It means they re-signed him. It's on the Phantoms website as well.

Sniperz25 08-02-2004 05:12 PM

He will be the backup and Burke will be bought out.

I doubt that he gets bought out, makes sense to have a vet backup as Chico has yet to survive an entire year without injury. Next year, after Nitty gets 60 AHL starts and more experience, then he will come up.

the guy is eminently tradeable. phoenix is already on the hook for half of the dude's contract, so someone else gets him for cheap... or phoenix could simply say screw it and trade for him back simply so they don't have to pay for him to play elsewhere. still a very serviceable goalie in the NHL. we may start the year with him and have nitty on the phantoms, but at some point he will get traded.

$4.6 mil back up on a team that is cutting salary. Come on!

2.3 million backup on a team that is cutting salary(still more than we like...)

2.3 million dollar starter somewhere else... not a bad deal for someone...

2.3 million to play for someone else... sux for phoenix.

Not sure what got you laughing.
I did not mention salary at all.
He is still pretty good and I do not wnat to stunt Franks growth by sitting hiim on the bench.
Yes he costs too much, but Pho is on the hook for a chunck and it is one year - hold until the deadline to be sure we do not need him then deal - if there is season.

Buyouts are great when its not your money.

.

A chunk? Try 1/2. That still equals $2.3 for a back up. He is out of here.

trade him though... don't buy him out. if no one takes him prior to the start of the season, if there is one, then sit on him and someone will want him later in the season.... like when Hasek goes nutz and leaves the sens.

Sitting on him until later will not work. The Flyers are trying to get under a certain salary number. Also, very few teams need him @ $2.3 mil. Buying him out may be the only way the Flyers can avoid his salary counting against the cap and /or tax. I guess it really matters on the CBA. If it is a cap, Burk must be bought out. This team is rebuilding and there is no need for Burk.

salaries are going to have to be grandfathered into the system... otherwise it won't work... and we don't know how a contract that is getting divided like burke's is going to count against the cap anyway... it isn't like we are really bankrolling a lot at the goalie position between him and Esche in the big scheme of things...

but a starting caliber goalie that is only going to cost someone 2.3 mil is a good commodity, and someone will bite on it at one point or another... potentially phoenix.

FlyHigh 08-03-2004 02:43 PM

I think Phoenix could definitely jump on him. It seems like they are trying to get more talented and they've already added Ricci and O'Donnell. They're also rumored to be in the Hull sweepstakes and who knows what will happen with JR, they might be willing to take him back, but keep in mind that then they would be paying all of that big salary.

tradeable? unless you call a conditional 3rd or 4th tradeable then fine he is.
If someone offers more then that then the Flyers shouldnt blink.

User571 08-04-2004 08:56 PM

Niitty should be the back-up. He's proved he can play in brief stints eh? If Esche gets injured, Niitty could handle things fine-Burke will lose 60% of the games anyway.
