Price & Subban's next year's contract
Next year we got our 2 big franchise player going into restricted free agency. Here's the question I'm asking you guys. What type of contract do you believe we gonna give them in terms of year and money. Are they gonna get locked up for long term?

On my side, if Price has a great year just like last year and/or his rookie year I would love to lock him up long term and buy his free agency with something in the lines of 8ish years 42M, 5.25M per.

As for Subban, I'm not sure how it works for a guy his age. I mean he's not Stamkos but I got a feeling he's gonna have an even better year than last year. This guy can just progress...He was playing 30min a game in the PO... So based on that he's gonna get what? 5ish? Can we all agree this guy is a sure bet? So here's what I'd do. 50-55M for 10 years 5-5.5 per. If it was me I'd even give him 15 years but we're talking about the Montreal Canadiens here and Pierre Gauthier. 10 years is really playsible tho. The Molson will be a huge part in the decisions of these contracts to. Bottom line, if they both get a great year lock them both up long term if possible!

I assume Subban would get 12 mil over 3 type of contract(so that we have one last year as an RFA and can sign him long term at 26) and carey would likely get a 4-5 year term.

Max et Guillaume 07-22-2011 12:50 AM

I would like to see Price locked in for 8-10 years at 5ish per, your 42/8 makes sense to me. Unfortunately, that being said, I expect the Habs to "play it safe" as usual and give him a 4-5 year contract at 4-5M per.

As for Subban, it's either 3 years or 8+, since the Habs will try to do a 12/3 type of deal and keep him as RFA (as LL mentionned), or not lose him to UFA for quite a while. I will **** my pants if they sign Subban to 4 or 5 years...

Gobo 07-22-2011 01:02 AM

Price: 8 years, 40 million.
Subban: 3 years, 12 million and then 7 years 37~ million

We should sign Price till he's 40. DiPietro contract.

especially with the promising results we see from goalies with such contract

insert sarcasm

LyricalLyricist 07-22-2011 01:21 AM

Price won't be signed for 8 years. It's not the habs style and it's just stupid for a goalie. Steve mason was supposed to rival price and look how he turned out. No thanks, 6 years max as he'd be what 31 when it ends? I don't see why we'd pay a premium to have him till 33-34 when he likely won't be in his prime. 6 years is even too much. 4-5 is my bet and my suggestion. At 30, re-evaluate.

NewHabsEra* 07-22-2011 02:00 AM

I wouldnt hesitate to sign Price for a 8 years contract, he is already at the top with a guy like Rinne, he has a big frame and everything you would want from a goaltender, calm poised and top end skills set. I also love the fact he can clear the creeze by his own, dont let anyone intimid himself..

I have a feeling the fact the CBA expires at the end of the season will play into this. Especially if they want to get rid of those long term contracts, or restructure them.

Price could be a real problem because of the ridiculous Bryzgalov contract.

I would sign Price to the Bryzgalov contract in a hearbeat, but Price is younger so he may not want those low paying years during his prime at 32 and 33(2.5 and 1.5 mil).

Edit: Isn't it funny that PG gets **** on for dumping an unhappy SK to Nashville but we don't hear about Burke's gaffe to let Bryzgalov walk for nothing while in Anaheim, now he's a top 5 goalie.

DAChampion 07-22-2011 06:51 AM

I like the fact Gauthier signed his RFAs before August, unlike Gainey used to do.

Maybe if he can lock everyone up we can send an offer sheet to Victor Hedman.

How is it going to be a problem? We have $8m in unused cap space this year, the cap will likely go up next year as well.

HH 07-22-2011 07:46 AM

Subban: 4 years/16M$
Price: 6 years/39M$

Bryzgalov was a UFA and took advantage of Philly being desperate.
Price is an RFA.

shutehinside 07-22-2011 08:04 AM

I think PK gets something in the high 2 to 3 million range and Price gets something in the 4 million range. Both for 3-4 year contracts. Of course this is contingent on their play this year.

Kriss E 07-22-2011 08:06 AM

Not more than 5M cap hit for Price, not more than 4M for PK with bonuses.

habs03 07-22-2011 08:11 AM

I think it would be a perfect time lock up Price for a long time, The Habs don't like huge long term contracts but a 5-6 year deal would be perfect. It also allows Price to get another big contract at at the age of 28-29. I think Subban second contract should be at around 3.5, something like what Letang got, 2-3 years at 3.5 would be perfect.

newtown33 07-22-2011 08:13 AM

Subban isn't going to be signed long term yet. There is a pattern established within the team: ELC, short term at middle price tag to keep them RFA and then long term.

Just like Price and Paccioretty did, just like Subban and Eller will do.

Subban: 2 or 3 years at 3.5 per
Eller: 2 years at 1.9 per
Price: 5 or 6 years at 5/5.5 per

WestIslander 07-22-2011 08:28 AM

5 years / $25,000,000.00

5 years / $20,000,000.00

bcv 07-22-2011 08:34 AM

If everything goes well, Price should make about $5.3M. There is no way Subban makes $5M right after his ELC. IMO' it'll be between $3.75M and $4.5M.

The key with Subban's contract is you want it to end 1-2 years before he is a UFA and then you can sign him to a long term contract.

Exactly the difference, of course.

I can see them, like everyone is saying, 4-5 years for Price.... 3-4 years for Subban.

Anksun 07-22-2011 09:06 AM

I'm guessing you guys are seeing Subban netting 60+ pts next year because there is no way he gets 4M short term (3 years or less) that fast.

Noldo 07-22-2011 09:45 AM

Rough coparables to Subban (ie. young high profile defencemen signing their second contract) include:

Mark Staal (NYR), 5 years at 3.975 million (2010-2015). Actual salary 3.100-3.675-3.775-3.875-5.450.
Lower point production than Subban, higher in Ranger's debt chart playing almost as #1 defender while Subban is (at least for time being) clearly behind Markov.

Kristopher Letang (PIT), 4 years at 3.5 million (2010-2014). Flat salary.
Signed after season of scoring at 57 point pace as fourth in Pittsburgh's dept chart (most likely 2nd in offensive zone).

Keith Yandle (PHO), 5 years at 5.250 million (2011-2016). Actual salary 4.750-5.000-5.250-5.500-5.750.
Coming off from 60 point season playing as Coyotes #1.

Dion Phaneuf (CGY->TOR), 6 years at 6.5 million (2008-2014). Actual salary 7.000-6.500-7.000-6.500-6.500-5.500.
Coming off from 60 points season with Norris nomination.

Shea Weber (NAS), 3 years at 4.5 million (2008-2011). Flat salary.
Coming off from 40 point and on-pace at 30 points seasons.

Drew Doughty (LA), currently unsigned.
One year removed from Norris nomination with 59 point seasons, followed by 40 points season.

Subban will not be relied as teams #1 defenceman at this point and as q consequence he will most likely not be paid as such. If he can establish himself as at least 40-50 point player at this point, 3-4 years at 4 million per would be reasonable (3 keeping him as RFA, 4 taking him straight to UFA).

Longer term would most likely require significantly higher cap hit (some rumours suggesting that Doughty has declined 9 years at 6.9 per contract).
