How good are the rangers?

I think they could be a top four team and maybe even beat Pittsburgh for first place and be a top 3 team.what do you guys think?

JeffMangum 07-13-2011 07:26 AM

They could range anywhere from 4th to 10th.

I don't see, barring major injuries, how this team would challenge for a division lead. Pittsburgh, right now, is probably the favorite going into next season. If Pittsburugh falters, I feel the Rangers are the 2nd best team in the division, but I doubt that happens. Even with Crosby/Malkin down, they played at a top-4 rate.

This my top-8:

1) Pittsburgh
2) Washington
3) Buffalo
4) Boston
5) Rangers
6) Montreal
7) Tampa Bay
8) Toronto

The bottom-3 spots are up for grabs; but I have a feeling Toronto makes it, and NJ/Philly miss out. Wouldn't be surprised to see Montreal knocked out either, given their issues with injuries.

I would not hold your breath for that, I would settle for top 8 in the conference!

Barnaby 07-13-2011 07:27 AM

They probably won't win the division, but they could push for it. This is the most optimistic I've been in the last 10 years. I feel like they are close. A Bruin-esque run is possible in the next 2-3 years..

Ih8theislanders 07-13-2011 07:28 AM

I think we finish 6th. Maybe 5th if everything goes right. I don't see us finishing lower than 9th.

I BELIEVE if we overachieve we could probably do that this year. i still see a separation between the upper echelon of the eastern conference, and i dont think we are there just yet. im expecting a much better season out of us this year (4-6 in the east, a few points between next lowest seed so we arent "fighting" for that spot"). Hank will be Hank, Richards and Gaborik will hopefully play as well together as we all hope, but we had those same hopes when we signed Dru and Gomez that they would click with Jagr. some of the younger guys will continue to mature and round out their games, but the older guys will continue to decline. it can go either direction, but we will be a playoff team for sure. it should be a good season either way. it cant come soon enough!

free0717 07-13-2011 07:34 AM

2nd best in division, 5th best in Eastern conferance.

Pittsburgh,Boston, Washington, Tampa Bay still better teams. Flyers went down.

I'm still not convinced Tampa is that much better than us. They lost Gagne/Bergenheim, did nothing to improve their weak defense and have to rely on a 40 something year old in net. Should've signed Vokoun.

patrickfranz1994* 07-13-2011 07:39 AM

You guys are right they probably wont beat Pitt but if skid and Kalinin aren't at full strength which is very well possible we could come in and take the division.and I know hockey season can't come soon enough.

beastly115 07-13-2011 07:39 AM

Anywhere from 4-7 IMO. Anything less than 8 is a failure.

*Nam like flashbacks* Ugh, Kalinin was awful for us in 08-09.

Btw, I know you meant Malkin, and in regards to his injury, he's actually prgressing quite well. Crosby is doing his normal offseason regimens, too.

i cant see toronto making it over the flyers. im sorry

5th or 6th. I won't get my hopes to high. 4th would be great, but unlikely. Teams will still battle it out. I think the Rangers will finish 2nd in their division if the Devils still have a hard time and Philly bombs.

Okay.

I do. :)

Tough to say in the middle of July.

There are questions:

Will BR and Gabby mesh?
Who'll play the left side on that line?
Will the youth regress or take steps forward?
Will we stay healthy?
How will Hank play?
Can the young D handle it all on their own?

Play-offs or bust but where? Middle of the pack is my guess.

Who'll play the left side on that line? Most likely Fedotenko..
Will the youth regress or take steps forward? Slightly improved.
Will we stay healthy? Don't know...
How will Hank play? As well as he does every year
Can the young D handle it all on their own? They did fine last year - but I'd add one solid vet..

Play-offs or bust but where? Middle of the pack is my guess.

I vote 4th - 6th..

Why do people think the Sabres are better than the Rangers?

More depth throughout the lineup, more experienced defense.

They'll be better next season, IMO; but, the Rangers should be the superior team past next year.

Stugots 07-13-2011 08:06 AM

They're definitely making the playoffs. If the offense clicks I can see them finishing 4th or 5th. I'm not ready to say they will beat out Pittsburgh, but I think in the coming years they will have a good chance to.

TonyTheGr8 07-13-2011 08:06 AM

We are any where from 3rd to 6th in the conference, in my opinion. Not sure if we are ready to take the division just yet, but ya never know. I think we are 1 to 2 years away from being a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. We need another scorer, and Richards is a quarter back on the power play, but I think we need that big shot to compliment him..which is why I wasn't necessarily opposed to bringing back McCabe.

Very excited about the season though. I say we NEED to at least get into the 2nd round this year. Don't know if we can win it once we get there, but a deep 2nd round series (6-7 game series) is minimum in my opinion, thoughts?

GAGLine 07-13-2011 08:51 AM

There are way too many IFs. Two years ago, Gaborik had 42 goals and 86 points, and Del Zotto was a rookie sensation. Prospal had 58 points and as a team we were relatively healthy all year. We finished with 87 points, missing the playoffs by 1 point.

This past year, Gaborik only had 22 goals and 48 points, and Del Zotto struggled big time. Prospal was hurt most of the year, and many other players missed signficant time. Yet we finished with 93 points and barely made the playoffs.

That speaks to the progress made by players like Staal, Girardi, Boyle, Prust and the pack line, and the additions of Stepan, Sauer and McD.

With another year of development, and adding Richards, the Rangers would seem to be an improved team from a year ago. But questions still remain.

1) Will Gaborik return to form alongside Richards?
2) Will our 2nd year players progress or regress?
3) Will Del Zotto bounce back from an awful sophomore slump?
4) Will the light go on for Wolski (assuming he's still here)?
5) Will we remain relatively healthy this year?

If everything breaks our way, we will challenge for the division. If not, we're probably looking at a 5th-9th finish.

x BEUKEBOOM x 07-13-2011 09:01 AM

The potential for us to build on last year is better then going in reverse based on:

Addition of Richards.
Pack Line increasing production based on growth + BR/MG line drawing oppositions top pair.
MDZ playing up to potential.
McD taking the next step into a transition threat using skating & passing vision.
Stepan & Anisimov increasing their faceoff percentages.
Erixon exceeds expectations.
Zuccarello exceeds expectations & increases his neutral zone defencive play.

Step backward if:

Considerable/lengthy injuries.
McD/Sauer/Stepan sophmore slump.
Richards can't solve our PP problems.

In short, the same dilemas & wishful thinking all 30 teams have with their players and the reason they play the games instead of building a paper line up and setting the season to Auto Mode leading to the playoffs.

Honestly we could be anywhere from 8th to 3rd but I don't see us having a better record then Washington or Boston. Then again Carolina got back most of their FA's and every other year seams to be their year so they are due and FLA could be a surprise if Theodore has a solid year (:shakehead). And TO & NJ should be better as well. So NYR better be ready to start the season on fire and play their butts off all 82 becasue the East is looking alot tougher then last year.

GarretJoseph* 07-13-2011 09:11 AM

1st or 2nd in East.

Def making the Conf Finals IMO.

This team is going to make a huge jump. Dubi & Cally are due for monster years. Richards & Gabby will put up big numbers. Our defense will get EVEN better and Hank will have an MVP type season.

This is our year. Ohhhh Baby. ;)

Good to see my questions and yours are relatively similar. Must mean I'm on the right track.

Somewhere around #4 to #6 seed in East. By no means a playoff lock however.
