Emelin and Diaz: Are they good enough to make up for the loss of Hamrlik

Both of these defenders are coming over as star defensemen in their respective leagues and both have fared well at the international level. Pierre Mcguire has gone as far as to say that Yemelin was one of the better defenders outside the NHL. Mean while Diaz clearly has great wheels, vision and hands. My question is, are they good enough defensively to make up for the loss of a very important defenseman over the past few years in Roman Hamrlik. Diaz seems to be primarily an offensive defenseman, while Emelin is clearly a physical player, who can skate and can pass. But what is his defensive awareness truly like.

One Man Rock Band 07-02-2011 11:57 PM

Everyone on this forum has seen both players a combined 15 times lol

No way. Hamrlik was arguably our best defenseman all year the last 2 years. They simply don't have the necessary NHL experience to make up for Hamrlik.

It will be a learning year for them. But with hopefully a healthy Markov and Gorges, THEY should be able to replace Hammer.

Management must be confident in them..

I truly fear Markov injuring himself. Thats the main obstacle. He still hasnt recovered yet after his last injury. Scary stuff.

A warrior like like Hamrlik can't be replaced because of the experience factor - no substitute for that. Rookies need the leadership and experience of these guys. Fortunately we still have Gill and Spacek.

There is no denying the skill level of Yemelin and Diaz. Check out the hi-lite reels in the defencemen thread. Yemelin is a monster! Tough, great skater, and a wristy that's a laser.

Scratching my head

Sorry, what's the confusion? I think there can't be enough veterans to show the kids the ropes.

BobbyShehan 07-03-2011 12:11 AM

Hammer had the ability to slow down the game and show his partner what to do. I've seen him save Spacek's life a few times and he was a great teacher for younger guys. You can't just replace a guy like him with kids. Maybe management feels Gorges is ready to assume this role but he'll never have the talent that Roman has. I don't understand this at all. We'll miss him more than most people think.

Emelin is going to be Subban like.

Russian Warrior 07-03-2011 12:18 AM

Emelin is a stud.

The Habs forwards have no problem throwing the puck back to the D men in the O zone. They do this more than other teams because they can't put the puck in the net, whether ES or PP. Emelin excels in this type of situation.

Because I'm infallible.

Yemelin will be paired with Markov, Diaz will go in Hamilton.

Seriously, if your wife was infallible would she have married you? Oh never mind, she probably did it just to spite you.

Jee 07-03-2011 01:17 AM

I heard Yemelin manhandled a bear once. Did you ever see a black bear with a black eye?

Markov-Gorges replaces Hamrlik-Wisniewski.

Yemelin-Diaz is more like found money. Which is awesome.

Markowicz 07-03-2011 02:55 AM

I hope so, but its still too early to tell. The key will definitely be Markov and Subban being as good as they can be. If they aren't or one of them gets injured, then i think we are in trouble. Diaz will only play in Montreal this year if there are injuries. Yemelin I hope is at least the 7th D, kind of like Weber last year. Will he replace Hamrlik? No, he'll replace Weber. Weber and Gorges will replace Hamrlik, and though they aren't as experienced, i think they'll get the job done.

TheBuriedHab 07-03-2011 02:59 AM

I'm interested to see what they do with Diaz. A lot of people are pegging him to start in Hamilton this season, but I could really see him start with Montreal. I remember the Press release when he signed specifically said they felt he could play in the nhl now. So we will see.

Galchenyuk x 27 07-03-2011 03:05 AM

They will not make up for the loss of Hammer

That being said, I've seen emelin play on several occasions and I like what I saw.
Not affraid to get dirty and gets the job done. I hope he can adapt to the NHL style of play rather quickly.

As for Diaz, never seen him play so I hope he's good!
