What are the chances that Burke signs another top 4 defenceman?

Assuming the players are willing to consider Toronto as a destination, would Burke sign them? I'm talking about Erhoff, Pitkanen, and Wisniewski.

Erza Scarlet 06-25-2011 03:26 PM

maybe a depth defencemen, no lebda

Stan Dupcomic 06-25-2011 03:27 PM

No I'm talking about a big name UFA to play with Phaneuf

then Aulie gets bumped down and Komi becomes 7th d or someone else gets traded

Kyle Doobas 06-25-2011 03:27 PM

Only way I see this happening is if either Schenn or Aulie is traded in a package for a #1 center.

Epictetus 06-25-2011 03:28 PM

Highly unlikely now.

Nasty Nazem 06-25-2011 03:34 PM

If we trade Gunnarson or Aulie in a package deal for a #1 center, then sure. Or if a miracle happens and someone is stupid enough to take Komisarek's contract.

PasDaSquini 06-25-2011 03:35 PM

Doubt it tbh. Liles was brought in to carry the load until gunner is ready/capable of fulfilling the role. I would not like to see Aulie/Schenn dumped down to the third pairing would crush the development of them plus they both are capable of top4 minutes.

100angryvikings 06-25-2011 03:36 PM

To spend big money on another d-man, Komi will have to be moved. Otherwise its just too much money on our back end. I actually like the look of our defence though. If Gunnarsson takes another step forward in his offensive ability, we should get enough back end production with him, Liles, and Phaneuf.

Stan Dupcomic 06-25-2011 03:38 PM

Is there a chance Komi gets sent to the minors so Leafs can use his cap space to sign Erhoff?

James Duthie 06-25-2011 03:38 PM

Unlikely, you have 8 defensemen that are able to play in the NHL

Phaneuf
Aulie
Schenn
Liles
Komisarek
Gunnarson
Lebda
Lashoff

Out of those 8 most likely Lebda is the one thats moving into the minors while Lashoff stays as the 7th defense men. The only possible way I see the Leafs acquiring more defensemen is if Schenn or Aulie are dealt in a deal for a number 1 C or Komisarek traded for cap relief.

Sadly there is no chance Komisarek can be sent down to the minors because Komisarek has a no movement clause, the only possibly way we get him off our backs is trading him to teams that have so much cap space like the Isles and Panthers and need money to reach the cap floor

Everlong 06-25-2011 03:41 PM

I hope not. Too much money on the back end as is.

No more expensive ufa defenseman signings unless we're a contender! Please!

bobbyflex 06-25-2011 03:42 PM

as much as i love Schenn, how about this: trade Schenn for a #1C and sign Bieksa to replace him

Nonis and Bieksa are tight too

Rare Jewel 06-25-2011 03:43 PM

I could see it, And I expect it.

Nearly 19 million in cap space left. Ehrhoff and Wisneiwski would be at the top of my list.

jaateloauto 06-25-2011 03:43 PM

Zero unless someone is moved.

Stan Dupcomic 06-25-2011 03:44 PM

Last year we thought our defence was set, and it turns out Burke was trying to sign Hamhuis and Martin.

LeafOfBread 06-25-2011 03:48 PM

If we sign Richards, none at all. If we don't, then maybe.

That's because he was trying to be a sneaky ****er and drive up the trade market for Kaberle.

Tie Domi Esquire 06-25-2011 03:50 PM

Other than a little interest I have in Wisniewski, not at all.

I don't see any team in the league offering a #1C for Schenn...

ForzaZuffa 06-25-2011 03:53 PM

Not happening unless a Dman like Komi, Gunnar, or Schenn are traded.

The addition of JM Liles addressed a need for a PMD and offensive dman, and it made the defense more costly in the process.

Granted, while Liles is going to help generate more offense I'm still wondering, who is going to help the team play better defense?

I don't think our D-core, in zone play is bad at all. What I think was their Achilles heel was the lack of support from forwards and the inability to move the puck out of the zone after gaining possession.

In short, I think our biggest problem was turnovers and not being able to get the puck to our speedy wingers who were encouraged to get up the ice for the break

Who knows, maybe the coaching will be better this year? Our defense was also pretty solid once we had a consistently good goalie in there (Reimer).
