Marc Staal vs. Andrej Mezsaros

Rangers fan coming in peace.

A Flyers fan friend of mine said the following:
1. Andrej Meszaros is the best defenseman on the team.
2. Andrej Mezsaros is better than Brent Burns.
3. Andrej Mezsaros is better than Marc Staal.

Lol. I wouldn't say that...

flyersfan187 06-27-2011 06:54 PM

I would put Pronger/Kimmo/Carle all above Mez. But he is a good D.

Your Flyers friend is wrong on all 3 counts.

BrindamoursNose 06-27-2011 06:55 PM

He played the best of any Flyers d-man last year, but he isn't actually the best.

We were debating the idea of Couterior over Hamilton based on need, and that in 2 years, there isn't a Flyer currently on the roster capable of a top-2 role, with Pronger at 40, Timonen off contract, Coburn not a top-2, Carle either gone or still with team but not a top 2, and Meszaros not a top-2.

It led into a discussion of how good Meszaros is, how he's better than Staal. I responded that top-2 defensemen don't get traded twice before age 25, most recently for a 2nd round pick and directed him to look at what Burns was just traded for, and he said he's better than Burns.

So, I figured I'd get some opinions from the Flyers base. We're all homers to an extent, but I do read some of your team's threads, and I did post Homer's Odyssey to a good response, so I wanted some of you guys' feedback.

He had a terrific first season for the Flyers and was named the team's best d-man in post-season voting. He was very relaxed and steady in his performance. With a healthy Pronger, he is the best dman. Timonen is as valuable as anyone on the team. Meszaros was recognized for winning the Barry Ashbee award in part because he was a new face who was successful.

Opus 06-27-2011 07:01 PM

I think it's disgusting that Andrej Meszaros didn't win the Norris this past season.

I feel he'll be a shoe-in for the trophy this upcoming season.

DrinkFightFlyers 06-27-2011 07:05 PM

I'd say he is the best that isn't named Pronger or Timonen. I don't think he is better than Burns or Staal, but I don't think the are that far off. I'd put them all in the same league.

The Flyers friend of yours is nuts.

1. Nope, he's still floating in the 3-5 area, depending on the night.
2. I'd say Burns is pretty far ahead offensively and a bit better defensively. Isn't as physical as Meszaros though.
3. I'd say Meszaros is a bit better offensively, but nowhere close to Staal's defensive potential. I'd take Staal now.

I'd say that Meszaros was well worth the 2nd round pick. I could see him topping out at a #2, which would be great. Part of the reason he failed in Tampa was because they expected him to come in and be their #1 as a 23 year old.

Your friend is silly.

Burns is a poor defender. He is a nightmare defensively. Makes very poor decisions. Very good offensive skills. Meszaros is defintely the better all around defenseman.

He's no more than a number 3 right now. Can't lead a top pairing

We made a little wager.

If Brayden Schenn scores 90 points in either 2011/12, 2012/13, or 2013/14, I owe 100 dollhairs. If he does not, he owes me 100 dollhairs.

Additionally, if he does not break 70 points in any of the 3 years, I get an additional 100 dollhairs. If he breaks 100 pts any of the 3 years, he gets an additional 100 dollhairs.

If Schenn is on the NHL roster within the first 15 games of the year, this year counts. If not, the bet starts next year and gets pushed back to 2012/13, 2013/14, or 2014/15.

Juicy Couturier* 06-27-2011 07:22 PM

Yes, we lost in the second round of the playoffs with a defenseman on our 3rd pairing better than Burns and Staal.

Burns is not that bad defensively. He's more valuable for his offensive puck moving abilities, but its not like you put him out there you just throw up a goal for the other team. Like I said, I think Staal, Burns, and Mez are all on the same level.

In my defense, I gave him every opportunity to back out of it. I explained that only 7 players broke 90 points this year. He said that if Patrick Kane can get 88, Schenn can get 90 because Kane blows.

I can't in good conscience turn that down.

LOL. I love Schenn but even I wouldn't make that wager in your friends position.

I correct myself. 5 players had 90+.

D. Sedin, St. Louis, Perry, H. Sedin, Stamkos,

Winning.

It's unfortunate that Minnesota decided to turn him into a defenseman.

He's a very weak defender. Very poor decisions with the puck. I'd take Meszaros or Stall over Burns every time. Burns is a Forward playing defense.
