LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings have agreed to terms on a two-year contract with defenseman Alec Martinez, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today.

Martinez, who turns 24 on July 26, recorded 16 points (5-11=16) and 18 penalty minutes in 60 regular season games with the Kings in 2010-11. He appeared in all six postseason games with the Kings, recording one assist and two penalty minutes. Martinez also suited up for 20 regular season games with the American Hockey League’s Manchester Monarchs in 2010-11 and had 16 points (5-11=16) and 14 penalty minutes.

Among NHL rookie defensemen last season Martinez was tied for sixth in goals, 10th in assists, eighth in points, fifth in plus-minus (+11), eighth in shots (74) and ninth in hits (69).

The 6-0, 205-pound native of Rochester Hills, Mich. started last season in Manchester and was recalled to the Kings on Nov. 23. At the time of his recall Martinez ranked first on the Monarchs in points (tied for second among AHL defensemen) and assists. He was also one of Manchester’s alternate captains.

Martinez made his NHL debut for the Kings in 2009-10 and played in four games that season (zero points and two penalty minutes). He led Manchester defensemen in 2009-10 with 30 points and 23 assists, while leading the club overall with a plus-12 rating. He also helped the Monarchs reach the Eastern Conference Finals during the Calder Cup Playoffs.

Martinez began his pro career with Manchester in 2008-09 after three standout collegiate years at Miami of Ohio, where in 2007-08 he was a CCHA First-Team All-Star, Second Team All-America selection, CCHA All-Tournament honoree and named CCHA Best Defensive Defenseman.

I'll be upset if it's anything over 1M/year. I'm thinking 850K

DAkings20 07-08-2011 01:53 PM

Was this the announcement holding up the Doughty deal:sarcasm:

Good for A-mart, hopefully the number is good.

Nose of Sutter 07-08-2011 01:53 PM

He made more than that last season, no way he doesn't get at least somewhat of a raise.

Doughty has to follow, we wouldn't do this blindly.

That was his cap hit, which includes potential bonuses, not his salary. I'd guess around $1.6 million total. Dean usually gets guys to sign fairly cheap on their second contracts.

I don't think the two really have anything to do with each other. AM just doesn't make enough money to really be an influence on Doughty's contract.

Interesting to see where Martinez is now. For a few years there he was kind of seen as an after thought to the other defensemen prospects (Hickey, Teubert, Voynov, etc.)

According to capgeek, his cap hit was $875k and actually made $662,500.

We are skating on around $2 million in cap space after all three RFA's and Doughty signs based on minimal raises for the RFA's and Doughty in the 6's. It does make a difference on future moved, how much we have to go on, and signing our other RFA's.

I know, but the Kings and Martinez must have had a pretty good idea of how much he was going to make, give or take a hundred grand, maybe two at the most. I really doubt that a couple of hundred grand a year would really influence the negotiations with Doughty, even considering the tight cap space.

1.6 is huge money for his second contract. I'd bet 1.1.

I agree! 800,000 - 875,000

kingsholygrail 07-08-2011 02:47 PM

Talk about a d-man that seized the day away from the other prospects. Glad we got him for a few more years.

northernKing 07-08-2011 02:47 PM

Why are these types of signings not reported on LA Kings Insider? I really like what Hammond does on the site but you'd think the team would give him some inside scoops?
