Four scoring lines fails 100% of the time.

HabsDood 07-11-2011 05:42 AM

Salary wise we're in deep **** next year..

jadensdad 07-11-2011 06:40 AM

depth defenceman (sopel, mara type) Veteran 4th line center that wins draws (drury) and that is it. That is what we will end up doing

Stjonnypopo 07-11-2011 06:51 AM

Kovalev would destroy the team.

He's exactly the opposite of what this team needs, speed and intensity. He was already frustrating his last year here and this year it would be worse.

Marc Bergevins Suit 07-11-2011 07:08 AM

I too would take a chance on Steve Bernier. Another big body, with pretty good offensive skills. His conditioning has been a problem, but maybe just maybe he finds himself in Montreal. He does throw the body and can kill penalties. Cant imagine him signing anything but a cheap contract. On a one year deal would it be that bad? He could become a fixture on the 3rd if all goes well. It could be a low risk decent reward signing. Kostitsyn-Eller-Bernier would be a big line that can hit and put the puck in the net.

Freaky Habs Fan 07-11-2011 07:15 AM

I'd sign a big body for one year...a guy like Brad Winchester. A faceoff specialist would be nice too but I'm not sure if we have the place for that...

Another defenceman would be nice, but if Spacek is healthy, he's a good veteran to have around...

prairie hab 07-11-2011 07:36 AM

Some bargain-bin offers could be made to the likes of:

Chris Drury if he checks out injury wise (4th line center)
1 of :
Brad Winchester (4th line muscle and grit)
Mike Grier (great PK player and veteran leadership)

Bryan McCabe (if contract is friendly he can generate some PP offense and provide a bit of grit/nasty as a 6th defenseman)

PATCHESx67 07-11-2011 07:40 AM

pass on Kovalev

If people only had the expectations of a 3rd liner making near league minimum then he'd be fine.

But since a lot of people hate Kovy and have personal bias against him in the first place then yes I'm sure plenty of bigots would be frustrated. :sarcasm:

If you get mad because Kovy isn't putting up 50-60+ points in 3rd line duties then I don't know what to say, you either just hate Kovy (not you generally speaking) or you have impossible expectations and would have expected Jagr to put up 100pts.

AntonCH 07-11-2011 07:59 AM

Kovalev's time here could be described as enigmatic at best
1 1/2 good years and a couple of play-off performances?
With the current make-up of the team we have no use for him
AND he is NOT a 3rd line kind of guy
The Habs have moved on

swimmer77 07-11-2011 08:01 AM

Top four d-man for when the inevitable happens.

White would still start, until Eller was ready to go, and presumably somebody else would get hurt before we got into any numbers problems. If Hannan costs more than that, still find somebody... if it's Sopel or Mara back, or pylonesque toughness in Shane O'Brien, whatever, I would find another depth D, and all the other remaining options will probably be cheaper than Hannan, so cap space isn't a problem. If Madden costs a bit more, it's ok. If he's gone, Kris Draper would be a backup plan for the wily veteran checking center who can still skate.

MasterDecoy 07-11-2011 08:40 AM

next season's upcoming contracts doesn't give goat a lot of leeway.

i'd sign someone like mara or sopel. guys that can play at a reasonable level, that are very cheap and that can fill in when other d-men get injured. and they have to sign a one-year contract.

and finally, probably someone like drury (if he checks out) or a big body on the 4th, although i doubt there is anyone available on the market that would entice me...

No.

1) Cap will go up as Canadian dollar continues to increase, and revenues grow.
2) Laraque's buyout is coming off the books.
3) Spacek, Gill, Moen have contracts coming off the book, we can expect one of them, possibly two, to be replaced by a cheap rookie.
4) Since Eller will be improving rapidly, we'll probably be in a position to trade Gomez.

We're in adequate shape.

TheFalk 07-11-2011 08:54 AM

First, I gota say i was the biggest Kovy fan when he was here, i didnt mind his off nights for all the thrills he provided us (something we didnt see for years before he came to MTL) and i was disapointed when he signed in OTT. This said, Kovy is history, we have a different club now and he does not fit and could only tarnish the memory we have of him in Bleu blanc Rouge.

I really like the idea of bringing Bernier on the roster, he's got size and a decent puck control, he could be a good asset on JM's list. I equally like the idea of Winchester, for the grit and the fact that he is still relatively young. ( When need big bodies who still have fuel in the tank, idk if Chris Neil does).

For Defense i like the idea of signing Scott Hannan, i see him playing as a replacement for Spacek, who i don't really see on the roster full time.. (Can't wait for his contract to end!!!)

So.. Bernier/Winchester + Hannan. Id be happy.

le_sean 07-11-2011 09:02 AM

I like Hannan but where does he fit? Assuming the pairings are along the lines of
Markov-Gorges
Yemelin-Subban
Gill-Weber
Spacek
Diaz
Nash

There really isn't any room.

Protest the Hero 07-11-2011 09:08 AM

If I was going to fill our needs with Free Agency I'd go with:

Fourth line centre: Chris Drury - one year contract, $1.5m. Right-handed centreman , great face-off skills.

Fourth line bruiser: Brad Winchester - two year contract, $2m. Big guy, can still play, fights.

Depth defenseman: Paul Mara - one year contract $800k. Big guy, cheap, stands up for teammates, doesn't complain about a limited role.

The team only has 5 proven NHL regular defensemen. Weber seems like a good bet for a 6th. Emelin may or may not pan out as a 7th. That's it. So there is plenty of room for Hannan. (Or Sopel, Mara, whoever). I think it would be pretty wreckless to count on Diaz for anything. Nash looks promising, but I think he pretty much proved last season in Hamilton that he'd benefit a lot from another year there. Proved that he had real NHL potential. Proved that he needed another year too.

I'm a little surprised to see Bernier mentioned by some. He has basically been a washout... how does anybody hope for anything but the silent version of Latendresse from him? :dunno:

It sounds like Drury isn't going to be healthy enough to ever play again, so I don't think people should be listing him?

I agree with bringing Mara back. Depth is a good thing.

TheFalk 07-11-2011 09:23 AM

The way i see our D:

Markov Yemelin
Subban Gorges
Gill Weber
(Hannan) Spacek (only thing Spacek does is an OK first pass).. Hannan can hit.
Diaz Nash

Le depisteur 07-11-2011 09:25 AM

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Emelin signed a contract similar to Streit's first contract in NA guaranteeing at least 30 games or so.
Also I can easily see Weber playing forward on many nights. Wich would leave room for a 7th defenseman.

I see more a Mara or Sopel type player in that role than a 3.5M Hannan. They might even be available after training camps when we have a better idea of what we have.

Strik_IX 07-11-2011 09:30 AM

Emelin's going straight back to the K if we end up using him as a 7th IMO.

Yep and we don't want that too soon.
