Interesting.

Cheaper than Gordo and with even better homer appeal. Not a true shutdown guy like I wanted, but it's hard to be upset with this deal.

CapsWolverinesUSA 07-01-2011 01:15 PM

Isn't it fair to say that Halby and Gordo are kind of similar players? Solid right-handed faceoff guys with PK abilities and good forechecking? Both solid clubhouse guys too.

I'd MUCH rather have Halpern at $825k than Gordo at $1.3m.

Both a bit fragile, but to me Halpern has more offensive potential (may just be a question of opportunities though).

If Halpern's healthy this is a no brain win, IMO, and I'm a big fan of Gordon.

NobodyBeatsTheWiz 07-01-2011 01:20 PM

My favorite Halpy moment is still when he got pissed at Staal for repeatedly cheating in the face-off dot, and jumped him after a draw (and I believe bloodied him). Classic.

Ovechkins Wodka 07-01-2011 01:28 PM

i like it bringing him back. Does this mean no more gordon?

Gordon signing with Phoenix means no more Gordon. :sarcasm:

WetHog 07-01-2011 01:34 PM

I like that they brought him back. Good to have a hometown Boy back on the team.

Say hello to our new Jason Arnott

Good signing

EYEuhFRAYtee 07-01-2011 01:40 PM

Welcome home Halpy. :)

HSHS 07-01-2011 01:45 PM

Good swap with gordo. And I'm a big gordo fan. I need to go check the prediction thread. I think I nailed this gordo contract!

LetsGoBears 07-01-2011 01:46 PM

So, this FA day is going well.

Hivemind 07-01-2011 02:18 PM

Think he gets an A?

PuckBuddy 07-01-2011 02:20 PM

i had this weird dream about drury (after passing a physical) for ~1M, but this is fine and dandy.

puck up hamrlik, maybe a dirty RW and call it an offseason.

Does Ward count?

Scouting Report

Assets
Is a diligent worker. Plays a solid defensive game and excels on the penalty kill. Possesses solid leadership qualities and the ability to play both center and wing.

Flaws
Has struggled when called upon to serve a top-six forward role, since he's extremely streaky in the offensive zone and not a natural talent.

Career Potential
Versatile veteran forward with defensive ability.

Awards
1998ECAC - Second-Team All-Conference Team
1997ECAC - Second-Team All-Conference Team

Is this for Halpern or Laich? :sarcasm:

Neither, it's me. A pitch to McPhee to include me in the free agent frenzy.

Jasper17 07-01-2011 02:51 PM

Not bad for one year. Solid 4th line guy who can play 3rd line if needed. I liked Gordo though.

the best part is that the caps just picked up three players from teams which are known for their commitment to systems and defensive play.

i've never used one of these before, but.... :yo:

FrankM73 07-01-2011 04:58 PM

I view the Halpern signing this way

Halpern:
9x 10+ goal scorer (including 2x 20 goal scorer)
57% FO
PK player
4th line Center
825k, 1 yr
homegrown boy!

Gordon:
0x 10+ goal scorer
57% FO
PK player
4th line Center
1.3 mil, 2yrs

who would you pick? Halpern all the way for me!

txpd 07-01-2011 05:35 PM

traveling all day and coming in late.

if there is one player in the nhl that really cares if the washington capitals win a stanley cup, its this player.

happy to see him back.

BTCG 07-01-2011 06:00 PM

GREAT move!

Late face-off advantage just shifted to the Caps: a much needed improvement!
