Round 5: Pick #134 (Shane McColgan, RW)

Player: Shane McColgan

POSITION: RIGHT WING
SHOOTS: RIGHT
HEIGHT: 5' 8" WEIGHT: 165
BORN: JANUARY 1, 1993
HOMETOWN: MANHATTAN BEACH, CA
BORN IN: TORRACE, CA, USA
DRAFTED: NYR (5TH ROUND / 134TH OVERALL)

Stats:

2010-2011 Kelowna WHL67 21G 45A 66P 62PIM

Notable Reports:

(thescoutingreport.com)

The diminutive McColgan has been very effective in two Western Hockey League seasons, scoring at nearly a point per game pace. McColgan sees the ice well, has great hands, and definitely isn’t afraid to go to the dirty areas. The big question on everyone’s mind is whether or not he will be able to play his style at the pro level. The 5-9 McColgan hasn’t let his size hold him back yet, as he has proven a willingness to battle with any player in the WHL while generally staying healthy. If he can get his game to the next level, he could be a big draft day steal.

Shane Mccolgan

any info on him??

McDonagh 06-25-2011 01:16 PM

McColgan, listed at 5'8. I don't know anything else.

ECL 06-25-2011 01:17 PM

McColgan. Another mighty mite. Another big-time faller.

People thought he was a top 3 pick about a year and a half ago. Never really improved much this year.

THing that is the best about him? He plays a lot like Callahan at times and projects to be quite a similar player if he puts it together.

Fits the mold, like it.

Another potential steal. I like this.

RGY 06-25-2011 01:19 PM

LOL

NYR Viper 06-25-2011 01:19 PM

he's 5'8" 165lbs

McDonagh 06-25-2011 01:20 PM

69 points in his 16/17 year old season in the WHL is very impressive. Too bad he didn't improve too much on that this year.

ecemleafs 06-25-2011 01:20 PM

rangers sending the team to sochi in 2014 and the olympics in 2018.

coolbean04 06-25-2011 01:21 PM

He seemed to have a down year from his 1st full year. I can definitely see him having a C. Thomas explosion and get an 80+ point season next year.

good for us, if he improved then he'd be drafted a lot higher. Let him breakout now that he belongs to us :)

bobbop 06-25-2011 01:23 PM

He's from Southern California and I remember last year there was talk he would be a first rounder this year. Looks like no progression in regular season but very nice playoffs.

Bluenote will be happy about this pick.

I would not have been happy taking him in the 3rd or 4th, but in the 5th? Hell yeah. This kid can be a legitimate steal. I like this better than the St. Croix pick, since I think McColgan has a much more realistic shot at making the NHL with his game.

Blueblood 2 06-25-2011 01:23 PM

We sure have a thing lately for the Mc's! LOL!!

Thanks for the helpful insight Johnathan.

You are helping relieve some of the stresses not only for me but around the whole board.

RGY 06-25-2011 01:26 PM

Maybe it was just one bad season for him.

But yes I do like this pick. This could be one of those steals.

So what's our list of Americans at now? LOL

Callahan
Dubinsky
Stepan
McDonagh
Kreider
Bourque
Miller
Fogarty
McColgan

Lundqvist=Vezina 06-25-2011 01:27 PM

He played on my brother's baseball and hockey teams when they were younger and his dad owns a sports bar that I frequent here in town. I knew he was going to get drafted but it's made worlds collide when I saw he got drafted by us.

nyr2k2 06-25-2011 01:27 PM

Hmm. Tiny but skilled. Worth a gamble in this round.

This is a guy people should be pretty happy with in the 5th. Projected to be a top 5 (3?) pick a year and a half ago. Fell a lot this year since he just never really got much better. Dude has one of the highest compete levels of anyone in the draft and plays like he's 6'5 and 230 pounds. True reckless abandon at times. I worry about his health as a little guy, but as I said -- we've seen Callahan do it and McColgan reminds a lot of people of Callahan as a kid in juniors (same **** -- too small to play his game, limited offensive upside, etc. etc.).

In 5 years, we might look back on him as the best player in our draft class. We might also just think he's been a fun AHLer that provides energy.

This will be a fun guy to watch develop.
