Dispatch: #CBJ close to a trade that would send RW Mike Blunden to Montreal for minor-league F Ryan Russell, twin brother of Kris Russell.
Um...... why?

Blunden for Russell deal will be finalized once Blunden passes a physical with Montreal docs, likely later today.
So I guess its a done deal

Can I get a scouting report of Blunden?

knucklepuck28 07-07-2011 12:06 PM

Hopefully the twins can play together in Springfield.

Double your whining. Double your whining about whining.

Checker, willing to drop the gloves. Not much offensive upside. 4th liner at best in NHL.

KallioWeHardlyKnewYe 07-07-2011 12:23 PM

First Nash's BFF.

Now Russell's twin.

We're coddling.

Monk 07-07-2011 12:25 PM

"Come to Columbus, we'll acquire your friends and relatives."

Which one is the evil twin?

this will definitly be apart of are push for the playoffs

Blunden was a Hitch type of player. In 51 NHL games, he has 2 goals.

I agree the Jackets need size, but if Blunden wasn't in the long term future of the team, why keep him?

I'd prefer the Jackets trade Russell, but his brother looks like a decent AHLer, possibly a decent call-up.

Monk 07-07-2011 12:35 PM

In regard to Ryan, from Montreal's board via Tuggy:

"Lol ya maybe a little harsh but his brother scored more as an NHL defenseman than he did as an AHL forward."

Can't figure out how this is a worthwhile move...?

Roadman 07-07-2011 12:37 PM

Sandpaper for Springfield?

Don't really know why trade Blunden to get that though. Only thing I can come up with is uncertainty of Blunden's ability to stay healthy.

JacketsFanWest 07-07-2011 12:39 PM

Ryan Russell had a 20 goal and 19 goal season, then slipped last season:

But the last three seasons he was +17, +16 and +27.

He also has Calder Cup playoff experience.

Fro 07-07-2011 12:42 PM

15 posts in and no "It Starts Now"???? slipping!

The new Sedin twins maybe ;)

Sore Loser 07-07-2011 01:14 PM

I saw Ryan Russell quite a bit, as he played just up the road from us in Kootenay during his junior career.

He was a good goal scorer (not great) in the WHL, though obviously undersized. He doesn't have the same skating ability as Kris, and is very easy to over power physically. That being said, he did look like he had potential to be a scoring threat in the AHL, but I don't see him being any more than that.

The first thing I remember about him was how hard he got rocked as a 16 year old, on a shoulder check by then Spokane Chiefs captain Joff Kehler. IIRC, Russell missed a good chunk of that season with a concussion and wasn't quite the same after that. Might have been a big part of the reason he didn't develop the same as Kris.

Hopefully, he will be a solid top-6 guy for the Falcons. Blunden wouldn't have done anything more than that.

I for one welcome our new Russell overlords.

I hope we can be creepy just like Vancouver for even just 1 NHL game. The Sedins still creep me out to this day.

Welcome aboard new Russell.

Talent Analysis

Russell, much like his brother in Medicine Hat, provides an excellent offensive game on the ice. With strong vision and passing, Russell is also an excellent skater and isnít afraid to shoot the puck, which he does with great accuracy. Russellís only knock, though, is also one he shares with his brother. Being undersized at 5í9, 165lbs, Ryan is by no means considered a sure offensive threat, even at the next level of play, where physical play intensifies even more than that at the Western League level.

Future

Should Russell be able to, at the very least, improve his overall strength, both upper body and lower, heíll greatly increase his chances of finding success at another level.

CBJSprague24 07-07-2011 01:29 PM

Habs fans: Blunden is a fourth-liner/AHLer who will scrap if need be. Rough and tumble guy.

And I really don't mean to beat this running gag to death and will stop if you're getting annoyed, but since it's uncanny that these things keep happening while I was away from the wonders of the internet...I was taking a nap when this trade was announced. Running tally:
-Todd Richards hired- No internet
-Carter acquired- At the beach
-Wisniewski signed- Out running around Daytona
-Sanford, Johnson, Dekanich signings- At NASCAR souvenir trailers
-Martinek signed- Traveling home
-Russell twin picked up- Nap.

I thought that was Mase...Mase gave it to Blunden after Claude's second win. :sarcasm:
