[WSH/COL] Varlamov for a 1st in '12, 2nd in '12 or '13

Caps have the option of either the second in 2012 or 2013.

mrwarden 07-01-2011 01:03 PM

Very nice value, IMO.

SK13 07-01-2011 01:04 PM

Yikes, that draft choice could be top-5 in the deepest draft year in almost a decade.

WetHog 07-01-2011 01:05 PM

Excellent news. Flushed a turd, and got a sweet smelling bowl (1st and 2nd rd picks) in return.

CapsWolverinesUSA 07-01-2011 01:07 PM

Incredible return. Stunning, franklyl, with a guy like Vokoun floating out there. If nothing else, that frees us up to trade our #1 pick at the deadline and land a major player.

Hivemind 07-01-2011 01:07 PM

I was so opposed to not bringing back Varly... until I saw this return. Holy ****. That could be Yakupov. Worst case it's a middle of the round first in a deep draft.

Especially considering Varlamov still isn't signed. Wow...a possible top 10 pick in a supposedly deep draft. Nice.

BiPolar Caps 07-01-2011 01:07 PM

But Colorado doesn't do Russians. :sarcasm:

goph94 07-01-2011 01:08 PM

Wow. While I'm sorry to see him go, I guess moving one of the three was ultimately inevitable. Given the recent developments surrounding Varly's situation, he was probably the best asset of the three to move.

Also agree with the others, GREAT value on the deal. Hello Yakupov?

BrooklynCapsFan 07-01-2011 01:08 PM

That's a great return, but I still don't like moving Varlamov at this juncture.

I know it was Varlamov who forced the caps' hand, but god. Neuvirth is just so mediocre. What a waste.

Langway 07-01-2011 01:08 PM

Mahoney said on CapsReport this week the '12 draft looks pretty strong. Seems deep in the way of puck moving defensemen in particular.

Wow.

So the Caps could potentially have a high 1st and a high 2nd out of this deal in a deep draft?

Props to GMGM on this one.

Mogo 07-01-2011 01:10 PM

OMG congratz on highway robbery

BiPolar Caps 07-01-2011 01:10 PM

If Varly gets injured in the first few games and has a season like he did this last year, Colorado will never deal with us again. First Flash last season and now this, always with the damaged goods.

Any idea when they have to make that choice?

I Believe 07-01-2011 01:12 PM

1st rounder in a very deep draft. Colorado just finished 29th. That's all I will say on that note :)

sk84fun_dc 07-01-2011 01:12 PM

Like the return; like that he is going to the Western Conf and should still be there if with Colorado after realignment.

(going to wait until later to update the contract thread...too many moving parts right now)

CapsWolverinesUSA 07-01-2011 01:13 PM

We knew all along that something had to give with the three-headed goalie monster. Not in my wildest dreams could I have expected it to work out this well. Neuvy is solid, Holtby has the "it" factor and now gets a real shot to go for the #1 gig, and the guy with the health issues is out the door for an amazing return.

Wow.

We may look back on this one day and regret the trade, but I'm not really sure how anyone can be anything but thrilled with the way this has played out (without the benefit of hindsight).

Don't forget Konowalchuk.

goph94 07-01-2011 01:13 PM

Haha I just checked out the Avs board and it's the polar opposite over there. Every post is basically "NOOOOOO" and ripping the GM :D

DBS 07-01-2011 01:13 PM

This is a GREAT deal for the Caps. Wow. Makes up for the Brouwer trade.

JMcLeaf 07-01-2011 01:13 PM

Awesome deal for you guys! Might be a lottery pick.

Boris RS 07-01-2011 01:14 PM

Sherman again ****ed up trade .

Enjoy our picks :shakehead.

After Gusarov and Kamensky, no :shakehead.

Whopper88 07-01-2011 01:14 PM

Great deal for the Caps, the first pick could turn into Mikhail Grigorenko or Nail Yakupov.

Codependent 07-01-2011 01:16 PM

Had to do it. I had been thinking they might trade their 11 pick this season, so this makes a lot of sense given their situation. Great value for the Caps even if Varly was gonna resign because the injury situation obviously makes him a huge gamble at this point. I love the guy- always hoped he would end up the starter but his health is just such a huge gamble and the Caps have Neuvy and Holtby. Worst case scenario this is still good value. Best case scenario they get the kind of steal Boston got in trading Kessel to Toronto- well, not quite since they got 1sts, but you get my point.
