Construct Your Lines

Now that Ray is pretty much done making moves, how would you like our forward lines to look this season? Here's my take:

Kunitz-Crosby-Sullivan

Neal-Malkin-Kennedy

Cooke-Staal-Dupuis

Asham-Letestu-Adams

Primary Call-ups: Tangradi, Jeffrey

Had we landed Jagr I would've had him on Geno's wing, with TK playing on L1 with Sid as I felt that Kennedy and Sid's game would compliment each other better. Sullivan seems to be the kind of player that I think can really thrive with Crosby though, almost like a poor man's St. Louis. He's fast, shifty, tenacious, and very talented with the puck. TK i think also has some prior experience playing with Geno.

seems like people are forgetting that Tangradi could very well take the next step and earn a Top 6 spot.

Im not sweating TK, Sullivan, Tangradi, Jeffrey. RW by committee.

He could, but I think Shero feels he could also benefit from a few more months down in WBS as well. He's only got 1 full year of AHL experience under his belt. Couldn't hurt to give him a little more seasoning first.

I don't like the idea of a cooke-staal-dupuis line for some reason. Defensively it should be a **** to score against, but there's no primary puck carrier on that line. Staal will have to really step up his offensive game for our third line to maintain it's impact.

I'd honestly rather try Dupuis with Letestu and Adams, and have Asham as our reserve forward and one of Jeffrey, Tangradi or Johnson on Staal's RW.

Or try..

Dupuis-Staal-Johnson
Cooke-Letestu-Adams
Asham

Dupuis was a beast in the last stretch of the season when he was used on the LW with talbot and conner. I'd like to see him stay on the LW if possible.

Other than that, I agree.

Jeffrey isn't one of our 12 best forwards until he proves otherwise. He'll certain try at camp. He has a chance to force himself onto the roster.

Maybe it's the sour taste Jagr and Talbot have left in my mouth today, but for some reason I feel like our team has regressed.

Someone talk some sense into me, please. I need it. In a really low place right now :(

That roster is better than last years except possible the 4th line. Letestu and Connor were on the third line last year for a pretty long time, including a rather impressive win streak if I recall. Neal and Sullivan are replacing Asham and Cooke as Malkin's wings. Biggest potential downgrades are Asham vs Rupp and Letestu vs Talbot, and I don't know that either are much of a downgrade. Asham and Letestu are both better offensively at the very least. It's just a better lineup imo.

He can also try when his leg is put back together.

M0NTY26 07-01-2011 04:42 PM

I just see Sully as Duffman 2.0

Kruncher11 07-01-2011 04:43 PM

So do you guys see N. johnson fitting in anywhere this season? Or would that spot be better filled with Tangradi or Jefferey ?

his minimum of half a point per game in each of the last three years says otherwise. Aside from the potential to be hurt all year I suppose.

This is what I expect to see on opening night.

Hopefully, Shero will get rid of Niskanen and acquire a better #5.

He'll definitely be given a shot. Jeffrey and Tangradi will most likely be tried first, but Johnson is likely the next up.

I just think Tangradi and Jeffrey are better than Johnson. I know Tangradi doesn't have to go through waivers though, not sure about Jeffrey. Pretty sure Johnson does, so that helps Johnson's chances of making the team.

I'd argue he is, when healthy, which he will not be 100% in September/October.

Regressed? Really? I think when healthy this is easily a top 3 team in the NHL on paper. Talbot will be easier to replace (and forget) than most people probably think, meanwhile I strongly believe that Asham will do a fine job in place of Rupp. It will really just be a question of staying HEALTHY.

I really don't think Niskanen is all that bad as a 5th d-man.

I imagine alot of these will look the same

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS
Chris Kunitz ($3.725m) / Sidney Crosby ($8.700m) / Tyler Kennedy ($2.000m)
James Neal ($2.875m) / Evgeni Malkin ($8.700m) / Steve Sullivan ($1.500m)
Matt Cooke ($1.800m) / Jordan Staal ($4.000m) / Pascal Dupuis ($1.500m)
Arron Asham ($0.775m) / Mark Letestu ($0.625m) / Craig Adams ($0.675m)
Nick Johnson ($0.550m)

DEFENSEMEN
Paul Martin ($5.000m) / Zbynek Michalek ($4.000m)
Brooks Orpik ($3.750m) / Kristopher Letang ($3.500m)
Matt Niskanen ($1.500m) / Deryk Engelland ($0.566m)
Ben Lovejoy ($0.525m)

GOALTENDERS
Marc-Andre Fleury ($5.000m) / Brent Johnson ($0.600m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled using the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $61,866,667; BONUSES: $0
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $2,433,333

Outside of maybe flipping TK and Sullivan. Jeffrey not ready to start the year, Tangradi can still be sent down without clearing waivers, he starts the year in WBS, barring a ridiculous camp.

Most importantly, $2.4M in cap space, will look really nice to snag a RW at the deadline.

I agree with this, although I'de like to see him play a full season here first just to see where he sits.

But is a 5th d-man worth 1.5 mill??

vid387 07-01-2011 05:10 PM

I still think we'll add Winchester for that 4th line LW and another depth D man to compete.

Long shot would be dealing Niskanen and using the money to sign that vet D man along with another RW project such as Langenbrunner/Dumont and moving Dupuis to LW.

Well, with the way our guys have been getting hurt over the last few years a puck moving 5th d-man could just as easily become a top 4 d-man. For all we know he can even end up performing above his salary for us.

Gary Roberts 07-01-2011 05:14 PM

I swear on all things holy, if Pascal Dupuis spends any significant amount of time on the first line, I will burn things

That being said, I'd like to see
