2011-2012 Line Combinations

With the moves today, how do you guys see the Flames lines working out next season? How do you see Byron and Butler fitting into the lineup? Obviously we're going to see more moves/trades/signings still, but I just want to get an idea of what this team might look like come next season. Looking at CapGeek now, it looks like there isn't really room for Byron, especially if we want to see some young forwards step up from Abbotsford.

Stewie Griffin 06-25-2011 02:28 PM

FORWARDS
Alex Tanguay ($3.500m) / Mikael Backlund ($1.270m) / Jarome Iginla ($7.000m)
Curtis Glencross ($2.550m) / Olli Jokinen ($3.000m) / Rene Bourque ($3.333m)
Niklas Hagman ($3.000m) / Daymond Langkow ($4.500m) / David Moss ($1.300m)
Tim Jackman ($0.550m) / Matthew Stajan ($3.500m) / Tom Kostopoulos ($0.916m)
Stefan Meyer ($0.512m)
Possibly LTIR: Ivanans ($0.600m)

Forward lines are pretty much set, barring trades.

DEFENSEMEN
Jay Bouwmeester ($6.680m) / Mark Giordano ($4.020m)
Cory Sarich ($3.600m) / Chris Butler (RFA)
T.J. Brodie ($0.741m) / Brett Carson ($0.575m)
B. Mikkelson (RFA)

Eww.

GOALTENDERS
Miikka Kiprusoff ($5.833m) / Henrik Karlsson ($0.862m)

BUYOUTS: Nigel Dawes ($0.141m)

CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $6,312,501

RFAs to sign: Butler, Mikkelson

Northern Neighbour 06-25-2011 02:33 PM

I think Hagman gets waived or traded, thus opening up a spot on the 2nd line for Byron. Byron could be a good fit with Jokinen and Bourque, as he reportedly has very good skill and playmaking ability.

So you don't see Byron (or maybe one of Nemisz or Bouma) making the cut? Also, The Anton potentially re-signing would give our defense a huge boost; How much do you think Feaster is trying to sign him for?

This sounds a little too optimistic to me. Byron was still only an AHLer last season. I see him fitting into more of a bottom-six role if he does in fact make the roster out of camp.

The Fan960 claims The Anton will test free agency July 1, so if I were a betting man my bets would be on him not returning.

The Flames are set in the bottom six, so barring trade I don't see a kid making the team out of camp.

The club should give Byron every chance to succeed in a top-6 role. The club needs more playmakers upfront, and Byron fits the bill. If he struggles in a top-6 role, then send him down to the AHL or have him play on the 3rd or 4th lines.

Oh, I must have missed that. :(

I hope he chooses to re-sign here, but that doesn't sound good. But if you don't feel satisfied with the defense, there's a huge pile of cap-space to sign a UFA defenceman.

I'm interested to see how the D-pairings shake out. Does Gio slide into Regehr's spot? He's certainly the most logical choice at a glance. But I wonder if we see Sarich paired with Bouwmeester; after the Bouw-Staios experiment, I could see it. I think Feaster might look for another top-four defenceman to ease the pain of missing Regehr as well though.

I suppose that seems fair, but the top-six already seems crowded with Iginla, Tanguay, Bourque, and one of Glencross/Moss/Hagman on the wings.

flames123 06-25-2011 02:58 PM

As I see it either Lanks or Backlund will centre the top line. However, I do think Stajan will rebound this year.

Tanguay - Langkow - Iggy
Glenner - Jokinen - Bourque
Backlund - Stajan - Hagman
TK - Moss - Jackman
Ivanans

Bo - Gio
_____ - Sarich
Carsen - Butler

I think we need to take our CAP space and find a suitable replacement for Regehr. Butler and Carsen are both R D's so I would rather they don't play together but I think they might have to. Of the free agents on the market I think Scott Hannan at the right price would be a good pick up, I would not be apposed to targeting James Wisniewski or even Bieksa or Erhoff if they don't get locked up. I love Bieksa. I would have liked to see Babchuk in the picture but we need a top 4 defenseman and Anton is not that imo. He is a solid bottom pairing guy that can work the PP and provide offence.

I didn't know Butler played the right side, I just assumed he played on the left because he's left handed. I wouldn't mind Bieksa either tbh. And IMO The Anton is certainly top-four material. He has a cannon of a shot (and the PP will suffer a lot without it IMO), he's an extremely good shot-blocker, and plays strong positionally. Either way, it sounds like Anton is on his way out, unfortunately.

Even Hagman sucks, he is still better than Byron.

What make you think Byron deserves a shot on the second line? because dumbass Feaster traded for him? You are probably right.

My apologies I thought he was R handed for whatever reason. Him and Carsen would be an okay bottom pairing. If we could lock up both Babs and another top 4 D-man I wouldn't be apposed to it either.

Bo - Bieksa
Gio - Sarich
Butler - Babchuk

That would be a pretty scary defence imo. Good size, fair mobility and plenty of guys that can move the puck. Babs and Sarich's foot speed may be a bit of an issue but not as much now that Regehr is gone. Babs doesn't have the mobility to play top 4 mins.

Because Hagman has demonstrated very little since coming to Calgary and the team has enough shooters on the club. And what makes you think Byron doesn't deserve a shot?

From the scouting reports (that's all I can go on since I have never seen him play), Byron would give the team another playmaker and someone who could pass the puck. We've all criticized the team for not having enough of these players, and Feaster finally gets one in Byron.

Now, I don't like the Regehr deal at all and I'm not overly high on Byron, but he should he get a long look in the top-6. We all should see what he brings to the club before reserving judgment on whether he could contribute immediately and whether he's a top-6 forward. If he doesn't work out this year, then send him to Abbotsford or move him down to the bottom six.

That would be absolutely ideal, that D looks solid and well-rounded, but I get the feeling we see something more like:

Bouwmeester - Giordano
UFA defenceman - Sarich
Butler - Carson
Brodie

Grannys 06-25-2011 03:25 PM

I wouldtn mind picking up either Bieksa, Hejda or Montador. Except Bieksa will either resign with Nucks or get more money than the Flames can/should dish out.

whats our cap room look like right now?

Call me crazy, but if the Flames are trying to trend in a younger direction, I really don't mind the look of that defense. Bouw and Gio is a solid number one pairing, and Sarich can mentor Butler into a top-4 role. Brodie, Carson, and Mikkelson can fight it out for the last two spots. It doesn't look anywhere near as solid as it would if we still had Regehr, but it Butler develops how he is projected to, this could turn into something good.

And next year, we can resign Sarich for a much cheaper price to continue to do the same thing with some of our other young D that might come up (Negrin? Pelech?)

$7,566,667. That's with 4 defencemen and 13 forwards (and 2 goalies) under contract.

I'd rather have Ehrhoff over Bieksa, but I'd imagine the Canucks will re-sign him.

I'd be pretty happy if the Flames could sign one of those two to our top 4. Unfortunately I don't think either one of them reaches FA.

By all accounts, Ehrhoff's more about the money. Allegedly, he's already rejected a couple of contract offers by the Canucks and is looking to test FA. Could be wrong though. But if Ehrhoff does make it to July 1st, given the extremely weak UFA market, he could command as much 6M a year, which would likely be too rich for the Flames.

Snoil11 06-25-2011 04:01 PM

Feaster hopefully spares us Wisniewski. Ehrhoff, however, would be a hell of a signing, but would come at a higher cap-hit than Regehr.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that.

Wisniewski would be a great signing, though.

Feaster said there's more salary that he's trying to trade away, hopefully that includes Stajan. Wants more flexibility headed to July 1st.

jeremywilhelm 06-25-2011 05:07 PM

Andy Greene is a UFA I would target. He had a couple decent seasons under Brent in NJ. He could play top 4 with Sarich Gio and Bouwmeester.
