titan. The elder Couturier often winces while watching his players try to stop his son, a star centre with the Drummondville Voltigeurs.

The following is the conference call transcript with Flyers’ draft pick Sean Couturier, the 8th overall choice in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft tonight:

Q: On the chances of playing in the NHL next year

“For sure this summer I’ve got to work hard. My main goal is to make the NHL next year. Once I get to camp I’ll be prepared. It’s up to the GM and staff to decide. I can’t really control that.”

Q: Had the Flyers been in touch with you?

“Yeah, actually I met them for the first time last night. It was a pretty good meeting. They seemed to have a lot of interest, but anything can happen in the draft. But now that the draft is over, I’m really glad to be a part of the Philadelphia Flyers.”

Q: Who did you meet with?

“Pretty much the whole staff was there.”

Q: Did you have a team in mind?

“No, not really. I didn’t really have any favorite team or anything. I didn’t really know what to expect. So just going to Philadelphia, I’m really happy.”

Q: Who did you root for growing up?

“I grew up following the Montreal Canadiens, but I wasn’t really a die-hard fan or anything.”

i am dave 06-24-2011 07:21 PM

I do not have a problem with this at all.

Philadelphia Ducks 06-24-2011 07:22 PM

Much rather have had Hamilton, but solid pick either way.

RoyBoyCoy 06-24-2011 07:22 PM

Congrats guys, you've just won the draft. :shakehead

Giroux/Couturier/JVR/Voracek/Simmonds/Schenn

Be excited guys

ApeZilla 06-24-2011 07:23 PM

this is a great pick

What they said on versus is true, we were very fortunate to have him slip to number 8.

Coppy 06-24-2011 07:24 PM

We're kind of loaded with young offensive talent.... Was hoping this pick would be a defensemen. That said, consensus is that he had more potential than anyone else on the board.

GKJ 06-24-2011 07:25 PM

All these guys still can't play center...

I like the guy though, no matter who we took, it fills an organizational void.

Ih8theislanders 06-24-2011 07:25 PM

I am ****ing pissed about this.

That means you made a hell of a pick.

SeanL44 06-24-2011 07:25 PM

Not a bad pick at all. Just would've been happier with Dougie.

Kitten Mittons 06-24-2011 07:25 PM

He better learn how to play wing.

2Claude2Giroux 06-24-2011 07:25 PM

fantastic pick

Kangaroux 06-24-2011 07:25 PM

I am so happy about this pick. I really wanted a D-man, but when a player of his skill level falls into your lap, who cares about "needs". Giroux, Schenn, Couturier down the middle? THANK YOU.:handclap:

AwesomePanthers 06-24-2011 07:26 PM

STEAL! Congrats boys!

Agreed.

CS 06-24-2011 07:28 PM

1. Larsson
2. Landeskog
3. RNH
4. Hamilton
5. Couturier

That was my draft board for the Flyers.

I like it.

JVR21 06-24-2011 07:28 PM

 Appreciate this pick guys. He was the preseason #1, and he only dropped because he got injured in the middle of the season!

IrishSniper87 06-24-2011 07:28 PM

Sick pick.

Schenn and Couturier. Nice.

Mgkibbles 06-24-2011 07:28 PM

Giroux-Schenn-Courturier as our top 3 centers going forward. Daddy like :naughty:

orange is better 06-24-2011 07:29 PM

guys who are complaining about picking couturier over hamiton.

guess what, this pick is an absolute STEAL.

couturier is going to be a bigger impact player at center than hamilton will be at defense.

GKJ 06-24-2011 07:30 PM

I'm just worried now that we won't get a good enough defenseman out of this draft.

CS 06-24-2011 07:30 PM

We definitely went BPA without question. We will likely push toward defense in future years.

JVR21 06-24-2011 07:30 PM

He looks like a perfect fit in that jersey.

Unstable 06-24-2011 07:33 PM

So we have a future replacement for Danny rather than Pronger.

I'm OK with that.

MiamiScreamingEagles 06-24-2011 07:34 PM

Simon Nolet (scout) also was key in drafting Simon Gagne.

OriginJM 06-24-2011 07:36 PM

Thinking of this:

Giroux/Couturier/JVR/Voracek/Simmonds/Schenn

Holy ****, what a mother****ing young powerhouse.
