as per Bob McKenzie.

Ewwwwwww.

hbk 07-01-2011 01:27 PM

I like this. He's a bandaid until VIsentin is ready. It's a good value signing.

Well, this isn't too bad. I mean, 2012 is a deep draft and we will be drafting really high now.

OR

Sean Burke works his magic with Mike Smith the headcase and he becomes a Vezina candidate like Bryz. One can hope.

We could have signed God to play net and I'm not sure we were making the playoffs this year. West is much improved.

I'm going to predict a Jovo re-signing at this point.

PhoPhan 07-01-2011 01:34 PM

He's big, so maybe Burke can work his magic, and at least we can assume he'll get along with Tippett. But I'm hoping this is only the 2nd of a three-headed goalie plan.

Swat Ultra 07-01-2011 01:36 PM

Good Value, not sure if this will go well but we will see could of been worse i guess.

untouchable21 07-01-2011 01:37 PM

Not a bad signing. Smith has potential to be very solid especially with Sean Burke coaching him. That said, I see the Coyotes staring down a lottery pick unless they vastly over achieve. West is going to be ridiculously difficult.

Jovanovski will not return in my estimation. I suspect he'll be back in Florida.

Naurutger 07-01-2011 01:42 PM

TSNBobMcKenzie: Confirmed, Ed Jovanovski to Florida. [via

Mike Smith -- He played just 22 games for Tampa Bay due to a knee injury and the acquisition of Dwayne Roloson, but Smith won 13 games with 2.90 GAA. He was solid in the playoffs, allowing just two goals on 48 shots in 120 minutes of relief action. He's just 29, and remains very talented.

On 10 June 2011, I wrote that Mike Smith was my preferred option. Well, I got him. I just hope that Sean Burke, Don Maloney, and I are right about this . . .

Then there are guys like Nabokov or Schneider who could be traded for. The benefit of Schneider is that the Canucks have limited cap space and some key players to resign, especially in light of a President’s Trophy / Stanley Cup Finals run. So they wouldn’t want contracts going back.

LaBarbara was good insurance, though they might have acted too soon. If they could get a Schneider / Smith combo, with them both hungry for the number one job, it’d propel them both to greater things, and help cover for some of the uh, deficiencies, we have that Bryzgalov was so good at hiding.

The Brewmeister 07-01-2011 01:57 PM

Dont mind this. Hopefully he picks it up and can retain his original value. Smith is a good goalie, just really unreliable at being consistant.

Mossy 07-01-2011 02:00 PM

Hey at least it's not turco.

His style will benefit our slow defense group. His puck moving abilities are up there with Turco, but he's not a proven starter and seems a bit aloof most nights. Bryzgalov 2.0.

Ummm...you quoted rt, not yourself.

Varlarmov to Colorado. Vokoun still available.

It is worth noting that before Burke got a hold of him, Bryz had similar numbers to Smith. That said, I think if Burke can turn Smith around it would be a bigger accomplishment than his work with Bryz.

PhoPhan 07-01-2011 02:09 PM

I have legitimately no idea where Vokoun ends up at this point. Nothing seems to fit.

My original statement was post 208 of the Bryz negotiation rights traded to the Philadelphia Flyers thread. In it, I quoted rt above my comments. Somehow when I tried to copy and paste it here, I ended up with a link to post 205, which was by rt, but my comments below.

Bring him here Maloney.

moosemeister 07-01-2011 02:10 PM

Love this signing. I really thought he was our only realistic option, so lets hope the coaching staff can get him going in the right direction.

Sindiggy 07-01-2011 02:10 PM

Washington just made a sweet deal, they got a #1 for Varlamov, and it could end up being the #1 overall pick, where they can select Nail.

I wouldn't have given up a #1 for a goalie, geesh, at least for an unproven goalie like Varlamov.

Looks like Vokoun (thinking multiple teams were in on his services) has priced himself out of the market. Now, I'm thinking that Vokoun signs with CBJ.

AZcoyotes33 07-01-2011 02:12 PM

Just throwing this out there. VERY UNLIKELY but....... would anybody be open to signing Vokoun and maybe dropping Barbs to Portland or letting him go through waivers?

I dont know if the Yotes thought Vokoun would be open AFTER colorado and we still have TONS of cap space?

JUST A THOUGHT

Cap space will never matter to us.
