Flames in the market for a #1 centre UPDATE: It's Lecavalier!

I thought it deserved its own thread. Mods: Feel free to merge with the Jay Feaster (open for business) thread.

“I’m not going to sit here and say that we have a legitimate No. 1 centreman. We don’t. We have players who can slot in there - referring to Backlund, Jokinen, and Brendan Morrison. But we’re still obviously searching and we’re in the market for a No. 1 centre.”
Quote:

“We still have about $3.6 million worth of cap space. We are looking to improve our hockey club every single day. Whether we do something before training camp or there’s an opportunity on the waiver wire or there’s an opportunity during the season or at the trade deadline, I can assure you that ownership has given us a budget . . . we’re permitted to be a cap(-max) team.”
That $3.6 million could double to $7.2 million as both Nik Hagman ($3 million) and Raitis Ivanans ($600,000) could have a hard time cracking the opening day roster.

Any ideas to who the Flames may be targeting? The two names that come to mind are Jason Spezza (OTT) and Vinny Lecavalier (TBL).

Update:
Quote:

Sources saying that the Calgary Flames are very interested in Tampa Bay Lightning forward, Vincent Lecavalier.
Quote:

Jay Feaster has a history with Vincent Lecavalier and knows him very well, however, this does not mean the Lightning will move him.

The Flames don't have enough assets to acquire an actual top line centre.

I have no idea who they could be targeting, but it doesn't seem like a good idea to me. They'd either have to gut the depth or trade the future farm...

MartinVanBuren 09-02-2011 01:23 PM

^^^^The Flames have no depth or farm to trade.

They can have Jarrett Stoll. He would be a #1 center for them.

Phion Keneuf 09-02-2011 01:24 PM

multiple 1sts + top prospect (Bartschi only) will need to be dealt

or just get Gomez for cheap ...

IF one were even available.

What team out there thinks they just have too much talent at C?

TOML 09-02-2011 01:27 PM

Feaster is wheeling and dealing enough perhaps to give Iginla one legitimate last shot at the cup.

Now you just have to be convinced that supporting guys like Tanguay, Morrison, Stempniak and Hannan are the guys who'll do it.

The flames are looking for a #1 center? ya don't say..... so are 20-25 other teams

Don't think Ottawa wants to trade Spezza. As for Lecavalier, I don't know how fans in Tampa feel about him, I know he's been a franchise player for them so in my opinion, I think he stays in Tampa Bay.

Maybe Mikhail Grabovski?

The bruins? I could see Calgary wanting Krejci

The Kremelin Wall* 09-02-2011 01:30 PM

Sounds like they want GODmez.

Gomez + 3rd for 2nd + Morrison and Hagman.

Then the Habs can move AK46 for something.

We don't want to trade Grabovski either, we need centres so we'd want one back and Calgary has none. Bad trading partners.

good luck with that Toronto values him A LOT

They should have signed Connolly :sarcasm:

But in all seriousness...I tend to agree with this post.

#1 centers aren't just available. They are going to have to either overpay or get someone with a bad contract. It will probably be the latter.

coldsteelonice84 09-02-2011 01:33 PM

Yeah, Flames need to get in line and the fact is they can't compete asset wise with the other 10-15 teams looking for a center.

Tampa and ottawa wont trade there #1 centers.. The only appealing thing that calgary has to offer for a #1 center is iggy. And we all know that Calgary will not trade iginla for anything

R0bert0 Lu0ng0 09-02-2011 01:35 PM

The Flames have been "in the market for a #1 centre" for about a decade now.

Ville82 09-02-2011 01:35 PM

Hagman + Stajan for Grabovski?

There isn't a player (or any combination of players) in Calgary organization that I would trade Krejci for. Not trying to be a dbag, just being honest. Flames need to throw in the towel & rebuild already. They have to have the worst (or close to) prospect pool in the NHL.

OK, for SERIOUS guys...

Sens aren't trading Spezza. Why does his name come to mind any time a conversation turns towards trading for a top center? He's 27, likes living in Ottawa/ playing in the Eastern Conference, has a full NMC, and everyone from the GM to the current captain (Alfie) has already laid a succession plan out for him to become the next captain once Alfredsson retires. And after him, our best center is Peter FREAKING Regin.

C'mon guys. Spezza is clearly, CLEARLY not in play. Please find a new "go-to center" regarding trade talks... it gets tiring after a while.

I highly doubt that bruins move krejci after the playoffs he had. Didnt he lead the bruins in points in the playoffs? Like i said, iginla is really the only piece any team will be interested in

Every team would love Krejci. Hes a fantastic two-way center with even more upside.

Iginla would have to be involved, which doesnt make sense for Calgary.

I actually agree with you but I could see them asking
