Ian White

Saw this on the trade boards...

http://www.nhlpa.com/News/Headlines/...e-on-the-Coast

Quote:

White, who had a career-best 38 points split between Toronto and Calgary in 2009-10, is hoping to contribute strong play at both ends of the ice when he embarks on his first full season in California.
Helping net the Sharks a Cup is priority No. 1.

“The pieces seem to be in place to have a legitimate shot at winning it all,” said White. “I haven’t been here a long time yet, but you feel very good when you look at the players we have and what everyone’s expectations are. Obviously, it’s always tough just to get to the playoffs each year, so you just take things one at a time. But I’m happy to be here and to do whatever I can to contribute.”

After two seasons of wearing four different uniforms, White, deservedly, feels right at home.
:help:

EDIT: I see that we're already discussing this in the mega-thread...Oops.

Lol.

I posted it because we are discussing it in the off season thread, then Superroyain made a duplicate post, now you posted it here.

How nutty if it's the case. I'm not complaining at all though. I almost feel have the D now to allow some time for promotion from within for the forwards.

jwhitesj 06-29-2011 03:49 PM

So is he signed and the Sharks just haven't announced it yet?

Sounds that way. Brodie seemed to agree, though said he didn't know anything personally.

Does White have a NMC/NTC? Possible that DW is keeping it under wraps because he is looking for a possible trade? Like Gooch.

The NMC/NTC would only kick in on July 1st.

In any case, doing so would be a terrible, terrible, terrible move. Has that ever been done before, sign and trade of a UFA?

Didn't that happen to Thornton?

Thornton was a pending RFA, signed his deal, and then was traded 23 games in. Similarities, yes, but different enough.

Then it was Boyle.

Ya, that's who your thinking of. He signed with Tampa then they forced him to waive his NTC and traded him to us. Was a strange series of events.

Yeah, but he had signed his contract a year before he was traded. Kind of like Carter.

There was a player who signed a new deal and the NTC would not take effect except for the fact DW honored it. That much I remember and it was either JT or Boyle.

EDIT: Boyles last contract took effect in the 2008-2009 season. He was traded to the Sharks July 2008.

DP just shot this rumor down.

SacLandshark 06-29-2011 05:02 PM

Am I the only one that sees no evidence that a deal is in place from reading the article?

"White, who had a career-best 38 points split between Toronto and Calgary in 2009-10, is hoping to contribute strong play at both ends of the ice when he embarks on his first full season in California."

hoping is highlighted

"After two seasons of wearing four different uniforms, White, deservedly, feels right at home."

This is just the NHLPA bragging about how happy one of their minions is...

I'd love to see the sharks go heavy on D - I liked what White offered and loved his attitude...

Yes.

"when he embarks on his first full season in California."

OrrNumber4 06-29-2011 05:08 PM

The twitter verse is going crazy over this, off the first citation from danleecook, then FTF. An official answer will have to come out soon.

In context that is saying he hopes to provide those things to the Sharks during his first full season. Not that he hopes to get his first full season.

The article implies he is remaining with the Sharks next season. If it is in fact wrong, it's a seriously stupid reporter.

One explanation (since White's quotes are pretty convincing that he has signed a deal) is that SJ had a deal in place prior to acquiring Burns, and then wavered on the deal after the transaction.

Shot down the Niemi rumor too, so who knows? ;)

Not saying DP is wrong since he's almost always right, but it doesn't hurt to continue the speculation.

Well in that situation he would not have 'signed the deal' and would not thus be talking like he did. If he signed the deal, even if we don't know about it, the Shark's are on the hook.

sweHockeypunk21 06-29-2011 05:17 PM

FORWARDS
Dany Heatley ($7.500m) / Joe Thornton ($7.000m) / Patrick Marleau ($6.900m)
Ryane Clowe ($3.625m) / Logan Couture ($1.241m) / Joe Pavelski ($4.000m)
Jamie McGinn ($0.725m) / Torrey Mitchell ($1.366m) / Benn Ferriero ($0.850m)
John McCarthy ($0.550m) / Andrew Desjardins ($0.540m) / Ben Eager ($0.965m)
/ / Frazer McLaren ($0.543m)

DEFENSEMEN
Dan Boyle ($6.666m) / Douglas Murray ($2.500m)
Marc-Edouard Vlasic ($3.100m) / Brent Burns ($3.550m)
Jason Demers ($1.250m) / Ian White ($2.999m)
/ Justin Braun ($0.875m)

GOALTENDERS
Antti Niemi ($3.800m) / Antero Niittymaki ($2.000m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $62,548,329; BONUSES: $587,500
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $1,751,671

That would be a good team through the regular season, with a stacked top 6. The 3rd line would be what needs improved by the deadline. I am not sure about Whites contract though. I'd be okay with a one year extension. If we signed him more long term, we'd probably have to trade one of Heatley, Clowe or Pavelski (as much as it sucks, Thornton, Marleau, Couture and Burns come first) for a package of picks/prospects/young NHL players to replenish the youth.

Meh, It didn't seem like the speculation was all the strong to begin with.

As someone else pointed out, the mechanics are that if White signed the SPC, the Sharks are on the hook. If the Sharks waivered and aren't going through with it, it would have to be that they typed it up but did not forward it to White.
