The Realignment Thread: Stars to "Division B"

Figured we needed a thread for this and since no one has brought it up...bam.

Clearly, we're going to be one of the ones affected by it so why not talk about it at length.

Bettman's proposal is..
Four time-zoned based divisions, two with eight teams, two with seven. They would be called the Pacific, Midwest, East, and South.

So your thoughts on where we end up or just where you want us to end up?

MetalGodAOD 06-25-2011 03:23 PM

Obviously Midwest, which would probably be the 8 team division for the West.

I really dislike this proposal due to uneven distribution. However the original idea called for the top 4 teams in every division to make the playoffs or something. If they just stick with top 8 of the Conference it'll be fine. But top 4 from division when some divisions have 8 and some have 7 isn't right.

Cin 06-25-2011 03:41 PM

Hopefully we start playing teams closer to our time zone.

I will say this being here in Austin watching Texas play. If the league switches to a divisional style that has us playing within our division each teams 6 times a year I won't be a fan and nobody else will be either. It's frustrating as hell having to watch us play Houston like 8 times a year. Seeing the same players every game is ******. I do realize it's the A, just hoping to shed some light on divisional play with larger divisions. It blows.

Stars99Lobo37 06-25-2011 03:44 PM

Well we already play our division 6 times. It's way better than the 8 times a year they had coming out of the lock out.

Am hoping we somehow get to be in the South, but I can't see it coming true. Always wished we were in a division with Carolina, Tampa, Florida, and Nashville but just can't see it coming true.

Will be interesting to see where Phoenix moves to (am convinced it's going to happen next summer). Houston, Seattle, Kansas City...then there's Quebec out there looming too.

Clearly this set up Gary's proposing is set up for expansion to 32.

Honestly will be happy as long as we're out of the Pacific and not having to play divisional games in California.

DaStars99 06-25-2011 09:14 PM

I want to see us in a division with Chicago, Detroit, St Louis, and so on I don't think the Detroit part will fan out but anything that gets us ouut of the pacific is a success. I still wouldnt mind if they somehow got the teams like Toronto we played in the mid 90s but that isn't going to happen

Stars99Lobo37 06-25-2011 09:40 PM

New article on it...

While the league has not determined exactly what will happen, and will spend the next several months discussing the options, word around the NHL draft on the weekend was there could be one 16-team conference with two eight-team divisions and one 14-team conference with two seven-team divisions. Or the conferences could each have an eight-team division and a seven-team division.

The Eastern Conference will probably be the larger one, since there are three current Western Conference teams that want to move east when Winnipeg moves west from the Southeastern Division....

.....The Blue Jackets are pushing the proposal for one 16-team conference and one 14-team one in hopes of moving east.....

piqued 06-25-2011 09:50 PM

Unbalanced conferences are a much bigger problem than unbalanced divisions. 7.1% chance in the West vs. 6.3% in the East of making the Finals.

Modo 06-25-2011 09:59 PM

Ugh, please don't turn this into the MLB, Gary....even they're learning from their mistakes and want equal leagues again.

15 on each side, end of story!

Bennrocks 06-26-2011 02:48 PM

This new alignment plan sounds like its begging for a 2 team expansion.... Houston/QC?

Stars99Lobo37 06-26-2011 03:30 PM

Depending on the Coyotes situation (and I fully believe they won't be here for the 2012-13 season), I think the expansion will come to Seattle, Kansas City, or Houston before they go back to Quebec City. I don't want to read much into the pre-season game in Houston but wouldn't shock me if they're testing how it is taken down there (can't hurt with the Aeros down there as well). Maybe it's just me hoping Houston gets a team for a built in rival and closer road games but eh, I think it'd be a good market.

If Phoenix gets moved to one of those cities, and then the two expansion teams come in, I'm going to guess (or at least hope) it looks like...

Western Conference:
MIDWEST
Dallas, Winnipeg, St. Louis, Minnesota, Nashville, Chicago, Houston, Kansas City
PACIFIC
San Jose, Los Angeles, Anaheim, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Colorado, Seattle

Eastern Conference:
SOUTH
Detroit, Columbus, Carolina, Tampa Bay, Florida, Washington, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh
EAST
Montreal, Buffalo, Boston, Toronto, Ottawa, New York, New York, New Jersey

If it ends up being Quebec getting a team...I have no idea how they're going to work the Detroit/Columbus situation.

piqued 06-26-2011 03:47 PM

I think we're getting ahead of ourselves with expansion. Phoenix potentially moving doesn't change much.

Pacific: (7)
Vancouver
Calgary
Edmonton
San Jose
Anaheim
Los Angeles
Colorado

Central: (8)
Winnipeg
Minnesota
Chicago
Detroit
St. Louis
Nashville
Dallas
Houston or KC

--------------

Southeast: (7)
Columbus
Pittsburgh
Philadelphia
Washington
Carolina
Tampa Bay
Florida

Northeast: (8)
Toronto
Ottawa
Montreal
Boston
Buffalo
Rangers
Islanders
Devils

Division winners get the top 2 seeds. Everything beyond that just goes by points. So it doesn't matter that they're unbalanced. And if Phoenix stays you just make the Pacific the one with 8 teams, or move Colorado to the Central.

God, I'm torn on NHL hockey coming to Houston. I don't want ticket prices to go up, but I'd love a team down here...

From a Dallas POV, it would be great, but I'm not sure from a Houstonian POV.

Separating Chicago and Detroit? Them's fighting words....

I agree with Modo on sticking to the 15/conference with 6 divisions and the re-alignment as such:

Winnipeg ---> NorthWest
Colorado/Vancouver ----> Pacific
Nashville ----> South East
Dallas ----> Central

Easy fix.

bhetz23 06-26-2011 07:28 PM

Well, the Rockets suck, so an NHL team in Houston would give them something else to cheer for. Besides, the nation's 4th largest city should have a pro team in all sports.

As for realignment, as someone who works alot of overnight shifts, Overnight radio sucks. It helps to pass the night when the Stars,Rangers, and Mavericks play on the West coast, so Im in favor of playing in the Pacific Time Zone.

Just my .02

interesting, I would love for this to happen.

Kritter471 07-12-2011 07:07 PM

Detroit wants to go east because of the timezone thing, sf. Chicago being a central time zone thing means they'll be split up regardless.

Cin 07-13-2011 12:22 AM

Houston is very logical location for an expansion team. They already have tons of good hockey youth, lots of great rinks, and they already have an NHL ready stadium. Phoenix is gone after this next season anyways so I'm ready for a Houston team to hate.

Stars99Lobo37 09-20-2011 04:24 PM

Time to pop this one back up.

If Houston gets a team, I have no idea who I'd be cheering for. I'd stick with the Stars, but Houston would be pretty high up for me.

I'm thinking Minnesota moves into the Central, Nashville/Columbus to the Southeast, and Winnipeg to the Northwest. I'd prefer the Stars move, but it just seems unnecessary at this point. Central seems more in the northern part (St. Louis, Chicago, Detroit), and St. Paul is considerably closer to several of those cities. Nashville would be the farthest away, but they could easily shift to the Southeast.

But maybe Vancouver moves to the Pacific, Winnipeg to the Northwest, and then the Stars to the Central. Confusing, I know, but in the end (without any relocations) it looks like this:

Eastern Conference

Atlantic
Pittsburgh
New Jersey
New York R.
New York I.
Philadelphia

Northeast
Boston
Buffalo
Ottawa
Montreal
Toronto

Southeast
Carolina
Florida
Nashville
Tampa Bay
Washington

Western Conference

Central
Columbus
Dallas
Chicago
Detroit
St. Louis

Pacific
Phoenix
Los Angeles
Anaheim
San Jose
Vancouver

Northwest
Calgary
Edmonton
Winnipeg
Colorado
Minnesota

Thinking back, Minny stays in the NW (very close to Winnipeg, obviously), So Vancouver moves to the Pacific, Dallas to the Central, Winnipeg to the NW, and Nashville to the SE.

Not great, but I think if Phoenix relocates, I could come up with a better one.

tjcurrie 09-21-2011 10:56 AM

I like the idea of going back to four divisions with the top four in each making the playoffs. It's not a big deal at all that it's a little uneven with two having 8 and two having 7 teams. My only concern is who the divisions consist of. I want to see good rivalries brought back. I saw one proposal where we were in with Nashville, Carolina, and the FLA teams and that's garbage.

More and more NHL governors convinced DET will be moving to SE Div in Eastern Conference when realignment done in early December.

If DET goes to SE (East), it's plausible and possible WPG could take DET's place in Central Div (West). Realignment would be done.

Nothing firm yet on realignment, but DET has been good soldier in West for long time. WPG would be fine with Central as opposed to NW.

If that happened, DAL would be most unhappy. Stars want in Central Div. OK, that's all the realignment talk. Discuss amongst yourselves.

OK, I lied, one more on realignment. NHL not likely to create division with 1 CDN and 4 US teams, or vice versa. (No VAN-EDM-CGY-WPG-MIN)

Actually, on last tweet scratch vice versa. NHL won't put MIN in otherwise all CDN division. WPG said to be cool being in Central with 4 US.
Let's hope they don't take the easy way out.

Stars99Lobo37 10-12-2011 03:01 AM

Would be by far the worst case possible..

Lets hope to God that doesn't happen. We've been in this awful division for long enough, move us back where we belong.

The Wings have been promised a move to the East for many years.

You've got to somehow accommodate this, while also moving the Stars. I haven't seen an elegant solution for both yet that doesn't involve redrawing every division.
